Appaloosa (2008)
Very Good
I really enjoyed Appaloosa but not as much as I had hoped. These days it is hard to find a good western or any western being made for that matter. Open Range was the last western to come out that I really enjoyed. The trailers for Appaloosa had me excited that Ed Harris was making a western and re-teaming with Viggo Mortensen after A History of Violence. I felt the writing in this movie was very witty and often times laugh out loud funny. All the actors did respectable jobs and it was nice to see Lance Henriksen in a mainstream movie and not some made for t.v. sci-fi original! The plot was about average but could have used more time for some back story and character development. Most of the story of the movie was just told as this is what it is and no reasons as to why? Jeremy Irons who was extremely underused in my opinion was the bad guy because the movie said so and he kills some people in the beginning.I don't like movies that are long just to be long or to try and set themselves away from the pack but I love long movies if the time is used to enhance the plot and characters. I don't believe it was more than a walkthrough for most of the actors involved which is a shame because they have all done such great work in other films. I don't care much for Renee Zellweger (sp?) and would really have liked to seen another actress in her place. Overall it was an enjoyable movie and if you like westerns catch this one at a matinée or if you are lucky enough to have a dollar theater in your town as I do that would be ideal.
Doom (2005)
Best Video Game Movie to Date
I just watched Doom a few hours ago and I must say that I enjoyed it more than I expected to. I am not a huge fan of the game but have played each of them and the makers of this film did a decent job in the adaptation. My biggest complaint about the film was the lack of creatures. It was almost more of a zombie movie than it was a creature movie. Also the fact that the creatures/zombies were biologically created instead of coming from hell was disappointing. Besides the Rock and Karl Urban for a cast of relative unknowns they did as good a job as one could expect in this type of film. In my opinion the Rock stole the show as he has a tendency to do with his magnetic personality. I don't want to give anything away but this is not the same Rock you have seen in his other movies! Overall Doom was a good action/sci-fi movie that you can just enjoy for an hour and a half.
The Fog (2005)
By the end of the movie I wish the fog had taken me!
First off I have not seen the original so I can not compare the two. This movie was very predictable and slow moving. I believe the running time is around an hour and 40 minutes but it felt like I was there for over two hours. The film had no genuine scares just your run of the mill loud noises and poor attempts at suspense. Now I am all for suspending reality for the sake of a good movie but some of the scenes in this movie were far beyond that. The cast was about as unimpressive as the film itself. This movie is not entertaining in the least. I can only hope that the original is better than this. Maybe I should give it a shot at redemption from the complete waste that the remake is. Its too bad this movie did not fall victim to the fog.
Friday After Next (2002)
Waste of Time
This movie was not good at all. I liked the first two movies but I can not say the same for the last one. I think Cube and Epps are a great team on film but this movie was so bad I don't think anything could have saved it. The movie was pointless! I laughed two or three times at the most and most of what I did laugh at I had seen in the trailers. The best part was when Epps character was yelling at the old women in front of the liquor store. Cube is not funny at all and the movie was the same as the other two. It was about Craig and Day-Day trying to get money they owed before an overly large man beat them up. Even Craigs' dad who I think is the funniest character was not funny at all. I know people who liked the first two movies will see this regardless, but if you are just going to see it because you think it looks funny don't.
Eight Crazy Nights (2002)
Funny Stuff
This movie provided me with a great number of laughs. It was a nice change from all the other movies that have been populating the theaters as of late. For all those who are bashing this movie for its crude humor I would like to say so what! The movie is rated pg-13 after all. It is not rated G and it certainly does not have the world Disney precluding it thank God. I am in my mid twenties and I was more than able to not take the movie serious at all and just have a good time. Sandler is funny no matter what he does. If you did not think it was funny fine, but if you did not like it because the story was too predictable of the bathroom humor was too much then lighten up. It is a MOVIE and a cartoon one at that. How serious do you think those who made the film intended it to be. If you like Sandler and you can not take the movie or yourself to seriously then check this movie out for a few good laughs.
8 Mile (2002)
A Good Movie!
I saw 8 Mile opening day and my assumptions that it would be a good movie came full circle. Eminem did a good job for his first movie. I do not know why some people are saying Oscar because it was in no way anything close to an Oscar performance and I am glad that Eminem is not buying into all the hype that has surrounded the movie. Also much respect to Eminem for stepping out and doing a movie without a pre established action star. I though Mekhi was great and Cheddar Bob provided good comic relief while at the same time portraying a genuine friend to Eminem's character. I really enjoyed the movie and I will most likely see it at least one more time on the big screen and I wil definately own the DVD when it comes out. My overall rating is 7.5 out of 10 stars.
