In the Electric Mist (2009)
Slavery never ended.
A film particularly underestimated in my opinion, more intelligent and poetic than it seems. We can blame him for being a little too classic and yet, it is in the discussions between Dave Robicheaux (Tommy Lee Jones) and General John Bell (Levon Helm) that it finds the heart of the film, as well as in the false appearances of cinema, in this discussion with a ghost.
Look for answers... When are we going to stop being cowards and stop exploiting each other? Let the thugs make their laws and use appearances and ignorance to enslave their environment.
Let us go back to the American sources of this fish that comes from our country. In these marshes, in this slump, where people do not dare to speak out of fear of reprisals. What must the righteous do to stop this? Power and money destroy everything, it gives power to the worst, Bertrand Tavernier reveals the detestable face of these false pretences in our society and does not spare the slave bosses but especially not the power that gives cinema.
It is through a magnificent John Goodman that the icing on the cake of exploitation and corruption all makes sense, how corruption closes the eyes and silence the mouths. Silence and letting it happen is the poison of our societies and our own exploitation.
Subtly these themes are treated on many levels, so it is a film to review on many points because yes, these thugs will also attack our children without a doubt and it is... That is already the case. Let us never forget our past, because the battlefield is never really conquered.
Django Unchained (2012)
Alexandre Dumas is black.
An evidence that many do not know yet, the cinema of Tarantino is obvious, No? And it is particularly essential in our time. Reservoir dogs takes care of fakes, Pulp Fiction takes care of thugs, Kill Bill of patriarchy, Inglorious Bastard of the Nazis, here is Django who takes care of white slavery.
We can love or hate Quentin, for his magnificence of cool attitude or his cinematic cultural remix... Quentin always makes a real film with a real subject, even if he has fun with it, he does it with exemplary respect and never forgets to treat his purpose with style and efficiency but without any ease.
Django is a bit his top, here he is who flourishes perfectly in the western or he can take his black identity (because Quentin feels like a black in his heart) and it is a guilty pleasure and so effective. He then uses all the weapons of his cinema to kill these white slave bastards, not without irony, by making a German the liberator and by blowing himself with dynamite.
A great Tarantino, for a great subject.
Zillion (2022)
Overexcited like his eccentric character!
After "Les Ardennes" that I liked very much at the time Robin Pront returns with Zillion, the incredible biopic on a nerd who plunges into the world of the night through a success story that will make little echo to those who loved "The wolf of wall street". I don't know the character, I don't know if it's faithful, but the film is really great.
Overexcited and overexcited like his eccentric character, welcome in the Belgium of the 90s, the film is a real blast that takes off at 100 per hour. Difficult to be bored, the characters are a treat, the story is hallucinating and the staging is very nice. The feeling that emerges for me is a real plunge into a world of madness, decadent, immoral, voyeur but so enjoyable.
The actors are very good, the light and the music are excellent, the editing is thundering, a beautiful surprise that certainly looks like a roller coaster and whose inevitable decadence is both tragic and pathetic, a story of friendship and opportunism, filled with characters as endearing as decadent. Like Boogie Night in a little less trash anyway, the trip is as terrible as exciting.
They Cloned Tyrone (2023)
A nice little B-movie
Netflix productions don't really make great Cinema productions, it's often the case for my taste. It's not just a question of budget, it's more a question of purpose, except to be the exception that confirms the rule "don't look up", «They cloned Tyrone» is not exempt from the rule.
It's a nice little B movie, to spend a good evening in front of Netflix, the casting is good, the game too, the plot this defends well and the subject is not so bad can be even, for lovers of fantasy/ science fiction, a little more original than the average.
Only here, it is above all a cool movie with certainly, some interesting topics like conspiracy, the exploitation of blacks by whites and the vision of a utopian/dystopian society at the same time but apart from the good time that we spend discovering the series of rebound very well conducted (because it is true because we are never bored), we quickly realize that the film hesitates (like Kiefer Sutherland in this scene in the middle of the film, which is definitely still found in the movies a little missed). The plot turns in circles even if it is a bit his concept, and very quickly, we do not know what he really tells. And it is not with its final that one almost thinks that there will be a continuation that the subject will gain in depth.
In fact, I was not expecting anything, I was rather hipped by the concept but finally apart from a good time, there is nothing really striking, it is a nice series B or John Boyega plays him very well and it is nice to see him outside «Star Wars», but I couldn't help but think: It's a shame with a second part less caricature, this film could have been very interesting. He surely had things to say, but in the end he takes no risk condemning him to be just...good entertainment.
Super Z (2021)
A French burger with the taste of series Z
French genre film productions are always a bit missed, I remember the latest "Ogre" that I often talked about as successful, personally I found that it was limit a disaster. In fact I find that when it tries to take it seriously it does not work, it lacks commitment (maybe finally be a glimmer of hope with the animal kingdom?). And now a friend brings me this American DVD on which there is a French Z-movie that is not available at home. So it's already whimsical, but then it was nothing compared to the movie.
Super Z is rather strange hamburger that makes you want on the box, and who wants to be square to put runs. In general my love story with fast food ends there. Yet here, I enjoyed the end even if it is necessary to hold certain phases to the raze of daisies, but well, it is a great series z as it is written in the title and the top, we do not contradict it. It's insane, cheap at times but extremely enjoyable and fun if you appreciate the genre. So yes it is not a great film but it is not so bad: There are unbearable sides in stupidity and formidable blow of brightness rather unexpected any proportion kept that said.
It is a French experience in the field and it is quite fresh, original and trash. I will not be able to advise everyone but personally I had a really good time because Super Z never really takes it seriously and the film is very generous in its stupidity (it is even a concentrate). For fans of the broken genre, it is a little unknown pearl.
Samaritan (2022)
A nice little Sunday afternoon movie.
I will be very clear with you, superhero movies have never really fascinated me, I appreciate however those that are real movie rather than those that try to embody the cool attitude of absurd adventures of a tasteless saga, yes Marvel I'm talking about you. To give you an example, I like Superman by Donner, Burton's Batmans, Singer's X-men, James Mangold's Wolfverine, Nolan's The Dark Knight or Todd Phillips' Joker. For me these are real films, much stronger than anything offered by the fast food Marvel (which I have seen, in quazi entirety to make me a real opinion). Only one film stands out and if I had to save only one, it is the guardians of the galaxy who offer themselves with James Gunn, a nice ride with magnificent losers, not without cause, in a totally cool attitude: Miracles are achieved if we go beyond our differences.
Here are the main lines, it will guide you to be better on my vision of the Samaritan. So what is it worth? It's not bad but not crazy, better than what Marvel does for sure, because I found that there was a real treatment of the characters and especially the story through the evolution of each of the characters. It is also not crazy that said, but it is generally well done, the film offers a twist that even if it is little missed admit it in its form it remains nevertheless very effective. Either the film clearly has inspirations close to Robocop 2 (which I like personally) for its universe where children are faced with moral and ethical choices very difficult because of the misery of their daily lives.
The film is aimed more at children and young teenagers and conveys rather healthy values, even very noble. We can feel Sylvester Stallone's dough in this story and even if it is far from being a masterpiece, he nevertheless managed to convey his founding message, while dealing with the terrible duality that imposes our society on our vision of good and evil face in particular, to poverty and integration. Appearances are misleading children, never lost sight of this aspect. In short a nice Sunday afternoon film, certainly less spectacular than a Marvel, but much closer to a real film for young people with good convictions, which ultimately conveys a beautiful message: even a monster can find redemption.
Nope (2022)
A small side Jaws very nice
I wait for each film with a certain impatience to such an extent that it is able to bypass the ideas received to plunge us into an original story with well-known yet well-known codes.
Once again, the plot is surprising, the homage to the cinema obvious, in a mix well snappy in appearance: western and fantastic. All in our contemporary time is however well tied, with a small side teeth of the sea very pleasant. Here man is the animal are closely linked in a cocktail of characters very endearing and perfectly interpreted. I had no idea what I was going to see while watching Nope, like the characters and their discovery but I admit that it was really a good surprise.
As always with this director, it's original and the plot is very well conducted from beginning to end. Special mention to the scene of the really chilling chimpanzee, who will mark more than one spectator and tell a lot about our drift in the exploitation of life.
De uskyldige (2021)
A disturbing strangeness
A young couple with two very young girls move into a new building in a suburban dormitory. The oldest of the girls: Anna, is a mentally handicapped woman who demands permanent attention, thus monopolizing the parents who want to do the best. The discomfort is daily, irresolvable for them, how to understand a child who does not react to the code of our society. In front of this show, Ida, the youngest despair of this lack of attention and no longer knows, by force, whether she should love or hate her sister. The young girl then wanders in the middle of the buildings and kindergartens to try to make new friends and get out of this anxious climate to sort of leave zero.
Very quickly the miniature society of children describes the difficulties of appearances, of forming bonds and facing problems so great for their little shoulders. And as we shift into the fantastic, all themes of innocence are treated with a palpable reality. If the film offers a remarkable first degree, it reflects a phenomenon of already visible society: Our children are prey to greater responsibilities than the previous generation. The symbolism of the powers is a real parallel with this new evolution of their increasingly acerbic sensitivity. It is through their children's games that all the stakes take shape: fear, death, already felle innocence by opening the doors of good and evil. Together they chart their paths and experience this new world with the spectator as the only witness. These children have a courage that already makes them much more adult than their own parents. Their unsuspected abilities resonate with the responsibilities that flow from them, contrasting with blind adults trapped in a world of disappearing voices. Together the children protect their parents and move the necessary lines before it is too late.
In many respects, The innocents is a real jewel in my eyes, the direction of the actors is incredible, the supernatural atmosphere, the exciting staging, The technique is at the service of a narrative that constantly touches the summits of a worrying and visible strangeness or everything is upside down. In short, even if Titane won the gold in Cannes that year and it also reveals very interesting and more visceral, I personally preferred this one.
