Hungry Hearts (2014)
Everybody misses out the crucial part
I haven't seen a single review that hasn't bypassed the origin of Mina's pregnancy. How does she get pregnant? Well she announces she's leaving and her boyfriend deliberately comes inside her, leading her to get pregnant and remain with him.
I'm not saying that he was necessarily doing it out of pure manipulation, but if you all viewed her actions as a reaction to that original violation of trust, I think you'd understand the film better.
Juno (2007)
Unbelievably Prententious
Reading reviews by critics, a common idea seems to be the one that it's a "cool" light in which to portray teenagers "accurately". Wrong. I'm 18 years old and was disgusted by the creation of stupid slang words in the script in a bid to sound quirky. It's so sure of being "down with the kids" , instead only proving how it doesn't get the younger generation at all. The basic plot and morals - that was fine. Teenage pregnancy is always full of tough decisions and it's an important issue. I wouldn't be one to come away sure that what Juno had decided was wrong or right, it's up to the individual person. Performance from Jennifer Garner was nice enough but I was relieved when "Inception" came out and I saw that Ellen Page was actually capable. I don't think the script was her friend, and it well and truly screwed up the movie for me. If I hear one more critic describe it as "cool" or "quirky"... well, they're wrong.
