The Blackening (2022)
I thought this was hilarious.
I honestly don't get the bad reviews. The cast does a great job playing off each other. The premise is somewhat silly and uses stereotypes as the platform for delivery. But I honestly haven't laughed this much in a comedy for a good 10 years. Perhaps the bad reviews are why comedic films have been abandoned by Hollywood. Sure, this movie may vome across as dated in 15 years. But right now, to me, this is a funny and original idea that I enjoyed immensely.
Great job to the cast and crew, and I hope to see a sequel. F#@$ the people who don't get it. A24 doesn't give a crap if people don't get it. Why should you?
American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders (2024)
Don't waste your time
Two individuals with a camera pretend tp be journalists by retracing the steps of a previous journalist. Once there are no steps to retrace, our two attention needing film makers basically stop pursuing any open leads and give up on the story.
They use music to make you think they have a credible witness/lead that might lead you deeper into the story only to call that individual crazy in the last 15 minutes of the final episode.
The only thing you will walk away from this documentary asking yourself is what the motivation of the two filmmakers really was. I feel they were more interested in trying to make themselves the story.
Benny Loves You (2019)
Unpolished gem
This 8 is based off the fact that this movie was made for under $100K... by passionate horror buffs. The acting is terrible, and even the fake blood seems like it was made from an experimental recipe found on the internet. But I don't care. Because a plush toy runs around killing things in its path. My only hope is that the writer/director/editor/lead actor of this film has earned enough recognition to finance his next story with a few more bucks. He's the Kevin Smith of horror. Humorous. Bloody. Dumb. Smart. I think there is a market for movies like this and Psycho Goreman that tap into 80s kids who want a good chuckle during a slasher flick.
Renfield (2023)
Was almost a B
A fun and silly film that starts on a path to being a solid B Movie. That is until Awkwafina opens her mouth and tries acting again. I've never seen an actor that has no idea what to do with her hands as much as Awkwafina. Or her eyes.
The movie has lots of funny moments. It also does not care about reality and taps in on recycled plot points to carry the original storyline of making Refield the hero. But even when the entire police department openly working with the mob is 100× more realistic than Awkwafina "acting" like she's going to faint while standing up from a couch.
That and Nick Cage is hilarious.
The Thing (2011)
Garbage Pail Kid version of John Carpenter classic
One positive thing I took away from this TERRIBLE remake was that I will never have to commit Matthijs von Whatever's name to memory because Hollywood will never give him another shot like this at directing a potential blockbuster again.
It is painful to see a film use vastly superior special effects to make a lazy version of the original. The best way I can describe this film is that it is a lot like seeing Carlos Mencia do stand up, where he takes other comedians good jokes, and tells a bad version of that stolen material. The only person who probably liked this film was Kurt Russell because he stars is in the good version.
Heartbeeps (1981)
Awful. Shameful.
I challenged myself to make it to the end. And my conclusion is that there is nothing at all good about this movie, and probably the reason Randy Quaid has lost his marbles. Being part of this movie took his sanity.
This is not even the sort of dumb sci fy that MDT3K could enjoy ripping on. I gave it an extra star for the makeup and the fact that Jerry Garcia plays the baby robot.
This movie is so bad that it makes me questionif Andy Kaufman was actually a comic genius, or and idiot who fooled the world into thinking he was smart. I think if you consider AK as some sort of "brilliant, misunderstood comic genius ". Force yourself to watch this film. The entire thing. Then ask yourself if anyone with a brain was involved in this pile of cinematic s***. Anyone involved in the making of this film should be put in jail.
Westworld (1973)
James Cameron copied this movie...
I will start by saying that Arnold Schwarzeneggerwoukd not have become governor of California had 1973 Westworld not been made.
Let me clarify... I never realized that Yul Brynner was the original Terminator. James Cameron 100% took this movie and made his own version called The Terminator. Down to the view.point of the robot with the bad digitized special effect. So had Westworld not been made, James Cameron would have had nothing to steal. Thus, Arnold having no Terminator campaign slogans and no chance of running for governor.
But as for this movie, Yule Brynner really rocks the house. He's the original Terminator, only with no Terminator to emulate. Yul never really impressed me until seeing him in this movie.
Even though the effects and styling are a bit dated, the story moves along and kept me engaged. A true sci fy classic.
The Menu (2022)
Great Fun
I loved everything about this movie. The acting, the characters, the dialog, the editing... it was a tight movie that made you root for "bad guys".
This move had some fun dark humor. Not bland simpleton Midwest humor that made Jay Leno and Jeff Dunham lots of money. Like that sort of rudimentary 5 year old humor that needs a laugh track to be completely sure they are laughing at the right time in the story because they are not ev en sure they w ere supposed to laugh or not. No.
It's not a horror. It has a few slightly graphic moments, but you don't mind because the characters dining are so terrible.
Loved the ending. It makes the whole movie.
