A Bridge Too Far (1977)
under-rated masterpiece ... would that have anything to do with the defeat ???
After seeing this movie I was pretty sure to find it in the imdb top 250.
When I saw the score it had I began thinking about why the movie could be so under-rated. The acting is marvelous, the cast is magnificent, the decors are authentic,... So far no bad points... but.... when you look at the storyline;
It is about the fact that the allied forces thought they were invincible and tried to pull one hell of a stunt. Bad for them, .... they lost the battle, and had lots of casualties. And that is the only reason I can find why "a bridge too far" scores so low. I think people don't like movies about lost battles. In other words, you have to see this movie, it's definitely under-rated.
12 Angry Men (1957)
First listen, then watch
12 Angry Men was the highest ranked films in the imdb "Top 250 Movies of All-Time" that I had never heard from. That was my main reason for renting it.
Before I go on I must admit that I like black and white movies much, and if you don't then reconsider watching this movie, 'cause there isn't much action to divert you from the fact that it is in b/w.
This is one of the few movies witch I'd say you d have to see before you may saying that old movies aren't as good as the new ones.
The movie is about one man who stands up to eleven other men and tries to turn them over to his side one by one. He does this by questing facts and using sentimental reasons. The film gives a clear view of how it can go and how it should go in murder cases.
Except for the first few moments, the film is played almost entirely in one room witch is actually too small for twelve men. You see the evolution in people and the way they think and act.
The cast is very small ant that makes it possible to identify yourself with every one of the jury members.
The Second World War in Colour (1999)
Its was real, but now it also looks real and in color
When I started the first episode I thought to myself, "yet another World-war 2 documentary". I was wrong; the facts are the same as in all the other documentaries (naturally) but the fact that the images shown are in color actually does the trick. I never thought that whether a movie is in black/white of in color would change that much but this case proved me wrong. Also, the documentary covers almost the entire war in no more than 180 minutes witch I thought was done pretty well
After seeing this I say ==> bye bye black and white , hello color
Bowling for Columbine (2002)
God, this is good, but is this cinema material ?
As a non-American I watched this "movie" with great amusement and astonishment. I couldn't believe what I saw. Suddenly I understood how it was possible that such dramas happened. I meant that when you get a rifle by opening a bank account, there is something wrong with your society.
This is a really good portrait of American society and the way they take guns for toys. But I can't help but wonder if this really was cinema material, I think there would be a much bigger audience for it if it was broadcasted on television.
Awakenings (1990)
Déja Vue
When I saw this movie I had the terrible feeling of a déja vue. It's not that this movie whas bad or anything like that, far from it. But the acting done by Robert De Nero was just a copie of the work done by Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man and the part of Robin williams as the doctor who never gives up hope was just a replay of his part in Good Will Hunting. Except for those (little) drawbacks it is overal a good movie. You really get carried away by this touching story.
The Great Waldo Pepper (1975)
Good movie if you're interested in planes
I rented the dvd of the movie 'cause I saw the dvd at my local library and my full nickname is waldo frinkazoid. The cover looks pretty good and the name Robert Redford 'rang a bell'. I guess that those reasons were not good enough, To like this movie i think you have to bee an aviation freak. The story is not the main thing in this movie, one should be impressed but the stunts performed in the movie, the story comes in second place. The title makes you believe it's a tribute to Waldo Pepper but I can't say I like what he did much.
