Road House (2024)
A fun, action throwback that didn't and shouldn't be taken too seriously!
Having never seen the original, I went into this movie with no comparisons or expectations.
As a MMA fan I was interested in seeing how Conor McGregor performed in his first feature film and if a cartoon/super hero villain was what he was going for, he certainly hit the mark.
The storyline itself is ridiculous of course, the idea of bringing in a former UFC fighter to be a bouncer instead of contacting the authorities immediately takes you out of the 'real world', and most of the action scenes that follow are comic book like to say the least.
I felt it was a film of two halves, as despite the premise being so unrealistic, the introduction of Dalton and the first confrontation made it as if the fight scenes and conflicts would be at least based in reality.
Once McGregor appeared, the film took on a completely different feel and became a very over the top action affair.
Definitely one to sit back, relax and enjoy rather than to think or over analyse.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Switch off brain before viewing
The perfect definition of a "popcorn movie".
It's full of amazing effects, loud and adrenaline fuelled action scenes and the children loved it.
The story however was little bit of a mess, even when not expecting anything Oscar winning going into it.
Far too many convenient coincidences, such as just happening to have a metal right handed fist just lying around in hollow earth, makes even a fantasy movie hard to follow.
And therefore hard to become invested in when we move from one action set piece to the next with no real feeling of jeopardy.
The monsters all did their thing but the human 'comic relief' didn't really hit the spot for me.
I guess sometimes it's ok to just sit back and enjoy some dumb entertainment on the big screen from time to time though.
Not one I will remember or watch again.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Great Ghostbusters movie!
Not really sure why this film has received the luke warm reviews that I have seen or in particular what those writers expected from a Ghostbusters movie!?
I found it to be a brilliant, 'popcorn flick' with some great nostalgia thrown in for anyone who grew up with the originals.
Great to see the return of the original cast including Walter Peck which really brought back some memories from the 1984 classic.
It's not just a film for the oldies either as my 9 year old absolutely loved it too, in fact he gave it "20 out of 10" and called it the "best film he has seen"
Definitely one of the better reboots of the 80/90s and one easily enjoyed if you allow yourself to be.
