A Single Man (2009)
Collin Firth at his best
To me this is one of the best movies I ever watched. I have followed Collin Firth's work for a long time and his performance in A Single Man is absolutely brilliant! Outstanding, I must add. With modern times comes modern thinking and to be able to show this so well in such a short period of time, is amazing. I know Nicholas Hoult from Skins and he has developed a lot since then. That is most likely due to his mature character which he acted great. I want to point out one thing that to me is a very important matter: being gay. Being gay doesn't take away your feelings or your rights to live a free life. George (Collin Firth) suffered a great amount of pain and void when his boyfriend passed away in a car accident. And even though his boyfriend's family acknowledged their relationship they did NOT let George go to the funeral. 'Only to family' as if he wasn't family. The movie takes place in the 60's I think but the minds of nowadays men and women are still so closed. Our minds should be wide open to different sexual orientations. Life's too short not to live it fully.
This movie took me to a place where I found my self very sensitive. The loss of a loved one. The pain, the void and the loneliness surrounding it. A Single Man moved me and amplified my support for gay relationships and I must add, I am a full straight woman. The movie shows how brief a happy moment in life can be: just at the end of the movie George is happy to be in the company of a young man he really liked, Kenny. After only one mere night his life ends and so does the new-found happiness.
A must-see.
Step Up 3D (2010)
Best dance movie I've ever seen!
First of all I must say I'm a dance lover...And when I say lover, I mean it. I have watched all Step Up movies (1,2 and 3D) and this last one is without a doubt the best one. Character and script wise it was still very predictable but what movie isn't? (aside from Remember Me) Being inside the dance world has brought to the understanding I now have of music and motion. The passion I have for dance is portrayed in Step Up 3D in a documentary way and I don't think that any dancer could ask for more. Also the passion for film is well explicit in this movie. If you love the arts you should probably be buying your ticket! Not only does the movie show you how good it feels to dance but also the meaning of friendship in between. And how hard it is to survive in the dance world. A new kind of family emerges. As for the producer, the well known Adam Shankman, judge from So You Think You Can Dance, great work once again! Also from SYTYCD are all-stars Twitch and Legacy. GREAT WORK. Although I expected more from Twicth.
Overall Step Up 3D is a must-see. Hope you enjoy!
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
This one's heavy
This is such a punch in the face for those of you who are experimenting all kinds of stuff: stop while you still can. There is no point in throwing your life away for a moment of adrenaline. I'm a 17-year-old girl and I acknowledged the consequences of drug abuse. I just didn't seem to quite comprehend the whole misery around it. Requiem is a heavy movie but is also a worth seeing one! There were some parts in it that I could barely watch such as the ones where Jared Leto (Harry) would show his bruised arm. I think the morals in this are quite well shown: all kinds of drugs get you addicted. Just think for a moment of the consequences that are portrayed: amputated arm, addiction, insanity, prostitution, prison... it is all so sad.
I must say I will never try on drugs.
An American Crime (2007)
Insane
I just finished watching this movie...I haven't got many words right now. I am in a state of shock and terror. My mind is frozen with thoughts that can not be explained. Just the thought of this movie being based on a real story of an Indiana housewife that in her full consciousness treats Sylvia as a piece of nothing...it's mind bogging. In the 1960's Gertrude had 6 kids of her own and two more that she gave housing to: Sylvia and Jennie. Their parents worked on fairs and therefore decided to leave the girls with this woman they didn't even know. In my point of view, the parents couldn't guess what was about to happen but was it correct to leave their kids behind so they would argue less? This was their excuse. The following events just killed me a little on the inside. How can someone be so cruel to another human being? How can someone be so despised by an equal? And then have the courage to testify against all she's done? I could not keep my eyes off the screen, everything around me was ignored. My mind was completely shut down. It is such a sad yet touching story. It portrays very well the emotionless characteristics of some people in our non-civilized society. Outstandingly moving!
I do not recommend if you are too sensitive. It is a very serious matter.
Thank you very much for this piece of work.
The Cove (2009)
A wake up call
It saddens me to watch this inhumane slaughter going on in Taiji, Japan. Once Dolphins were protected, considered equally important as the Human race. Now WE take control of all creatures, taking away all their rights. WE use them for our own joy and entertainment. Does it seem fair to you? Because to me it does NOT. It is time to stop what is not only going on in the coast of Japan but also in Denmark and among others countries! Don't you think for a second that your country does not participate in any kind of related illegal operation, because it does. It may be top secret, may take place in such secretive spots that even the inhabitants don't know about these happenings. Just like mentioned in the documentary. At such outstanding rates Dolphins are being killed from September to March. Think about it. Thousands of Dolphins are being killed as I write this movie review! Doesn't it bother you?! I for one consider animals to be our equal and to deserve the same respect and treatment as WE, humans, deserve. If we want people to be treated as ONE people no racial distinction, why not start by animals? They are being discriminated against! Please, HELP stop this! It is mandatory that all nations unite against these murderers. Don't think of the money fisherman and the government can make by killing these kind animals. It it not much, considering it is a life we are talking about! God did NOT give us the power to take away each other's lives. So don't do it to animals just because they are animals and you suppose they don't have feelings. They do have! They feel pain as much as we do! They cry, they communicate, they give birth! Please do something as I am now speechless. I hope this helps you realize it is time to do something, anything! WE DO NOT HAVE THE POWER TO TAKE SO MANY LIVES!
May god help us. Excellent documentary, thank you for your hard work.
Jennifer's Body (2009)
Worst movie of 2009? Most likely.
Seriously? Don't watch it. It's a waste of time. Sucks in every way: soundtrack, acting, special effects, dialog... OMG. I love Adam Brody and even his performance wasn't good! What a huge disappointment... I gave it a 2 for...nothing really. Although Megan Fox lost weight and didn't go in the sun for a while blah blah blah she still didn't look like a teenager. Huge flaw right there. Should have found someone else for that role. And what really got me bored was the simple fact that the soundtrack revolves around 3 songs. Listening to the same stuff for 1h40min...I'm glad I watched it on Youtube and didn't spend my money on the ticket! NOT WORTH IT. Also Diablo Cody isn't really a writer because a writer MUST know how to write, correct? I think so. ;) She doesn't know.
Congrats on the making of the worst movie of '09! ;)
The Soloist (2009)
loved it
I simply found it wonderful to watch. It might be a little harsh on sensitive people but above all that it's such a great movie! I for instance do not agree with the previous comment. If you're sad, you should watch this movie! It's inspiring in so many ways and it shows off the poverty many people live in. So if you have a home, food on your table and a family you can count on, you live a happy life. Not everybody is that lucky! This movie made me realize how important a friendship is to every single person on Earth. It showed that having everything isn't the most important thing, but having what you are passionate about, that is what matters the most. I hope many people will think alike. It's a must-see!
Stripper Academy (2007)
omg.
I was shocked with the nonsense in this movie. The whole thing just isn't real, it's absurd. I think that throughout the entire movie they only played one song...it would be understandable if it was a good one, but come on! How is this topic interesting enough to even make a movie out of it? Did they seriously think it would be a huge success?! I mean... This is the first comment I am making and for one simple reason: this movie is not worth seeing. And for so many reasons! The cast is miserable, the theme even worst and not to mention the way things take its course in it! It's a promiscuous film. Hated it and do not recommend you guys watch it! Congrats on the making of such a bad movie!
