Macheads (2009)
Ruined by Soundtrack
Macheads is an interesting premise not all that well executed. It wants to examine the history of Apple owners who have been and still are besotted by their computers. I'm one of them so was anticipating an interesting little documentary. Unfortunately it is mainly ruined by a deafeningly loud instant-migraine techno-thump soundtrack that often comes near to drowning out what the interviewees are saying.
One Mac woman who lives in a caravan in what looks like a peaceful forest is barely audible above noise that sounds like party night at the local hiphop club.
This seems to follow the premise that if it's not deafinin' then it's not happenin'.
In the Heat of the Night (1967)
No cigarettes!
Yet another extraordinary feature of this beautiful, intelligent film is that no one smokes. Nobody. Not the leads, or the support actors, or the good old boys in the background.
It would be amazing enough today, but how did they manage it in 1967?
Every character in this film is flawed, the odd couple leading protagonists develop the to be expected acknowledgement of each other's basic decency, but not in a formulaic or sentimental way.
It's also a reminder of how recent and sinister the overt racism of the South was, and how quickly it all has been resolved. An example of the world becoming a better place.
