Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach (2009)
Aimed for a specific audience
When I first read a review of this movie, I wasn't sure I'd even bother watching it. But, since I'm a major fan of Seann William Scott, I just had to. And I'm happy I did! There's no doubt that the humor is aimed for a specific audience, and if you're looking for mature jokes, at least decent acting and/or a great storyline, you may as well go find another movie, 'cause you won't get any of those things here.
However, if you, like myself, enjoy stupid jokes, immaturity on a high level, and acting that doesn't need to be great, as long as it's funny, you've got a winner right here. From little girls who apparently use the internet too much, to china men laughing their balls off, over to Indonesian table tennis players who don't speak a lick of English, this flick just kicks you in the nuts at every turn, and that in a good way, I might add.
Whenever I rate a movie, I don't look at individual acting, sets, lighting, directing or any other kind of technical pestilence. I aim directly at entertainment value on a personal level. And this movie entertained me all the way through, hence I give it an 8 out of 10. I advise everyone with a deep-in-the-dirt sense of humor to watch this, and hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
Thanks to the makers.
I Am Sam (2001)
Fit to make a grown man cry
I remember when I was about ten years old and watched Rainman for the first time. For weeks afterwards, I was convinced that Dustin Hoffman was mentally retarded, and I was amazed when I found out that he was just acting.
Now, as well as Sean Penn plays his role in this movie, and he does it very well I might add, he doesn't quite give me the same feeling as Hoffman did, way back when. But considering the entire movie, I really don't care. I'm left with a great feeling, the kind that you only have after having spent a certain amount of time being sad or angry. This movie made me feel both those feelings, sadness and anger.
I Am Sam is a movie I won't soon forget. The acting is great, the story, as much as we've all seen similar ones done before, draws you in just as it should, and it almost made me shed a tear or two, which is a very rare thing for me.
Watch it, that's all I can say. If you need action, thigh clapping laughter, or major surprises in a movie, you may find this a bit dull to begin with, but I'm sure that over the course of the movie, you'll find your emotions well entertained, and forced to react to what you see.
