Cast Away (2000)
You`re gonna stare...
(possible spoilers)
I am not going to write the review on this picture. If you don`t mind, I would rather briefly write about my feelings. I watched Tom Hanks with an open mounth, wasn`t able to say anything. I was laughing when he was talking to his friend Wilson, when they argued or when they made the fire without lighter together. I was crying when he felt desperate or when he came back home. This movie is not that kind piece of art which is made by new method, some kind of art experiment, you know, this movie is not the revolution in film-making. But there are at least two things which make this title worth seeing. The first one is, as I mentioned before, the performance of Tom Hanks. It his very hard to write about it, it is just needed to be seen. The second reason why to watch Cast Away is the deep humanity of the story. I assure you, that your gonna think about it for a weeks. There is nothing more to write about. I was realy touched.
My rate is 10/10
Ravenous (1999)
THIS IS NOT FOR VEGETARIANS !!! :-)
This movie is really shocking. But - that`s good on the other hand. When you are watching most of Hollywood mainstream production, it will never move with you. I mean, it won`t touch you, that you are going to think about it for a weeks. I admit, there are some exceptions, but you can count them on one hand.
Well I assure you this movie will touch you (in a special way). It shows us some issues we would rather blink. It is speaks about things in society we would rather not to hear.
And besides this, this movie is great example of unique film-making. Most every part of this title is perfect. Guy Pierce + Robert Carlyle = a pleasure to watch them acting. I can`t forget the photography and especially the music. It is worth buying a sound-track - Michael Nyman is the Master. So, see this movie if you are bored with most of Hollywood mainstream and you would like to see something s p e c i a l...
Bon appétit!
P. S. I have to show my color: I am not the vegetarian :)
My rating 9/10
Y tu mamá también (2001)
Life is like a spoon drift - try think about it for a moment
Let me do one excursion:
There is a Czech film by the director Jan Sverak (that guy who made Kolya, The Dark Blue World, etc.). The film is called Jízda (The Ride)1994. Try to check it on the IMDb what is it about.
I have mentioned it because Czech distributor of Y Tu mamá tambien (And your mother too..) named this Mexican title as Mexická Jízda (The Mexican Ride) to get the audience into the cinema. There is also one girl with two guys and it is also a road-movie. But the similarity of these titles ends in this point. You can give some other examples that can join this titles, e.g. the runaway from society, reflecting the life, an effort to get know myself, hunger for freedom and so on, but by these points are characterized most of the road-movies - check Thelma and Louise :)
Well, back to Y Tu mamá tambien. I have enjoyed it. The teenagers are talking about girls, sex and drugs and I believe them. It is not like in American Pie - that was a Hollywood film made for the modish wave "young people are having their first kickoff". American Pie is a comedy about the life of teenagers, but Y tu mamá tambien is a life comedy of teenagers. So do not compare these titles only because of language.
In Y tu mamá tambien you can believe each word that they say. I have seen two Mexican movies in recent time : this one I am writing about at the moment and the another was Amores Perros (2000). If I could judge all Mexican cinematography through these two films (of course I could not), but lets suppose, I would say that Mexican cinematography is honest. It is about life with no trashy moving moments - and this I prize very high.
I won`t write in here what is this film about. I`m just saying: see it and think about it, because when you`re gonna think about it is not just entertainment - it will variegate your life.
So I am ending this comment (it is not actually the review) full of comparing one movie with the others and I am admonishing about checking The Ride (1994) by Jan Sverak.
Have a nice day.

Insomnia (2002)
Impressive, intelligent, great
This film could be a manual how to shoot good crime movies: 1) Write intelligent script with no black and white (good or bad) characters. 2) Try to find at least two actors that can handle these characters. 3) Set the story into an unusual location. 4) Find the best editor in Hollywood :) (Insomnia is perfectly edited)
Christopher Nolan (director) is a lucky guy, because he passed all these points. Al Pacino plus Robin Williams are on the top. I really enjoyed this movie. It has my full recommendation.
9/10
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)
Don`t waste your time with this s***
Very bad action film with quite good cast. Instead of some managed explosions and the body of Lucy Liu, there nothing that worth seeing.
One of the most boring movies I have ever seen. So, do not waste your time with this. There are much better action titles than this wannabe "spectacle".
4/10
The Transporter (2002)
Just say ENTERTAINMENT - because it is nothing more.
The Transporter is that kind of movie by which you really have to switch off your brain. It is very well done, with good camera, music, action, but unbelievably stupid story. By watching this movie, I had to laugh for many times.
So my advice is: If you wanna see tech managed action movie and the goal is only to entertain yourselves - see this movie. And dont think about the plot and things like this.
5/10
Vyssí princip (1960)
The World War II drama that you must see!
We are in Czechoslovakia during the World War II. The situation is very bad. Because of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazis are killing innocent people for least reasons. A few students from high school are going to be executed for a stupid little joke. Maybe their professor could head off it...
Strong movie made by Jiri Krejcik - the living classic of Czech film is the steady-state value of cinematography. After the end of this movie, you are gonna think about it at least for two weeks. I guarantee!
Black Hawk Down (2001)
Impressive experience 9/10
One of the strongest experience I had by seeing a war film. I have to adore the direction of photography by Slawomir Idziak (also photographed Gattaca - this movie has my best recommendation). The war was shocking. It wasn't may be that massacre that in Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan was, but some shots are rather disgusting. I think this movie can really activate feelings of horror, the feelings of the soldiers on battlefield. Worth seeing.
...a pátý jezdec je Strach (1965)
unique performance of Miroslav Machacek
Really great Czech film of the 60´s. I think the best picture by the director Zbynek Brynych. Armin Braun (performed by Miroslav Machacek) is a doctor of Jewish origin. In spite of the fact he could be killed by the Nazis and the whole block-of-flat with him, he is performing an operation of an injured revolter. While the operation is finished he has to find morphine to give it to the revolter because of big pains he has after the medical help.
We can see the excellent performance of Miroslav Machacek in the monologue part (by the way which lasts 3 minutes!!) in which he is deciding to help or not to help. I can recommend this movie to everyone who likes great acting in a good story.
