The Creator (2023)
Proper production, very weak story, propaganda in abundance
Taking reference from many prior films like Alien, this movie tries to look tough but does not succeed. The team characters are without any depth. No emotions are invoked with the viewer. Everybody who shares their life story had relatives killed due war. But it is not one, but many victims. As if one isn't enough and the pain is equivalent to the number. OK, i have written enough letters to state my only intended message:
The secret weapon lab was hidden under civilian village. With corridors dug under sacred temple spot. Does it bring any bell? Any similarities with things happening as i write this review?
Snowfall: The Struggle (2023)
Devastating
Oh my, i will need a week or two to come over this ending. Don't get me wrong, it was well made and in accordance with previous writing but so dark. Indeed a proper criminal story, this younger breaking bad version should have a moral. Or should it? It was obvious in last episodes that main characters will face downward spiral of a sort. His actions considered, a deserved one. But still one has hopes for him. For some kind of insight, revelation, change. He is so smart and through early seasons he tries to do right in chaotic and vicious world, he does not hurt innocent and has visions of future that transcend criminal everyday. But last season huh, lays heavy on the viewer. Awesome, quality series till the bitter end.
Adopt a Highway (2019)
Sweet, slow emotional movie
Basically about father and son but this isn't apparent from start. Made me cry a bit. It is slowly revolving, building the character of a lost soul, good hearted ex convict Russ. He is trying to find something to hold, to anchor his life to. It is also movie about injustice of the system and life. Probably not for everyone to watch but if you know feeling of being lost and lonesome, feeling of being disconnected from parents, work and hyper motivated world then...
In the Heart of the Sea (2015)
Casting done so wrong. The target audience is?
Casting done so wrong. This might have been a good movie overall. Visuals work, story is bulletproof but three major roles are totally miscast: leading Chase, captain and the youngest boy. The leading role went to the fitness instructor showing zero credibility (face scar doesn't make it) as sea wolf experienced weather forged personality. See past Ahabs like Gregory Peck and Patrick Stewart for reference. You'll say, but this movie is less a fantasy and more real. But if real is lame why bother? And Moby Dick is all about fantasy, greatness, fear, dominance and power of nature. I give something to Chris Hemsworth though, his voice did put me in order to salute. Quite minor Cillian Murphy role gives an insight of the proper casting. And yes, Peaky Blinders fans will be happy to see brothers in action again.
I've been thinking is this movie for children? Surely not you will agree on the quasi most disturbing part. But why being soft then on the boy entering whale interior part? That could be cool (well it was), but came out as censored. This was mistake, the ambiguous stance regarding MPAA. Either go all way or make this move for children. But how if the whole premise, tension is that little disturbing secret. I expected and wanted much more of the movie. I gave it 5.51 out of 10.
Black Mass (2015)
Rise to power flick with strong cast but empty characters, weak dialog, no suspense
Yes, Johnny Depp steals show, but the show is so very lame. Bunch of mafia clichés, hollow characters, no genre expected suspense. The movie wants to build idea of mafia friendship, followed by betrayals (this is shown on start already). But relationships among main characters aren't well defined, there are no connecting stories to make bonds believable. I like most actors so i was not prejudiced. I read somewhere Joel Edgerton was good in Black mass. Perhpas that is true, but John Connoly's dialogs were so childish, his actions that should be sneaky, scheming and cunning were simply transparent and unbelievable. No, i did not buy the story for a minute. Which is strange since the story is true. The good part, which isolated could be given high scores: Jimmy Whitey Bulger Johnny Depp looks scary indeed. The empty bright eyes could fit the horror flick. Strong occasional resemblance with Christopher Walken made me think Johnny studied him for this part. He did good job, but director could benefit from mafia classic recipe with Joe Pesci being the funny little guy made scary as hell by the story.
The Lone Ranger (2013)
Armie Hammer starring Thomas Jane
So is this comedy? Why no one warned me this is comedy. I am no mood for comedy. Nevertheless Johnny Depp was quite good. Age and beer belly kind of made him serious and strange enough to play in western. You can also find William Fichtner as bad guy. But he won't scare you. Perhaps with no make up he is indeed scary in the movie he was kind of lame. Appearing and disappearing constantly you get used to him and despite he is supposedly a cannibal he does not deliver. Michael Wiscott comes into my mind instead.
And what was that double train chase? Did they really had side by side railways going on each side of a canyon? Perhaps so, but in the movie it seemed far-fetched. As some action stunts.
Is director Tim Burton fan? I love Helena Bonham Carter. Movie is watchable, it is funny sometimes and Mr. Depp gets into your heart. Armie Hammer, who is that guy again?
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
The whole isn't greater than the sum of its parts (spoiler)
This movie is mixture of Friday 13th, Hellraiser and of course Truman Show. There is a bit of The Osterman Weekend (camper chase scene). Anyway the parts sadly do not make great whole. I enjoyed movie scene by scene not necessarily connected. For instance i like movie as THC promotion. Character that smokes pot knows better :). There are some seriously sexy scenes with Anna Hutchison. If separated i'd rate some parts 8 or 9.
But mood isn't established, viewer is driven from one point to another to another too fast. Suspension fails. Monsters are popping out, there is no place to hide not for a second to think over the situation. Being in the house in the basement or later underground there is plenty of chance for claustrophobia, but none. Director should watch Alien before making this movie.
You get used to characters not being really dead. I don't mean zombies but folks you considered done they come back as there was nothing wrong. Not very realistic right? No loss of blood or internal injuries.
All in all i give 6 out of 10.
Mommie Dearest (1981)
The HORROR it is.
One of the best women acting i have ever seen. I was chilled to my bones. Jesus how well madness is portrayed here by Faye Dunaway. I was thinking even to quit smoking ;).
Anyway it's a biography of Joan Crawford the famous actress who - due to her ambition - losses sanity step by step. Seen through her adopted child Christina eyes. We can see how quickly those children had to grow up seeing their mommy breaking apart. We can also understand better to families in agony. This movie was made after a book Christina wrote. Christina being played by underdog actress Diana Scarwid.
In my opinion it goes side by side with The Shining or Psycho. I will surely try to see more Faye Dunaway movies in near future.
