White Noise 2: The Light (2007)
A good supernatural thriller.
I liked this film.
I liked the actors, the characters, the scares, the effects, the pacing ..... and the premise (almost).
But one thing started bugging me about half way through. Its petty, but really bugged me. The film's premise is that the central character, having survived a near death experience, can now spot those about to die and act to prevent their deaths. However, if he saves them, then several days later they are possessed by evil spirits (or some such) and do bad things. Fine, but the central character was himself saved from dying by medics who saw he was about to die and restarted his heart, so why wasn't he possessed several days later? I guess the supernatural just doesn't work like that.
Aside from that I really liked the film (I liked the characters so much I even cried at the sentimental bits at the end).
House of the Dead (2003)
Average Zombie film with good action sequences.
Uwe Boll films seem to get a hard time from critics.
Personally I don't see why. I've watched a fair few zombie films in my time and 'House Of The Dead', like most of Boll's films is not that bad.
Fairly standard Zombie film. 'Heros' get introduced, find themselves away from help, surrounded by zombies, fighting for survival and trying to escape.
OK, as horror films go, it's not up there with Day of the Dead or Aliens, but is certainly better than most of the low budget 'classics' that so many seem to venerate.
The action sequences are very well done. Lots of shooting, movement, well timed.
The insertion of the video game sequences is done about as well as it good be. Each game sequence appears to be placed alongside a analogous film sequence (eg zombie with axe). But its an early version of the game so the graphics are poor and detract from the generally good action sequence its placed alongside.
The low budget shows in a couple of scenes, such as the initial 'rave' scene with few party goers in sight, but otherwise quality is good. There are also some incongruous 'set piece' moments such as when the Captain character opens his 'hidden box of guns' and everyone takes their pick - complete with cheesy dialogue along the lines of "A desert eagle, I like your way of thinking, lady" - but I find that sort of stuff endearing.
Characters are quite likable too.
Overall a 7 (which, to me, means i'll watch this film a couple of times).
