Starukhi (2003)
Highly original portrait of Russian peasant women
7 February 2005 - 5 out of 5 users found this review helpful.
This film is a wonderfully original portrayal of a group of poor Russian peasant women, who are all that's left of their village; the occasional visits of soldiers from an army division based nearby to buy "samogon" (moonshine) vodka; and the impact of the arrival of a group of Muslim Uzbeks to live in one of the unoccupied houses.
Incredibly true to life and believable. However, my Russian was stretched to its limits with the extremely colourful folk idioms of the characters' speech, and I learnt quite a few new expressions, expanding my vocabulary in otherwise "uncharted" areas. A thoroughly human film and a refreshing change from the mainstream.
