Liu lang di qiu (2019)
Interesting subject, awful editing, god-awful English language localization, tiresome to watch
I saw an article about the possible scenarios of moving Earth from its orbit, mentioning this movie. I now realize that article was a paid advertisement, but alas, curiosity got the better of me and I convinced the GF to take a look at it on netflix.
As all the non-bot reviews point out, the characters are too shallow to feel a connection with them. The movie is so very a lot too much extremely action packed that there's no time left for character development, save for a couple of scenes where slo-mo flashbacks are supposed to make the audience emotional (instead these scenes feel so artificial that you get to despise the guys involved).
It is simply impossible to keep up with the story, because every story turn is simply arbitrary and action taken by the characters are not explained well (or at all). Why did that gal shoot at that core thingie to destroy it? Why were all those people from all nations around the globe pushing that thing (I don't know what that thing was)? Why was the guy shooting at Jupiter? etc. etc.
Another issue possibly contributing to this huge mess: Awful localization. English language dubbing is one of the worst I have ever seen. You can't understand who's speaking at a given moment, and that is one of the reasons why you cannot bond with the characters. The dubbing (and perhaps translation) is so awful that I suspect that may have cost 3 stars off the average review scores, on its own.
Plainly a waste of time.
Laws of Attraction (2004)
Mind numbingly formulaic
Overall, the movie is cute.
Pierce Brosnan is handsome and can act some.
Julianne Moore does her job well, but it's not a very hard job to begin with. She plays the role of an educated woman who uses her career as an excuse to run away from serious romance. She gets to be humiliated a substantial lot by James Bond. If I were a woman, I'd throw something on the screen and left the theater in the first half of the movie.
The script goes through the list of must-haves of romantic comedies.
You won't miss anything if you skip this one.
Gönül Yarasi (2005)
wonderful soundtrack, shower of tears
Gonul Yarasi begins with sketches from three different lives, and moves on to unite them with frequent references to fate. Fate as the axis of the movie makes it hard for the scenario to follow the laws of physics always, especially given the obvious weaknesses in the script and some conversations. For instance, what did Nazim, the main character, with all the salaries he earned as a teacher, that he has to work as a taxi driver when he retires? Yet don't let such holes in the scenario bother you and drift into the flow of the events, and listen the wonderful soundtrack, you will soon be in tears. Movie's zenith comes when Nazim and his daughter "talk" to each other.
