amazing real stories of saving endangered species
21 October 2012
this two-part doc has such a beauty to it, you just want to fall in love with Nature even if you've hardly ever noticed it (I think that was a big part of their way to entice you with their idea : show people how beautiful Nature can be, and maybe they'll be a little more concerned about it) It's pretty unbelievable that no one's reviewed this little masterpiece of a film or even voted on it. When you watch these amazing people going to these remote spots trying to preserve dying species, you may feel a tiny tinge of meaningless in your own life...

And why should we preserve extremely rare animals that were here long before us - the sad Corporation with their greedy green eyes says(the many of them who are directly involved with or who have a definite interest in clearing land of all that troublesome "bush") - maybe just BECAUSE they were here long before us and we don't know what's going to happen if we continue to reduce our bio-diversity - O.K. MONEYMAN!!!???

WHY is this film supposed to be so bad?! (and the rating so low)
5 October 2012
I have an idea why : the title and the general genre of this film being 'Action', it has attracted that particular 'action-oriented' and maybe not so 'enlightened' crowd looking for a little, or a lot, of action, and instead what do they get? A Tony Scott curveball in the form of an engaging, often slow-moving (but thoroughly-interesting, if one can appreciate it) LOVE story - and the poor hooligan viewers are all thrown off, so since they can't begin to fathom the depth of emotions between a man and a woman that is touched on here, they resort to bad-mouthing a film they can't understand.

Well, you'd think that this film had enough violence to keep this kind of crowd happy (and it certainly does!), but then there's all that 'weird romance stuff' for quite awhile.

Oh well, guys - better stick to straight-forward 'shoot 'em up and mow 'em down ' - and stay away from those scary deeper emotions!

Sure, stop slavery in the South, enslave the Third World instead
23 September 2012
Some of the documentaries being made these days are so poignant - partly due no doubt to the easy availability of info through the internet - that I am being stunned repeatedly! This film states so many shocking facts in less than 2 hours it's almost too much to take in.

The sad thing is that most people in the west still have no idea what the U.S.-led World Bank and I.M.F. (and the corporations behind their decisions) are actually doing to poor Third World countries : the exploitation goes on as if we were still in the 1800's (witness the cotton-pickers in Africa) but now on a much, much larger scale.

If you want to know what is really going on in our age, WATCH this film.

this is one of those 'tough to watch' docs
7 September 2012
The reason being it just keeps hitting us with difficult situations in every environment it explores, where each time the situation looks pretty grim. If we are open to what the director is saying, and not just dismissing it all like some damn oil-man, we will have to admit that it IS a crying shame what our presence has really meant on this earth. This film deserves a considerably higher score than what it's been given. For its gritty nature I would definitely recommend this film to anyone concerned about the environment and our future here on the planet. At least we might last a little longer than some of those poor fish in the lakes...

true cult classic sticks in your mind
4 September 2012
Within any given year (in this case 1969), there are numerous films recommended by critics, some ARE interesting and well-done, others seem kind of dull and what I call 'overrated underrated'. But THIS is one of those scant few films within a given year that really sticks in my mind - one of the first that I would go to if you told me to watch something from that year. Because despite all the 'unsympathetic characters' and slow-moving pace, this film can grow on you if you let it, it can make you wonder if it were actually possible to let yourself go the way of the protagonist in this film, for despite all of our 'high ideals' there is always temptation - and in this case, strong, alluring temptation : once you let that girl get under your skin, it's a whole other ballgame! P.S. - not to mention, this film has one of the greatest, eclectic soundtracks ever made, some of my friends and myself consider various songs in this movie as our favourite Pink Floyd songs of all time!

Audrey Rose (1977)

reincarnation thriller, not a horror movie
30 August 2012
I found this film extremely enjoyable as it was so original with concepts about reincarnation way ahead of its time (1977), and I really don't know how it could have been shortened or sped up as suggested by some as it seemed all the necessary information was relayed to us as it only could have been, step by step - otherwise, it would have been confusing.

In short summary, a mysterious man seems to be stalking a seemingly happy family, until we begin to learn the family is not so happy, as the young daughter has frequent terrifying nightmares, and pretty soon the man watching her from afar, despite all prejudice from the father especially, becomes her saviour as he seems to comfort her during her traumatic episodes. There is even a court case later on - who would have thought of this in 1977, let alone today - concerning WHO the child really is! I won't say anymore....

I don't understand why this film has received such a low score here, even if the acting and directing are not top-notch, just the sheer originality makes up for whatever might be lacking. I believe we should cherish films like this that make an effort to step out of the ordinary, out of the mundane film world of car chases and bombs going off and inane conversations. This is a film that can make you think, if you let it - hey, maybe, this, or parts of this, are really true!
