The D'Amelio Show (2021)
Tears for them poor poor multi-millionaires
Don't you just hate it when talentless multi-millionaires, who made their money in the most lazy ways, are sad? I do. And watching this show was heartbreaking to me.
If you feel like watching self-absorbed spoiled teens and their enabling parents self-pitying in the most cringey ways, after famously acting in the most disgusting ways in real life, to the point of putting people in danger in foreign island because they felt like taking a vacation in a tropical location in the middle of a pandemic, this show is for you.
I always thought that no form of entertainment could be worse than what Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian had brought us in the past two decades. I was so very wrong. So, so very wrong.
He's All That (2021)
A shameless mockery of a classic teen rom-com
Everything for the eyes of a pretty rich girl. This is pretty much what I think when I saw this movie. There is so many talented artists out there, but for the remake of She's All That, executives has chosen privilege over artistic awareness. And by casting Ms. Addison Rae as their lead, they have sent a message: "If you a rich and pretty, you will be given priority over other poorer artists." This isn't new but this is also very sad. And that kind of choices have consequences.
Here, we are talking about a dull remake with very questionable acting skills from the main actress. The thing with bad acting is this. Watching an actor embracing a character should give to the viewers an immersive experience: We forget that we are watching a character and we start to believe that we are watching real life people being filmed. When a bad actor tries himself in the production a movie, that immersive experience is ruined and instead, we realize that we are watching an actor painfully reading his/her lines. And this is exactly what one will experience by watching Ms. Rae on He's All That. You are not watching a character, you are watching someone 'trying' to be an actor in an average budget movie. And I hate to say that about a (wannabe/would be)actress, but the all thing smell 'fraud'.
The silver lining is that the other professional actors did very well (and the difference is noticeable in every scenes) except from a cameo from a famous reality show contestant, that I won't spoil for you here if you are still interested in watching the movie. And it's always a pleasure to see Rachael Leigh Cook on screen, even though she looks way to young to be playing this lady's mother.
The story is very typical and you couldn't do more cliché. But usually, with that type of predictable movie, there is always an element of charm to them. You know how it will end, but you appreciate the ride. We sadly do not get that here, apart from a few moments with Tanner Buchanan and especially Isabella Crovetti (the best actor here). The all thing seems a bit un-naturally manufactured, as if an AI had generated a movie by mixing and using all the elements that have been done in every teen rom-coms before it. The movie is also too fancy and clean whereas the original was a bit gritty in a few aspects. The humor also fall flat.
I would have loved a good gender swap remake of She's All That as the concept wasn't a bad idea in itself. But I just wish Hollywood would drop the habit of privileging non-talented people to please the rich and beautiful who suddenly feel like they are actors, because they have money in their bank accounts (and because they said so), instead of choosing quality and talent. How many times have we seen privileged people steal the place of poorer better talents? A habit that I wish we would leave behind in 2021. I don't know much about her talents as a dancer though, and maybe she's very good at that, but Addison Rae simply isn't an actress.
I am putting a 2/10 for Isabella Crovetti, but there is not much else here.
Don't Breathe 2 (2021)
A cool action movie
Don't breathe 2 can be considered controversial, considering that the main character was quite evil in the first movie, but if one go with an open mind, it is a fun action movie.
Maybe the beginning of a new franchise.
Till Death (2021)
Megan's acting needs improvements
I hate to be that guy and disparage an actor, but I'm sorry, Megan's acting seems to have gotten worse. She was pretty decent in Jennifer's Body. But she is just not as good in her last movies. And this one is no exception. She only has one facial expression for every situation. Sad, happy, scared, etc...
I can't really blame the direction on that one, because the other actors were very good. Especially the two bad guys. So I hope she gets better in her next movies. Or at least as good as she used to be in her first movies.
The movie in itself was actually ok. It was a decent thrillers with good ideas and well choreographed action scenes. A bit cliché but it's not an issue to me.
However her acting really ruined what could have been a better experience. And it just goes to tell you how important good actors are. Without that I would have probably rated it 6/10.
Homewrecker (2019)
A terrible use of a hood Alex Essoe
I watched Homewrecker because I'm a fan of Alex Essoe since Starry Eyes. But oh my, this movie is bad. The direction is absolutely absent. No style, no substance. The acting direction is a mess, and I can't even blame the actors for that. Terrible fight scene choreography in addition to a sloppy editing. The subject matter could have been interesting, but it is terribly exploited here. Fortunately, it was a pretty short one.
Watch it because Essoe is on it, but that's pretty much the only good thing about this movie.
The Girlfriend Experience (2016)
What even is Season 3?
I do not understand what happened this season. It's simple. There is absolutely no plot. It's just robotic people talking like aliens. Tech people sitting around, and talking about nonsensical techno-meta stuff. I don't understand a thing that is going on. And it's just dull and boring. Does anyone read that script before shooting? How was this season approved?
Pointless season. Go back to the writing of season 1 if the show is renewed or no need to come back at all.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)
So all that hype... for that?
This is just a bland rom-com. Not an ounce of originality. I was expecting much more considering all the hype, good reviews and Jenna Parrish.
In the same vein, watch The Duff instead. Even if it check all the boxes in terms of high-school movies clichés, it has 100x more charm than this liveless Instagram-feed-looking movie. Or if you are looking for a good romance featuring Asians, steer toward a good Korean drama.
