Legacy of Kain: Defiance (2003 Video Game)
Delivers on every level.
23 November 2003
Legacy of Kain fans have waited around 2 years to play this game. Both Soul Reaver 1 and 2 left off at huge cliffhangers (SR2 even more so), and it left the player desperately wanting to find out what happens next in the story. However, something that has somewhat alienated the fanbase is that Defiance was made to attract newcomers to the series as well as wrap up pretty much all the story questions for long time fans. Both of these are accomplished.

Chances are you're reading this because you've heard good things about the game. Well worry you not long time LoK fan or newcomer, Defiance is spectacular.

Gameplay:

Let me tell you, I played this thing to death and never got bored. The only time I put it down was when I was sleepy as hell, and this was stopping at around 1:30am after playing 5-6 hours straight.

Defiance is extremely fun to play and easy to get into. One of the goals of the fighting system was to make the player feel like a badass and make the fighting epic. That goal was certainly accomplished, you'll be hard pressed to get tired of kicking ass, and if you do, you'll be pumped up to do it the next time you play the game.

One thing that does get slightly annoying though, is the camera. It looks amazing, but sometimes doesn't play very well, particularly when making certain jumps. Sometimes the angles are just too awkward to jump at and it's hard to react in time or judge how far they are. Hopefully this little problem will be ironed out in the next LoK game.

The control system works remarkably well. You'd think since the PS2 pad has more buttons, the controls would be awkward when 'converted' over to the Xbox (''Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance'' springs to mind). This is not the case, and it makes me think that quite a few buttons on the PS2 pad must do nothing.

In case you're wondering (and speaking of the PS2 version anyway), the Xbox version has the following major advantages over it:

  • Slightly sharper graphics - Larger draw distance - Progressive Scan mode - Widescreen capability - No frame rate drop - Less load times

One last issue concerning Gameplay, and something I feel is important to note, is that players need not worry when switching between Kain and Raziel since the button commands are contextually the same for both of them. For example, jumping then holding A/X will result in both of them slowly floating down when playing as them. So worry you not, there are no new control schemes to learn or remember.

Story:

The story has always been the backbone of the series. Long time LoK fans were initially concerned about the implementation of a new combat system, worried that the story would suffer as a result. Fortunately, this was not the case. Nothing was downgraded or prioritized less to make room for it, improvements were added on at the sacrifice of nothing.

SR2 was all about the story, it was what made it so epic and praised by fans. Defiance not only goes beyond it in quality of story, but gameplay too. Defiance has taken the crown of every LoK fans favourite game. The cinematics were spectacular and the ending scenes just blew me away.

LoK fans, this is the game you've been waiting for. If the law of mathematics allowed it, I'd give this 11/10.

Graphics:

Better than ever before. The environments are spectacular and I've spent a good 20-30 mins of gameplay time looking at and pondering over the many mysterious murals scattered through the game.

There are however, glitches here and there. Nothing big, the only problems seem to be Raziel's wings and a clash of polygons every now and then. I did run into this really stupid glitch where I was slammed through the floor and proceeded to fall to my death.

It wasn't really much of a hassle as dying doesn't really matter, checkpoints are conveniently frequent.

Sound:

Everything is top notch. I was never a fan of the music like some long time LoK fans are, but it was very good overall and I thought ''Ozar Midrashim'' played during two certain epic fights was a touch of genius (the theme for the SR1 intro).

The voice acting is, as ever, superb. Ask anyone who's ever played an LoK game, they won't tell you any different. The cinematics captivated me and the ending scenes was truly emotional, it moved me more than any movie ever has.

Replayability:

Definitely replayable. If not for the story, then definitely for the fighting system.

Buy or Rent?

This is definitely one to buy. Onward, LoK fans!

Grease 2 (1982)
I hate Grease

This movie sucks. It's about one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Clearly an attempt of a cash in from the success of the first movie. Bad directing, bad acting, bad music, bad script bad everything. Steer clear at all costs. This movie gets no mercy from me.

Soul Reaver 2 (2001 Video Game)

Fang-tastic
28 June 2002
A thousand words still isn't enough to say how excellent this game is. The voice acting in this game is truly excellent and each and every line is spoken with heart and feeling, along with an excellent and well thought out script, you just don't want to stop playing. Which is a shame, because the game is actually quite short. Also, the ending is left at yet ANOTHER cliff hanger, which leaves you wanting to play the third installment right away.

The graphics look excellent and the lip syncing is perfect, the facial expressions on each characters face can be clearly seen and you know exactly what their current emotion is, adding to the cinematic style of game play. Which, by the way, is excellent.

Each and every character in the game is regarded with the utmost detail, you have to play this game to see what a great job Crystal Dynamics have done with this game.

The battle system is also something to marvel at, It's so eloquently laid out so that you can get to grips with it within minutes. It's also fun to fight your enemies as while you're in battle with them they shout out things at you like:

''I'll send you to hell vampire!''

''I'll free your soul!''

''Return to hell!''

The characters have so much depth and personality, that at times you forget they're just graphics with people doing their voice. This game also contains about as much special features as a 2 disc DVD film (The features are earned by completing the game).

The only bad thing I have to say about this game is that the save system is a bit frustrating, not the actual saving, but the various dungeons/temples are quite challenging (which is good,) but, unlike in Soul Reaver, which I only bought after playing through Soul Reaver 2, it doesn't save your progress in the dungeons, you cannot save anywhere like you could in the first Soul Reaver.

There are a range of power-ups and modifications you can make to your primary weapon, the soul reaver, by completing the various forges, you can add elements to your reaver to help you in other situations (like melting ice with the fire reaver, for instance) and to kill enemies with.

As i said this game has so much depth, and each and every cinematic is excellent and professionally laid out (Soul Reaver 2's directing is considered movie quality) which is most probably where you would get most of the reply value, to view these excellent cinematics over and over again.

There are practically no loading times in Soul Reaver either, you can literally just turn on your PS2 and begin playing in minutes, so if you love your games with great story lines, graphics, game play and an all-round good time, then I advise you to and get this quick!

Great documentary on the REAL Afghanistan
24 June 2002
A hard hitting documentary with presenter Saira Shah who goes out of her way to show you what the Afghanistan not shown in the press is like. Including a particularly disturbing visit to the Afghanistan football staidum (soccer) that is instead used for executions. Not especially original, but you are guaranteed to have found out some significant things you never knew about Afghanistan after the documentary is finished. I strongly recommend this documentary to anyone who are interested in Afghanistan.

Citizen Kane (1941)

Anyone who didnt like this film....open your eyes and looks again
24 June 2002
never have i been so excited before and after a film. i never ever allow myself to be dragged into hype, but it happens when you hear things about a certain movie and then it lets you down. but then theres a movie that goes beyond what you expected, better than you couldve hoped and you wet yourself on what you done.

there has only ever been ONE other film that ive watched that when it finished i started it all over again and that was fight club, but that was me just trying to clear some things up. but kane, i got swept into the story and smashed away by the script, i had to go back for another go, ive seen it more than 20 times now and everytime it seems to get shorter. i guess its true tie flies by when your having fun.

the film is so perfect in everyway, script, direction, acting and sound. oh god the sound; its brilliant. i cant think of another movie that can ever hope to replicate this movie in its sheer design and yet i cant think of one movie that hasnt been influenced by it somehow.

think of the usual suspects, where through a series of flashbacks you try to uncover who kyzer soze is, well its the same thing here, the movie starts off with a man dying on his bed with his last words being rosebud, in an attempt to write something unique from other newspapers the inquirer sends out a reporter to find out what was meant by his dying words; 'rosebud'. and through this we have the reporter uncovering the most intimate details of the life of Charles Foster Kane, from his childhood to his death.

this IS one of the greatest films of all time and no matter what anyones review is, i challenge anyone to tell me they didnt enjoy it. this is a rare treat in cinema and one that is getting rarer ever since.

Groovy!
16 June 2002
This is one helluva movie, as the Duke himself would put it. Bruce Campbell puts all his one liners power to use. Blood, Action, One liners and a cocky hero, this movies got it all. A real pleasure to watch from start to finish. The great thing about this movie is that even if you haven't seen it's predecessors (Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2) you can still sit down and enjoy this movie thoroughly.

Funny thing about this trio of movies, the first one is all out horror, the second is Horror with a comedy element and this amazing finale is all out Comedy with Action.

I strongly recommend this movie to anyone!

(And it was Ash that first said "Hail to the king, baby." Not Duke Nukem!)

Greatest movie of all time
9 June 2002
This is one of the best movies for anyone because if you like cheasy action movies with one liners then you'll love this, but if you're like me and think that action comedys like this are just pure pieces of art then you'll want to see this movie over and over again.

I have to admit after seeing escape from new york i wasn't that excited to see this because it just seemed like an update but it is so much better and will you keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

By the way Bruce Campbell is in this movie and has one of the best appearences in any movie ever created and if you look closely you can also see an appearence by the wwf wrestler Triple H even though he wasn't that popular when the movie was made.
