Love to Love You, Donna Summer (2023)
A surprisingly boring mess.
I can't believe some of the other reviews of this.
It is a disjointed and revisionist farce that should have been way better.
The use the clip of her denying saying anything against gay people in it.
Yet have spoken multiple times about it as 'fact' ?
"I was so impacted and hurt by the 'Adam and Steve' comment. So I wanted to explore that in this film and know why."
Like the recent Rick James doc,
they imply A Lot.
"I put my hands on a woman."
And,
having covered 'that subject',
they move on.
At a machine-gun rate too.
At one point,
marriage infidelity is mentioned.
Sexual abuse is chucked in just after that.
And on it goes.
Never fully explaining anything.
Her daughter has said in the press that she 'took naps' while the other guy actually edited this picture.
It shows.
They do use music from her first band The Crow in it.
I think.
Of course, there's voices gabbing over that bit.
I guess Bruce Sudano did contact Paul Gambaccini after all.
He asked me once 'how' to contact him.
One of Mr. PG's radio docs - they spoke to the guy who remembers recording Donna - back then.
Her Estate currently thinks endless reissues of the same tracks.
With God awful 'new mixes' is the way forward.
This movie is more of the same.
"This'll do."
Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon (1998)
A struggle.
"Is that what you call it these days, dear ?"
Was he really really just a portlier John Inman with a OW,
NO HARDER !
Fetish
Who the site of an angelic bit of semi-ruff
Daniel - James Bond Craig - no less.
Suddenly means he can't refuses his urges no more !
I think ?
Kinda like the gay sex scene keanu reeves did in a movie
in some parts too
two guys rolling about nekkid all arty fart lit
should be a turn on ?
Not really in this.
Tilda Swinton - err I didn't really 'know' she WAS in it 'til I checked the credits
she gives Patsy Stone a run for Stolly
and is mighty convincing in her few fag hag slag scenes.
She's in the credits
so it must be her
if so she out acted everyone else in a bit part
there's something not very Derek Jarman about the whole thing
could have been a lot better.
Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (2021)
Can you decide what kind of movie you are ?
Needlessly confusing.
Is the two word review.
There's this great gig going on.
AND
People keep talking over it.
It'd work better as two separate things.
Why,
btw,
did Sly Stone's presence there have to be described as him being a 'Proto-Prince' ?
That,
and a few other things are unnecessary.
YES,
Sly Stone's drummer and brass man were white...
After the first notes,
no one cared.
Gladys Knight almost looks like she's gonna burst into a bit of Oirish Dancing from the look of her frock is another image I got.
It cram, cram, crams far too much into it's time onscreen.
I know this was history and everything but I will watch part two.
The bit with all the talking after the show.
There's an idea/option for the DVD.
The Smallest Show on Earth (1957)
"SEAT'S AT ALL PRICES !"
Take one look at the cast list.
I first saw this aeons ago as a kid one afternoon on TV.
'thoy-sand poy-nd's'
It's all frightfully frightfully but that also part of it's charm.
There's lot's of other better thought of 'movies about movies.
This is a film I've never tired off.
It's pretty much perfect.
There's no nudity, swearing or CGI either.
It's just a great story well acted.

Yes...twice.
I've seen this movie a little more than that though.........
The Velvet Underground (2021)
Great Subject = Slow and Dull Documentary
IF you know nothing about them you will LOve this.
I'm no expert but I kept picking up the remote and seeing how much longer this was on.
Like Treacle,
as my Mother used to say.
It's not for the easily bored.
Though if you are A Fan.
(I once bought a UK magazine 'coz it claimed to have an exclusive feature about 'The Velvet underground' it said on the cover.)
It all seemed VERY familiar.
When you got to the end of it all.
It said in sideways (!) writing that all the text was from a recent 5 CD box set.
OH !
The one I'd just bought......
This film is the same.
Buy the albums first.
You might have some issues with the BLOODY SOUND on this film.
Up & Down it went.
And not in a good way.
Hobson's Choice (1954)
" 'appen they don't make 'em like this any more."
A must see.
5 minutes in I checked who directed.
Only David BL**DY Lean like !
In two clicks you can see his directing CV.
A slightly more complex tale of good beating evil in a filthy looking Victorian Manchester.
Our American chums will 'see' Daphne everywhere in this film.
That's no accident.
"Maggie's not the sort you get familiar with...".
It might look a leetel beet olde worlde to some over critical viewers but that adds buckets for me.
Have you ever seen the Mel Gibson movie Tim ?
No ?
That's 'coz the 'star' is Piper "whiskey on his breathe" Laurie.
I found the book 2nd hand not long after seeing it on a wet afternoon's TV.
The strangest part for me watching this movie recently is that it seemed to be My Dad playing
the Charles Laughton 'part'.
Everyone is perfect in it and Prunella Scales talking to her Father might remind you of Someone ?
A 9+
Bitchin': The Sound and Fury of Rick James (2021)
"That was just Rick."
Glad I watched this up until the end.
The first half is the uphill = isn't he wonderful part.
The big accusations come about three-quarters in.
The Stone City Band playing 'live' with a Rick James look-a-likey was were it all came falling down.
IF they could have edited that out...
Up until then it was a somewhat enjoyable story.
Told me nothing new.
A lot of CV flashing towards the end too.
It does talk about his music a lot.
Which is a nice change.
Teena Marie got her diary back after his death.
He 'wrote' Deja Vu.
It says so on her record
She'd forgot that she wrote it.
"That was just Rick."
Demolition (2015)
He showers - A LOT !
As lovely an idea,
as watching Jake Gyllenhaal half-naked in the shower,
for almost a good half-hour might sound...
It makes for a 'meh' of a movie.
Everyone says their lines and goes through the motions of making a film.
Something a bit more than the main actor,
it's deffo his movie,
looking glum and smahing things up.
Would have been worth the effort.
Nothing really happens.
There are a few events but they are only there to keep you awake.
"Oh Right...", moments.
There is a plot in here somewhere.
IF you LOve any of the actors in this go watch.
To me it was like paint drying.
Joe (1970)
"Colder than a witches tit."
Did people really cheer at Peter Boyle's character in this movie ?
I bet they did.
He is totally beliveable and almost everyone else is too.
50+ years old and it doesn't creak at all.
It might show it's age with cars & a few little things.
But it could be remade tomorrow.
The title above was I realised I had seen it before but like decades ago.
And that was the only line I really remembered.
He doesn't 'act',
he is just SO believable.
What makes it more chilling and scary is the knowledge there is even more people in real life just like him.
And with the internet now.
Basically,
Why haven't you seen it yet ?
Moonfall (2022)
"This doesn't make any sense Brian !"
"There's gotta be another way !"
I was taking notes.
'One More Time', is the song that ends this.
Yeah, another brain dead stupid science movie.
'Fantastic Voyage' was fun though.
This is painful.
"A whole other level of insane !", someone says at one point.
Someone, 'ox you don't ever care for anyone in it.
Actors reading bad lines ,doing just enough and keeping a straight face.
The CGI will fix everything.
Again.
It also rips-off a whole lot of ideas but a hole is where they should have left the whole boring moving.
The best special effect was how they got Daphne from Frasier into a fat-suit.
And how she kept up with the guys' voice.
Or was that dubbed in ?
Saddest thing is he will probably make A. Nother piece of crap like this.
I accidentally downloaded another film called 'Moon Crash'.
Same sorta thing.
A lot less CGI and A LOT more gormless yakking.
Why do these things get made ?
The Eagle (2011)
IF you LOve the two main actors = it helps.
Looks very interesting to start with but it plods along and the end is a sequel set-up.
Anyone giving this more that five,
is in the group marked by this' title.
Donald Sutherland and Mark Strong turn up to do some heavy lifting.
Oh yeah !
It is all serious and bromance-ified.
With not a whiff of any Derek Jarman's going on anywhere in this movie.
There's blue Scottish people too.
A bit of a microwave burger of a film.
Cold Dog Soup (1990)
A B Picture
"SAY 'WHAT' ONE MORE TIME !"
I laughed.
A Lot.
B stature is no put down.
There's just something about the main guy though.
Was he ever Norman Bates ?
In the right movie he could be knockout.
Maybe it's just the editing.
The girl init = could be in one of Prince's girl groups in a re-remake = no ??
Gringo (2018)
Daniel Oyelowo has a really bad time of it.
A caper movie and meant to be fun.
David Oyelowo squawks A Lot in it but it's funny 'coz that what you would do with guns waved in your face.
The trailers don't really sell it.
Just go watch and stop picking fault with the title.
"They slowest mouse in all Meh-hee-ko !"
Get a life.
Breathless (1983)
Norrin Radd gave up the LOve of his life to save the planet - A Must See
Apparently it's a remake ?
The news that Quentin Tarantino is a fan of this is no surprise if you have watched it.
Thing is, a lot of critics obviously haven't.
It's all done in a sorta surreal kinda way.
The two main stars look beautiful naked which is handy as they are quite often in this film.
Their is also a story too which actually is kinda good.
But it's the style and the look of it that made me finally LOve this movie.....too.
I can't remember if The Silver Surfer gets his name in the credits but he should have.
I'm no mad Richard Gere fan but this movie isn't what you might think.
Der Himmel über Berlin (1987)
It is even better on a BIG Screen but it's a must see film.
U know how in Hollywood movies people sometimes keep their feelings hidden ?
🤔
In some German films they explain EVERY Thing they are feeling in great, great detail.
Nick Cave, Peter Falk AND sexy guy Angels...what more could you want ?
Dark Encounter (2019)
If you haven't seen many movies you will love this.
Lots of dull Americans do lots of dull stuff.
They bicker and drive about in cars.
A kid has went missing.
Nothing make any sense.
The big twist is drowned by 'atmospheric' music.
Like a film school graduate has been given a lot of money.
The epilogue talk-over bit is on now.
Some bits look nice but that's watching it with the sound off.
BAD.
