Midsomer Murders: Harvest of Souls (2016)
Fire the sound editor
This has nothing to do with the plot, but this episode had the worst sound editing of any MM I've watched in over 20 years. It begins with extraordinarily loud screaming from the thrill ride passengers, then dips to whispers outside a pub, then up again with background music, booming gunshot, and horse neighing. Back to normal conversational levels, back to screaming, then conversations downed by screaming, and down an up again. I was on the volume control constantly, and finally had to leave it down and turn on closed captions.
Maybe it was just a badly transferred episode, but this technique only detracts from the plot, characters, and dialog.
Uncut Gems (2019)
The music!!
I can't evaluate the movie as a whole, or give an opinion of Adam Sandler's performance since I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes because of the loud and inappropriate foreground music which drowned out all dialog and made it unwatchable. Just in case it was only in the opening scenes I skipped ahead a couple of times, but the irritating music was relentless. My only hope that this was a Netflix decision and not the director's and that it can be adjusted in the future. What a waste.
Star Trek: Picard: Stardust City Rag (2020)
Gene would be so disappointed
Gratuitous horror, torture, mercy killing. Another child hates parent subplot right out of Tommy. The samurai is the comic relief. What a mess.
The only reason I gave 3 stars instead of just 1 was because 7 of 9 was there.
Mystery 101: Playing Dead (2019)
Really, really, really stupid cop
Opening scene, hours before dawn, abandoned downtown streets, a lone lady jogger comes across broken glass of a closed store, glances at her phone to check the time, and then ...
does what? Dial 911 on her phone? NOPE! She does something dumb. And she's a COP!!!
Star Trek: Discovery: The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry (2017)
Fast forwarding helps
A plot is actually starting to appear. What really helps is fast forwarding through the Klingon scenes and just reading the captions. Who really cares why Klingons do what they do. Wasn't the Universal Translator invented by this time?
Lucifer: Let Pinhead Sing! (2018)
The Writers Got the Week Off
But at least the choreographer got some work done. It's so predictable that when the featured subject is a singer, half of the show is filled with generic song and dance, the plot and sub-plots are the lamest in the series history, and my thumb was on fast forward a lot. No surprises here.
