Feliz Ano Velho (1987)
Lack of Funds
If you want to watch a good film in the weekend, watch out for some films that may be available at your local movie store. Maybe Feliz Ano Velho isn't the ideal movie for a weekend session; unless you want to drive yourself crazy. This was originally an autobiographical book wrote by Marcelo R. Paiva telling the story of the accident that made him paraplegic. Later, the book was made into film, starring some awesome Brazilian actors such as Marco Nanini and Eva Wilma. The film tells almost the same story from the book. Marcelo is a young man that is in college and lives with some of his friends. He dates a beautiful girl. One day they travel to a place in the countryside where there is a lake, and in an act of foolish exhibitionism trying to imitate superman, I'd say jumps from the top of a hill into the lake and hits a rock with his head. Even though he is immediately removed to a nearby hospital he becomes paraplegic. After the accident Marcelo's life changes. He tries to learn how to live without his legs but for some time it seems he will never make it. His friends and family gather beside him, meanwhile he remembers how his life was good before the accident with which the film begins. Excellent actors and a good story: enough to make many people want to watch it. But there's a problem: budget was too short. Bad lighting, bad scripting and some inexpressive actuations make this film impossible to watch. Seldom are films I dislike, but this one was enough to drive me crazy. Perhaps someone should do a remake.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
One of the most intelligent films i've ever watched
Silence of the Lambs is one of those unique films. Some see Dr Hannibal Lecter as a maniac, hannibal the canibal. That's not the way I see him. Hannibal Lecter is a former psychiatrist ho became mad and started eating human meat. When the film starts, he is in a kind of special prision for danger mad people. There is a murderer free and agent Clarice Starling (not yet an agent at that time, but a student in FBI) is recruited to interview Dr Lecter in order to find out information about the murderer. Dr Lecter is one of the most intelligent characters present in films nowadays and Silence of the lambs is the best film I've ever watched.
