Two Witches (2021)
Italian grindhouse horror done right
I had a blast with this one all the way to post-end credits scene. Loved the sincere but self-aware approach to the 70s/80 style. This will please fans of Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Mario Bava. The film has a unique structure where there are two connected stories, keeping us guessing how events will merge. The chilling performance of the character, Masha, our villain protagonist makes this worth rewatching alone! The cinematography is gorgeous. The cgi face changing effects put big budget movies to shame. And the piano/violin score and soundtrack truly elevate the vintage appeal of this modern giallo throwback. Looking forward to the sequel!
Daughter of Dismay (2019)
Daughter of Delight
I was invited to a special screening to the IMAX headquarters to see this beauty in its full 70mm glory. The minimalistic story treats the audience intelligently, with carefully crafted "show don't tell" filmmaking, intriguing and drawing in the viewer.
The juxtaposition of a small scale story on an immense canvas of an IMAX screen shows that there are no limits to how we can experience films. James Quinn is a fearless pioneer and I can't wait to see what he does next.
