While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Great Movie, Great Timing, Go See It!
Was I shocked to read from the trvia section on this webpage that this movie was originally written for Demi Moore? Of all the actresses in the world... Demi Moore??? She shed her innocence & sweetness when she made movies like "One Night Stand" (is it the correct title?) with Rob Lowe. It's like seeing Rosanne Barr/Arnold as Lucy in this film.
Great comical timing between Sandra & Bill. The scene where they walk back to Lucy's apartment is especially brightens your day. Of course, who can forget the whole Callaghan clan? It's rare to see such a close-knitted family in US anymore. It's heart-warming & touching & sweet & lovely & just terrific.
This movie reminds me not to fall in love with a person just because of the looks. Lucy was ready to marry Peter but didn't know that he was so self-obsessive (all HIS pictures in his wallet & home) and who would hurt squirrels & save them? I'm on Jack's side when I say "ye-wo". Look at the soft spoken, sweet Jack who puts family first (remember his rocking chair?) & is more down-to-earth.
Agreeing with the rest of the audience here who had posted their comments, this is THE movie to see when you're feeling a little blue, a little lonely, or just want to get out of reality for a few hours.
Well, I'll be waiting for my Jack Callaghan now. Wish you all enjoy the movie experience.
Windtalkers (2002)
Full of Action, Full of Emotion...
... depends on what you like. My friends who went to see with me enjoy the action, the war buddies plotlines which is quite the routine as far as war movies go (think The Thin Red Line & its likes). There is no special depiction of the baddies (the Japanese in the movie) because it's not about them, it's just about the war (any war) & the code (this one during WWII) & understanding, getting along with each other.
There are a lot of John Woo trademarks symbolisms & memorable quotes, but being taken into the world of Joe Enders (Nicholas Cage), my memory failed me. Cage is a really good action actor with that special touch of sentimentality without being labeled anything less than being a real man, a hero, or whatever we call these type of strong characters nowadays.
A must see for everyone, because of its reality face of war (any war, in today's world even), its reality face of humanity & it can also be something pure entertaining if you don't think too much about it.
Besides Cage, Adam Beach's eyes talk too! It's hard to come by actors today with talking eyes. Cage's eyes often can burn you with his anger or melt you with his love or sadness, & Beach's eyes just burn with anger & then concern & then... well, you get the picture. Greatly performed, greatly directed, & greatly written. Now, if you'd excuse me, I need to go take care of my tearful eyes.
Casper (1995)
Great Movie With Various Perspectives
After reading the comments, I see most people enjoy this movie with a few picking it over nothing (e.g. not an accurate portrait of ghost?). I first saw the movie in my preteen. It was a fun & 'cute' movie, highly entertaining with the trio & treasure hunting & stuff.
As I grew older & revisit this movie, I see more 'layers' of the movie other than a 'kiddie ghost story'. Dr. Harvey (Bill Pullman, excellent as usual) is having a hard time dealing with the death of his wife, & Kat (Ricci, a great break from the cool-headed Wednesday Adams) is having a hard time adjusting her father's constant move as well as grieving her mother on her own. Then, there is Casper grieving his own death as well as his father's death. And then there is Carrigan's mourning her father... not leaving her all the riches. Then there is Casper's heroic act (go see the movie, it's one of the most touching moment), Dr. Harvey's reunion, etc. etc.
From a child's point of view, it's pure entertainment. From an art lover's point of view, you have to awe at the special effect & sets. From an audience seeking emotional outlet, well, bring in an extra box of kleenex. It's a very touching, warm-hearted, humorous, sweet little movie about a friendly ghost named Casper.
Just a side note, it is quite interesting to watch Addams' Family & Casper & Sleepy Hollow & see Christina Ricci grow from the eccentric Wednesday Addams to a regular teenager Kat Harvey to a beautiful young lady Katrina Van Tessel.
Sommersby (1993)
Great Story, Realistic Emotionally But...
... there are just a bunch of historical errors. The time Jack was kept in the Union prison... well, there was no Union prison when he was supposedly to have been there among other mistakes. Being a history lover sometimes makes it difficult to enjoy a beautifully written movie.
Besides that, everyone played their roles very well. Never a big Foster or Gere or anyone's fans, I was touched by the characters. Foster's joy of the return of a 'better' Sommersby, lost when the truth was known. Gere's tenderness towards 'his' wife, kids, neighbors. Pullman's jealousy of Sommersby's return and then silent acceptance & defeat of the love lost. The movie opened during the time when Hollywood scripts were filled with mistakened identities & the likes yet this movie stands out because the realistic emotions depicted - the yearning of the return of a loved one at war, the denial to suspect a 180 degrees change of a husband returned... well, I'm only allowed 1000 words here so I'll end here for you to enjoy the film.
Lake Placid (1999)
A Movie Stands Apart From Its Genre
Usually, this type of movies have few - if not a lot - boring moments, but the characters' snappy lines toward each other is not the routine blah-blah lines we often see in this type of movie.
The first twenty minutes of the movie allowed more character development than any other movies of its kind. Bridget Fonda's snappiness & sarcasm works brilliantly & Brandan Gleeson's comments on others' sarcasm makes him that much realistic to me. Bill Pullman is the cool-headed one where every movie of this type must have such a leader, yet, he has a softer appeal than the macho/hero usually seen in this type of movie. Brilliant, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again which is extremely rare for me in for such genre.
The Virginian (2000)
A Good Western Apart From All The Others
I had never been a big fan of Western genre, but this movie captures a lot things not restricted to only Western genre. Bill Pullman is definitely one of the better actors you can rarely see nowadays with his coolness, determination, and gentleness shinning through each scene. His deep emotions along with Diane Lane's gentile yet determined performance made me glue to the screen to see the movie from start to finish which is a rarity when it comes to Western genre for me.
