Memento (2000)
Think I've found a mistake!
MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!
SPOILER ALERT!!!
Ok, I need somebody who has watched this movie more than once to validate this but I think I've found a mistake. And if I'm right, it's HUGE!
The last scene (or rather the first scene) of the film involves Leonard writing on Teddy's photo to "Kill him, he's the one". During the film however, these words do not appear on the photo, only the words "Don't believe his lies".
Now if the end of the movie is actually the beginning, and the previous scenes actually happen AFTER the last scene, why don't the words appear on the photo in the rest of the film? The only possible answer is that the last scene happens directly before the first scene and as far as I'm aware, that's not the way it works.
Blurred (2002)
So true!
Blurred is a great movie for people who have done the schoolies thing in the past 5 years. I really doubt that others would find it entertaining.
Being someone who did schoolies 3 years ago, it brought back some great memories. The writers were spot on with the end-of-school trip.
Favourite scene - on the train when the boyfriend tells the girlfriend he wants to break up for the week so he can do what schoolies is all about: casual sex. Loved it - SO TRUE!!!
Best Aussie movie I've seen in a while.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
I'm sorry to say it, but I just don't get the Coen brothers films
I've tried and I've tried. After reading IMDB reviews I'm sure I'm about the only person alive who just, well . . . doesn't get it. Raising Arizona was ok but The Big Lebowski and O Brother were almost painful to watch. And I've searched for Fargo in every video store and am yet to find it. If it's such a classic, why don't the video stores carry it?
O Brother took all my patience and concentration just to understand the accents. Maybe that's part to blame on me being Australian and not getting southern American accents. The storyline seemed to change every few moments, I didn't give a rats arse about the characters and where were the jokes? - I picked this up in the comedy section!
The pace of O Brother was incredibly slow, excrutiatingly slow and soooo long! I walked out for half hour, came back and felt like I didn't miss anything.
Unless you're a fan of the Coen brothers, I'd stay away from this film. Unless you enjoy mind-numbing "entertainment".
Frequency (2000)
I'm so glad everybody agrees with me!!
This movie is fantastic! And I think the comments here prove that.
Disregard the comments of people who say it has inconsistencies or it's unbelievable.
Unbelievable?? Of course it is. I'm sure I'm not the only person who thinks time travel is impossible.
Inconsistent?? Seeing that nobody knows what happens when time is distorted, how can you say that there are inconsistencies with the premise of time travel?
I've seen this movie three times (first time at the drive-in on a rainy night - perfect!!) and each time I pick up on things that I didn't notice the time before.
Definitely worth seeing if you want a movie that encourages you to think and plays on your sense of adventure.
Shallow Hal (2001)
Everybody has missed the point
I was out to dinner with a friend the other day. He kept making comments about an overweight couple at a table nearby and I said to him, "Didn't you learn anything from Shallow Hal?".
The movie was great but I must say that I'm sick of fat people being told that it's ok to be fat.
Seriously, eveybody's thinking it but no one's game to say it so I will.
Why are magazines these days spouting off about Size 14-16 women being "Real women"? I'm a real woman and I'm a size 10! I exercise, I eat right and I look after myself. I should be the one getting rewarded and in this day when obesity is one of the largest health problems in Australia (following America's footsteps), movies like Shallow Hal are telling people that it's ok to be fat as long as you're nice. That's bull!
I definitely agree with inner beauty being more important that outer beauty, but what's so wrong with looking after yourself and taking an effort to LOOK good as well as BE good?
What a load of crap that the physical beauties are all ugly underneath. I happen to know some very attractive women whose personalities I envy more than their looks!
Lolita (1997)
Was I the only one who found this movie extremely disturbing?
In none of the above reviews have I read a comment by a person who is outraged by the paedophilic relationship in this movie. Even though I enjoyed the film, and found it interesting, I couldn't quite believe how sexually disturbed it was. Thank God they didn't take the sex scenes between Humbert and Lolita any further, because I think it would have made me sick.
Jeremy Irons is wonderful; I have always thought so. He has this ability to convey his emotions through his voice (which incidently is a very sexy voice) without showing it on his face or by his actions. And I think Dominique Swain does a great job as Lolita.
The part that I have a problem with is the sexual awareness of such a young girl. When she says jokingly to Humbert, "You've just ruined a daisy fresh girl" (or something along those lines) is she repeating something she has heard from an adult or is she, on some level, letting him know that she has the power in the relationship? If the latter, where did she get the idea that sex is a tool that women use to disempower men? She shows infinite maturity at times but most of the time is a childish brat.
I didn't sympathise with Humbert at all. I didn't care for his lost love and I couldn't see what he fell in love with in Lolita. And when she called him, "Dad", uugh!
The film was entertaining, But would I let my daughter play "Lolita" if she was offered the part? - No way in hell.
