The Midnight Club (2022)
Mike Flanagan's Worst (along with Absentia)
I've been watching all Mike Flanagan's shows and movies and they've all been enjoyable....well almost all. Absentia was so low budget and poorly acted I just couldn't get into it.
The Midnight Club, however, is just bad all around. The main character is written to be unlikable. We're introduced to her and right off the bat they want you to know she's so incredibly intelligent, and everyone just thinks she's amazing.... I swear, the actresses' dad must've paid the writers to say all this.
All the other kids talk snarky and sarcastically 24/7 like the writer thought this would make you think they're cool. It didn't, not one of them is relatable.
I could at least suffer thru Absentia, this I cut off after 1 episode, its hot garbage I'm sad to say. Finally, the casting doesn't remotely match the location, you'll see what I mean, it's one of those movies.
South to Black Power (2023)
Controversial idea has one HUGE flaw...
The purpose of this pseudo-documentary is to increase the political power of the Democrat party, it makes that clear many times, but it does it under the guise of "helping Black people reclaim their ancestral homes and power".
Couple problems with this thinking...
One, you're suggesting mass segregation for easy political gain rather than fixing problems inherent in the system.
And two, the South is ALREADY heavily Black with even the Reddest states voting Blue in their biggest cities.
I've studied American politics my entire life, it's just not possible to flip these states with so few people, and the filmmaker must know this already.
I don't get easily offended, but this is a VERY controversial suggestion the filmmaker is putting forward.
It's a fairly well made film, but the premise is so flawed it's more fantasy than fact so I can't rate it higher than a 3.
Rap Sh!t (2022)
Depressingly stereotypical...
I get that some people are one dimensional, doesn't mean I want to watch an entire series about them.
This show's downright depressing with its depiction of inner city youth. Yes, there's a whole generation being raised on garbage television and music, it's tragic, but it's certainly not something to emulate. I didn't graduate college and bust my butt working two jobs to have my children lured in by cultural poison like this.
Do yourselves a favor, don't glamorize stereotypes like these and certainly don't let your children watch this nonsense. There's nothing glamorous about these characters OR their lifestyles.
Old Dads (2023)
Second attempt at leaving a review.....
This site really needs to be clearer about what is or isn't allowed cause as far as I can tell I violated none of the community guidelines, and yet my review from last week vanished into the void some how so let's try AGAIN...
As I stated in my last review, "modern audiences" (aka the easily offended) will NOT enjoy this movie. The entire movie is one big jab at out-of-control political correctness. Worse, many of the more obnoxious characters in this movie wield PC like a weapon to silence and control free thought and expression. What keeps this from being a 10 is his unbelievable wife who is a character I could never see Burr being with, or at least not conforming to her every desire to stay with.
NOTE: All the best movies and shows have their scores "adjusted" down. The worst ones are "adjusted" up.
