Good Family movie
10 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
From this movie I draw one conclusion more than anything. The conclusion is in bollywood once you are tagged with some role you have to keep doing it again and again. Anupam Kher is three years younger than Raj Babbar. But in this movie he has acted in the role of father of Raj Babbar. The obvious reason, In Bollywood one who is born old remains always old. Anupam Kher started his career on high note in movie Saaransh and his acting in this movie is comparable to the previous movie. This movie tells the story of a father who has to decide which of his sons (elder) should go for studies and which (younger) has to work instead of studies. He hopes that his elder son will bear the family's responsibilities later. But once the elder sons gets good job, he doesn't fulfill his father's expectations. It is very much the story of an Indian lower middle class family. Overall a good movie.

One of the best Hindi movie
28 January 2005
When I look at the past I really feel sorry for Indian cinema. A sensitive and poetic film of this class sank at the box office, leading to the death of its producer Shailendra due to financial crisis. This film is today recognized as one of the best movie by all critics and actors. Film is based on a story of the Phanishwer Nath Renu, one of renowned Hindi writers.

This film portrays story of Hiraman, a bullock cart driver and a dancer Hirabai. Hirabai is attracted to Hiraman due to his simplicity. She is going to a fair by Hiraman's bullock cart to perform in drama. The bond between two grows stronger as the day passes at fair. But finally as the fair comes closer to end, the parting seems imminent due to external factors. Finally when fair is over, Hirabai has to go and two separates.

To quote Star and Style's review of the film, "The way the cart driver and nautanki dancer meet, talk and discover each other and themselves at the same time and the manner in which they part are like a poem on celluloid with a thread of pain running through it." Raj Kapoor and Vaheeda Rehamn has given the best performances of their career. Songs are worth listening for hours. A must watch.

Good presentation of emotions
20 December 2004
It is not the case that we don't get love, but we don't get it from somewhere we expect. These lines belong to one of the songs of this movie and these lines are enough to tell the whole concept of this movie. It is a story of the daughter of a prostitute, who is in love with a boy. The boy belongs to a higher background. This love story goes well until the father of this girl appears. He wants the boy to get married to his legal daughter and makes this request to the girl. The girl finally sacrifices her love for the boy and the boy gets married to the half sister of this girl. Nice story and great presentation of emotions. Padmini Kolhapuri has acted nicely as the girl. You can keep on listening the music for hours. Alteast watch once.

Eye Opener of Rural India
9 June 2004
Warning: Spoilers
One of the best movies ever made on the rural background of India. High point of the movie was when Om Puri kills his own sister in order to save her from the hands of so called high class people. It really shows the frustration that a rural youth keeps on accumulating with the society. The youth, Om Puri, is arrested on charges of murdering his wife, the crime he has not committed and know the culprits. He is provided with a lawyer but he still refuses to disclose the names of culprits and events which led to his wife's death. It shows the lack of faith he has in the law of the land. Om Puri hasn't spoken a single line in this movie. but still his eyes tells it all and I have to say that I haven't seen such an expressive acting in my whole life without a single sentence being delivered by an actor. Hats off to Om Puri. Other actors have done justice to their characters. Particularly Naseeruddin shah and Amrish Puri are great. A Must watch for the masses. I give 10 out of 10 to this movie.

Ground realities of rural India
21 April 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Its one of the eye opener movies that shows the ground realities in most of the rural india. It shows the caste system and differences between poor and rich. Most of the peasants in rural region are poor and in order to fullfill their requirements they need to lend money from the money lender. These money lenders take their farm land as guarantee and after some time they capture these lands. Dharemendra, a low caste person, represents the feeling of the young generation whose ansector land has been taken away from them unjustly. He is a teacher who transfroms into a bandit for causes of the mass. In the last he is hit by several bullets but still is able to burn all the documents of money lenders using which they captured the land of masses. Songs of this movie is written by Gulzar and is worth of listening for hours. All the actors have done justice to their character. This movie is worth watching,
