Evening (2007)
Choose to LIVE
How can so much negativity surround this movie? I have found myself pondering it, long after I finished viewing it; which demonstrates to me that it is indeed worthy of watching.
True, there were some depressing scenes ... but I believe this was merely to show to the viewer the greater central theme. Too often we look at our life in retrospect, considering whether we have made the right or wrong choices, and chastising ourselves for whichever choice we make. There was a line in the movie whereby Anne, (superbly played by Claire Danes), says to Buddy after he asks her to ponder a life with him, "that it would not work for me." So here, she is presented with one admirer, whilst she pursues another; and basically, ends up with neither. She made a decision which would turn the events of her life in one way, be it good or bad, it was her life to live, and her mistakes to make ... but in essence, she did LIVE it.
Then there is the life of her daughter (professionally played by the very talented Toni Collette) who finds herself pregnant and too fearful to LIVE her life in fear of making any mistakes in doing so ... and her other daughter (played by Natasha Richardson), who has spent some time blaming her mother for her parenting choices. Ironically, she herself, as a mother is ready to acknowledge that in LIVING, you will make decisions for yourself and others which will either be right, or wrong but not to be fearful about doing so, for at the end, all that really matters is that you lived it, enjoyed it, and did so believing in yourself.
You cannot go back and change your life when you get to the end of it ... life can only be understood backwards, but lived forwards.
Too much is made of the romances she experienced in this movie. Anyone who watched this movie and believed it was about the romance has missed the point. If you want to explore the Buddy character, do so with the correct theme in mind. I believe he felt like he lacked the confidence to make his own decisions and do what his heart really wanted to do, which was admit to himself his own sexuality. He also made his choice ...
I truly believe the real issue was more to do with not being fearful of living our life the way we choose, our relationship with ourselves and our children, and not being regretful about where we arrive at for we are there BECAUSE of the choices we have made, and we need to believe in our right and ability to make the correct choices for ourselves, and then teach our children the knowledge and ethics and confidence to make their own right decisions.
I have to say that as a mother, and a daughter, I appreciate my a relationship with my own mother all the more for viewing this movie.
Once in a while a movie comes along which changes your viewpoint, and opens your eyes whilst it entertains. This is such a movie. Do yourself a favour ... watch it.
The Ferryman (2007)
Fab Film
Having watched heaps of horror films, I suppose I have become a little nonchalant about most. However, this one has inspired me to write a review.
I truly enjoyed this movie. The acting was probably 8/10 as a whole, and there were a few surprises, with some truly superb direction, and production. I particularly enjoyed the slow motion direction of one particular scene.
I enjoyed the humour, and I have to say, I loved the soundtrack. All in all, a film with some difference. Thumbs up! Congrats to a New Zealand flick, the best IMHO, since "Once Were Warriors."
