Last Looks (2021)
80 years too late
I honestly didn't think they made such flat steteotypical movies anymore.
The film noir genre was popular in the 1940's. A beautiful mysterious woman lures the private investigator hero into a dangerous situation. He is badly beaten several times, yet remains without injuries and it's all a laugh in the end.
This has been done thousands of times before and the craft of film making, including script have long ago surpassed such mediocre efforts.
Yes, the streaming explosion has created a market for anything that is just content, but it has been a long time since I saw something this boring. Maybe it's because I was tired after a long week and would have looked for something else if I had had the energy.
The King of Staten Island (2020)
Something as rare as a funny comedy
It's rare to come across a comedy that doesn't just recycle the same old tired 1950's jokes (sexism, body shaming, toxic masculinity, in other words- kicking downwards). The King of Staten Island has a lot of original, funny scenes and jokes that originate in reality and serious matters, taking them to an absurd level, but still keeping it believable enough that you actually know people that would almost act like this (except not being nearly as witty). Even the women (except the sister) are allowed to be funny. Excellent acting all around.
Examples of what I think is funny: Get Him To the Greek, Silicon Valley, The Heat, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Greener Grass, Nanette.
Examples of what I don't think is funny: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, everything with Adam Sandler (and the whole slew of movies/series like that).
It kind of reminds me of Oscar Wilde's plays, where all characters are witty in the same way. Very entertaining and lots of laughs and giggles throughout the film.
Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann (2013)
Some funny moments, but cold hearted
I agree with rasmushistoriker's review that the tone is wrong. As a middle aged Swede, I am used to that kind of cynical humor, but my 12-year old had a shocked reaction to the way the main (supposedly likable) characters showed no remorse or sadness when they killed a number of people. And that it was presented as normal, not as a character flaw. (from a kid who plays some violent video games, likes Kickass and thinks cartoon type violence is fun) This is a violent film with horrible tragedies treated flippantly. Some funny scenes, but no heart. There are a lot better ways to spend 90 minutes, (I would suggest Four Lions, Win Win and In A World if you want comedies with a heart).
Vi är bäst! (2013)
Excellent feel good movie
Just saw this with my 11-year old (+ friend) and parents. We all enjoyed the film immensely. Lots of laughing out loud from everybody and squirming at embarrassing situations for the kids. High quality work in all areas of cast and crew. Very good description of the joy and energy of youth that are just beginning to form strong friendships, stand up for themselves (and each other) and explore their creativity and define themselves interacting with the world. Such a relief from most films about/for youth that are stuck in surface aesthetics, cardboard characters and and routine sexism. We will see this one again, more than twice.
