The Effects of Lying (2023)
An opportunity missed
I had high expectations for this show, hoping it would be a game-changer in portraying British Asian life on TV. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. The script and dialogue, while aiming for a universal appeal, ended up feeling a bit too generic. It's as if they ironed out all the unique South Asian nuances to fit any culture, which didn't really ring true for a typical South Asian family setting in this scenario.
There was also this rather peculiar scene where the protagonist is having a serious chat with his child while, in the next room, his wife is in a rather compromising situation with someone else. This just seemed a bit off to me. It felt like a missed opportunity to delve deeper into more genuine character development for all the characters.
On the brighter side, it's great to see efforts being made to bring South Asian characters and faces to the screen. Hats off to ITV for taking the first steps. I'm hopeful that future shows will capture the true essence of British Asian life in a way that's both accurate and engaging.
