Empire of Light (2022)
Olivia is Amazing
I do not think this film got the reviews it deserves. The acting and cinematography are stellar and the story is touching and thought provoking. I especially appreciated that the characters were not overly sentimental and predictable. Since I watched the film over a month ago, I have not stopped thinking about it, which - in my opinion - makes it great. Best of all, Olivia Colman gives an emotionally gripping performance that I will never forget.
I am so grateful that the movie theater employee characters did not devolve into predictable caricatures. Also significant is the depiction and treatment of mental health issues - real, sensitive, thought provoking, and touching, without being overly sentimental. I could use these same exact words to describe Colman's performance. She is fabulous. It's so easy to give in to gratuitous, overly sentimental depictions of mental health struggles, bravo to Empire for not giving in to "easy".
The Big Gay Sketch Show (2006)
I think it is funny
I am a gay college professor. I am intelligent, funny, and a host of many other good things. I find the show hysterical. I think it demonstrates how far we have come - something of a rite of passage. We are now strong and powerful enough in that we can make fun of ourselves - just like heterosexuals. I believe it also highlights the outright ignorance of stereotypes. Much can be learned through humor. Of course we still have a way to go, but this show is a big step along the way. Anybody who would watch this show and have it reinforce his or her negative beliefs about homosexuals is too moronic to be reached anyway. I give it 8 out of 10.
