Wake Wood (2009)
Disappointing
After reading other reviews and watching the trailer for this movie, I had high hopes. They've since been dashed - I think I expected too much.
The story could have been a great one but has flaws. I felt many of the characters were a bit week so I didn't get emotionally attached to any of them and didn't really care what happened to them.
Don't get me wrong, I've sat through much worse films in my time and Wake Wood isn't terrible. I'm disappointed that I'm not going to bed with the story playing on my mind.
I'm also not sure what involvement Hammer had in this film, if any other than a logo on the box of the DVD and on the menu page. They weren't even mentioned in the credits which also had a copyright year of 2009.
If you could only watch one new Hammer movie I'd say The Resident or Let Me in are both a lot more enjoyable.
Mark Macready and the Archangel Murders (2009)
Awesome comedy horror
I was lucky enough to be invited to a launch party for this short movie just after it was released online for free public viewing.
It is a short film but I'd say it's the perfect length for what it is. It's a tongue in cheek affair that reminds me of Evil Dead and Shaun of the Dead. I can imagine Bruce Campbell or Simon Pegg + Nick Frost loving this! Being set in Manchester was also a big attraction to me as it's near to where I live. I'm not saying that this would detract from the enjoyment for anyone else watching Mark Macready and the Archangel Murders but it was an added bonus for me.
I don't really want to give anything about the storyline as I think it needs to be watched (after all it's only around 30 minutes long).
If you like comedy / horror I'd say this is a must watch. The production is absolutely great and all the people involved in it's making have done a fantastic job on such a limited budget.
I'm looking forward to seeing bigger budget, longer movies from all of the guys and gals responsible for this in the near future.
