Captain Marvel (2019)
Below Marvel Standards in terms of entertainment and story; too powerful Main character
I would also argue that there were also too many changes to Miss marvel's story we all know. Guess I could live with that, as maybe most people could, and I am saying this mostly because Miss Marvel was never a core Marvel character. But still, it is good to see respect to the history of a established character thats been around for over 25 years. Same thing happened to the Skrulls, that now have been portrayed as sort of good guys when we have seen them as anthagonists to Human race ever since they were introduced in the Marvel Universe.
But the fact is the movie feels overall below Marvel high bar in terms of fun and story. Also, the heroe is too powerful. It is on a league of its own. Unless they come up with some sort of a kriptonite to balance the odds, in the way she is portrayed she could face all the characters in the MCU together with an arm tied to her back.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
It is entertaining.
It makes you care for the main character, and makes you curious for the whole dystopian scenario, how it came about and so on.
It is shocking to see that in a few short years US as we know it became what it did, as the story suggests, so it makes keep you wanting to understand what happened that might have led to such scenario, and how acceptable the whole premisses are. And thats where the show started to let me down.
We all know that tyrannical theocracies have existed and still do in many Islamic societies. Sharia Law is the goal wherever there is Islam in significante numbers, so there will always be a growing risk of a tyranical, opressive rule against women and minorities as islam grows in a society. Is it unlikely that might happen in the west? It may someday come out to exist in the West, given certain circunstances. But it is a much weaker proposition to say a theocracy based in judeo christian values may take hold nowadays in western societies, as depicted in the show. So it all feels too unrealistic as the show progresses and you start to figure out the puzzle of how things turned out be that way.
Another dent in the plausability argument is that the US, the freest and wealthiest society in the world, seem to have fallen to this dystopic theocratic regime while you see refernces that other parts of the west, such as Canada an Europe, remains functioning as liberal democracies.
There is suspense and drama, I have seen 5 episodes and makes me care. But it is feeling more an more like a piece of SJW propaganda as it progresses.
Justice League (2017)
Not bad. But should have been better.
Batman very good once again. WW too. Although I'd prefer to see the traditional versions of heroes, I liked the changed Aquaman, with a more powerful and with a badass looks and attitude. There was not much development of the character, but we all know him and he is goingo to have his own solo movie, so thats not a major problem. IMHO, Cyborg was not a choice that made sense for a JLA origin movie. He is originally a Teen Titans character. They managed to make some good sense for his being there, though. As for the Flash, he is just too differente from the character I grew up with as a DC fan. Too young and clumsy and clearly effeminate. Not that there's anything wrong with a gay character, just with the turning of Barry Allen into one.
So overall it was a fun experience. But not yet the DC movie that does justice to JL.
Daredevil (2003)
Director's cut - MUCH better!!
I am a long time Daredevil fun. I liked the movie when it hit the theaters, although felt it could have been much better. Too many plot holes and little carachter development are key bad points. Still, it was enjoyable to watch, gave it a 7/10. Now the DC's out...and it feels so much better to watch. The side story adds depth and makes you care more about the characters and their motivations. Ben Urich, King Pin, Bullseye, Foggy Nelson...they have a much better treatment on the DC. The funny sequences with Foggy help break the prevailing too dark atmosphere. Also, the wrap-up of the story has all the gaps filled.
I gave the DC a 9/10. One of the best comic adaptations ever.
Elektra (2005)
Not that bad
Given the whole lot of awful reviews, I thought Elektra was gonna be Marvels equivalent to Catwoman. But the movie, while not doing justice to the classic comic version of Frank Millers creation, still ended up being fairly entertaining . Yes, things would have been so much better had they stuck to Rated R, had a faster pace, less villains and better character development. But it is still entertaining enough not to deserve these terrible reviews. I think someone who is not familiar with the comics has a better chance to enjoy the movie than a fan, since there were too many adaptations to make Elektra more palatable to the great audience.
My wife is not a fan and enjoyed it. I am a long time fan since the 80s, gave it a 6.
O Invasor (2001)
Miklos Rocks!! No pun intended...
My short comment for this flick is go pick it up. Chances are you are going to be positively surprised by a diversity of elements superbly explored in this criminal thriller. There is no way the character of Miklos, claiming and pushing for room in every way possible, wont push your nerves to the edge...2 thumbs up!
Signs (2002)
EXTREMELY disappointing... Real JOKE!
There has been quite some time since a movie have disappointed me as much as this one. It goes pretty well up until the last 20 minutes, when it derails on a desperate will of putting up the two different agendas together (aliens/faith). Could work out fine, and it should have... But the director just shows how bad he is. He is far from successful, specially because spoiler here) the treatment the aliens receive in the end is pure non sense!!! The way they leave earth all of a sudden... Helloooo, havent a civilization that seems to be light years ahead of ours ever heard of space suits?
Well, there is a message, beautiful and all? Yes. But the aliens in the plot are totally unnecessary for it to be delivered.
Its a joke, and a real bad one.
Surf Adventures: O Filme (2002)
Surf's up!!!
Bunch of surfers on a trip through the best spots out there. Beautiful landscapes, top notch Brazilian surfers kicking ass on awesome waves... From my perspective, its a winning proposition.
Its more of a documentary than a movie per se. Having said that, the flick successfully awakens that part of us that crave for adventure and freedom, which is the essence of the surfing spirit. My guess is that even non surfers are going to get caught by the atmosphere.
I gave it an 8. Go for it.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Interestingly weird
That kind of movie that gets better the more you think of it. Though I haven't been able to get a consensus wrap up with friends that have seen it too, the incredible thing is that I couldn't find anyone who hasn't been caught up by its weirdness.
Go get it.
Liam (2000)
More of the same
Dont expect this movie to surprise you. Its a movie on a family that faces poverty and starvation, how each member deals with this new situation, and the consequences that separate actions bring to the group. The little boy is endearing and keeps you involved as a viewer. The whole society/school/religion/prejudice and its permanent effects on peoples lives is there well dealt with, albeit on a predictable fashion.
Just regular.
Ali (2001)
Definetely not just Boxing...
The movie develops too much on the other aspects of Ali's life. All of them interesting enough to keep the movie going ok. But fighting aspects (his training and the sequence on his career) are given very low attention. Besides, boxing scenes are weak. And that is a major setback for anyone who watches a movie on the greatest boxer of all times...
Impostor (2001)
A mix of lots of things youve seen before...
Overall, it is not that it sucks... It is just revolves around a real predictable plot, while trying to be original. Well, it does surprise you a bit at the very end, but not as much to fill the gap for rating it a good movie. Dont expect a Blade Runnerish blast.
The cast helps keep your interest alive along the movie.
