65 (2023)
4 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Co-written and co-directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods who conceived the script for the largely successful film, 'A Quiet Place.' Collaborate on a futuristic tale about a pilot, portrayed by Adam Driver, who is assigned to transport passengers on a space expedition. Yet crash lands onto an unknown planet during an asteroid collision and discovers that he is 65 million years into prehistoric history when the dinosaurs once reigned on Earth. Initially intrigued with the premise, I was curious to see where the direction would go for this concept about past meeting future. But the film ultimately disappointments as the execution turns out to be very by-the-numbers with no twists or surprises.

There were moments of potential as the airman discovers a lone survivor within the ruins of his cargo. A young girl portrayed by Ariana Greenblatt, who becomes a potential daughter figure to him with the audience curious to see their burgeoning relationship whilst they struggle to survive. But this is squandered as their characters are under-developed. Causing their bond to feel artificial rather than genuine as their relationship isn't fully fleshed out in the writing department. Thus lowering the stakes as the viewer has no concern for their well-being throughout their journey.

65 is a decent pastime but will be marked down as a missed opportunity. There are endless possibilities on the direction that this feature could have taken to make it a more vibrant and fascinating adventure. But the passion was non-existent during this project. This film is a hollow shell riddled with plot-holes and plot-contrivances that only tones down the experience.

Flex x Cop (2024)

Flex x Cop (2024)
30 March 2024
Based on a format created by Sreda production company and a remake of the Russian television-series, 'Silver Spoon.' Flex x Cop is a South Korean adaption which follows an immature third-generation chaebol named Jin Isoo (Ahn Bo-hyun) who spends his evenings having fun and living without a cause. When he is falsely convicted for a felony that he did not commit by the team leader of the violent crime division, Lee Gang-hyun (Park Ji-hyun). The police department works to make amends by stationing him as a police detective. Jin Isoo is berated by his colleagues for having a privileged background yet he ultimately proves his competency once he utilizes his intellect and his resources towards solving investigations.

Ahn Bo-hyun was the perfect choice to anchor this series as the leading man. His portrayal as Jin Isoo carries this season with much needed charisma since the narrative structure is quite clichéd and predictable in certain areas. Although, the comedic delivery is well executed as there are numerous laugh-out-loud moments that keep the viewer entertained and the minimal action sequences are sharply choreographed infused with sleek editing. The character-development is lacking which is why I didn't feel as attached to the characters as I should have in the beginning. But all of the performances from the supporting cast members manage to uplift the roles that they are given and make them their own. Particularly Kwak Siyang as Jin Seung-ju, who is a shoulder to lean on as the older sibling of the family. Sharing solid on-screen chemistry with Ahn Bo-hyun.

The "whodunit" cases keep the viewer engaged on who the culprit may be throughout the entirety of the season and this provides the audience with much to look forward to in the second season since director Kim Jae-hong and writer Kim Ba-da will be returning.

Tokyo Vice (2022– )

Tokyo Vice (2022)
25 March 2024
Based on the memoir 'Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan' written by Jake Adelstein; who serves as executive-producer. Tokyo Vice is a neo-noir television-series which follows Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) who becomes the first non-Japanese reporter for one of the most largest newspapers in Japan, the Meicho Shimbun. Adelstein is taken under the wing of seasoned detective Katagiri (Ken Watanabe) as they unravel a sinister scheme involving a loan company that buries their clients with insurmountable debt. Suspecting to have ties to the leader of the Tozawa yakuza clan, Shinzo Tozawa (Ayumi Tanida) who has plans to establish himself in Tokyo by conquering rival clan territories.

The pacing is deliberately slow as we are introduced to the various personalities who abide in this country. The audience learns about their aspirations as we witness focal characters struggle in their day-to-day lives such as Sato (Show Kasamatsu) a conflicted Yazuka member of the Chihara-kai clan. Samantha (Rachel Keller) a club hostess with a mysterious past and Maruyama (Rinko Kikucho) a supervisor at the Meicho Shimbun who has problems in her own household. The portrayals feel authentic and contribute to the grounded atmosphere. The pristine color grading with the competently shot cinematography of the nightlife in Tokyo give this series it's own stylistic flair.

The season concludes with a cliffhanger that may feel disappointing to viewers since all of the plot-lines that were introduced remain unresolved by the finale. But I believe the second season will serve as a fulfilling companion piece and we will receive all of the answers to the questions that have been raised.

Tenet (2020)

Tenet Reissue (2024)
1 March 2024
Christopher Nolan serves as director, writer and co-producer with his creative partner and wife Emma Thomas whom have collaborated on 'The Dark Knight Trilogy', 'Inception', 'Interstellar', 'The Prestige' and 'Dunkirk.'

Conceiving the ideas for Tenet over the course of twenty years. Christopher Nolan has molded one of the most unique films I have ever seen about a secret agent, The Protagonist (John David Washington) who is assigned to prevent a third world war. Talent flows in the family with the son of two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington, delivering a satisfactory portrayal of a man who is determined to accomplish his objective by any means necessary. Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki are amongst the supporting cast members. Delivering charismatic performances as Neil and Katherine who assist our titular character on his mission towards preventing a global threat. Ludwig Göransson provides a masterful score that is a symphony for the ears and the stunt co-ordination by Jackson Spidell is mind-blowing as we witness out-of-this-world backward and forward action sequences.

Despite the amount of praise I've given this release, the undermining flaws lie within the choppy sound mixing. The over-powering soundtrack muddles the dialogue in various scenes. This can cause a disconnect with the audience since Tenet is already complex and convoluted in the narrative's concepts of backwards moving entropy, non-linear thinking and temporal paradoxes that it would require multiple viewings with close captioning to completely comprehend what is occurring onscreen.

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract (2023)
15 February 2024
Based on the web-comic of the same name written by Angelique and Kim Neo-ul. Park Yeon-woo (Lee Se-young) is a rebellious noblewoman living in the Confucian Joseon era whom is arranged to wed Kang Tae-ha (Bae In-hyuk). When she is kidnapped and thrown into a well following his death, Park Yeon-woo discovers that she has transported 200 years in time to where she comes across an identical version of her deceased husband. Park Yeon-woo heeds this second chance to rekindle a relationship with the man she loves and adapts to this modern setting. While uncovering the mystery as to why she was sent to this time-period.

The series has made a home in my heart due to the all of the astonishing performances from the cast members. Lee Se-young was the perfect choice for the female lead. Deserving all of the recognition as she seamlessly portrays a fish-out-of-water who utilizes all her skills towards making an impact on those around her. Especially on the cold-and-calculated amalgamation of Kang Tae-ha (Bae In-hyuk) who she shares noteworthy onscreen chemistry with.

This drama was truly an enjoyable experience. Containing likable characters whom the viewer becomes invested in as we root for them to have the happy endings they deserve. Twists-and-turns catch the viewer by surprise when we believe we have everything figured out. Whilst certain plot-holes and plot-points remain unresolved and left to the interpretation of the audience. The script could have been more polished. But the ambiguity is welcomed as it fits within the storyline. The finale concludes on an emotional note which leaves a lasting imprint on the viewer. I would love to see a continuation for these characters that we have grown attached to because it's difficult to say goodbye. I believe this season is deserving of a rewatch as I'll revisit Yeon-woo's unforgettable journey towards self-fulfillment.

Dragons of Wonderhatch (2023)
8 February 2024
Dragons of Wonderhatch is a Japanese series that blends animation and live-action into a fascinating tale about a teenager named Nagi (Sena Nakajima) who has always felt disconnected from the world and has visions of another universe within her dreams where fishes swim through the air and islands float in the sky.

The delicious world-building from writers Kyohta Fujimoto, Takamasa Oe and Anna Kawahara is captivating as we are exposed to the animated alternate land of Upananata, it's inhabitants communicate in their own dialect and dragon riders are the protectors of the people. When their civilization is on the verge of collapse, they uncover a portal to planet earth. In hopes of discovering a solution and saving the place they call home. Dragons of Wonderhatch is one of the most original stories that I have ever seen and it's no surprise that a second season will be on the way since the storytelling is too ambitious to not have it's own franchise. The characters are very likable, the action sequences are superbly choreographed and the CGI is some of the best that I have witnessed in a television-show. Although, the script can be rough around the edges. The lore should have been more properly established in the pilot episode. Various concepts are not fully explained so confusion can make-or-break audiences once you are introducing them to a new universe. For those who still want to be immersed in a breath-taking experience, I believe it's worth overlooking since the narrative does become easier to comprehend as we progress. However, the conclusion for the season is bound to be divisive amongst viewers since it feels completely rushed with many unanswered questions that remain unresolved. Leaving events on a cliffhanger that only serve as detrimental to this season, with an otherwise magical storyline.

Welcome to Samdalri (2023– )

Welcome to Samdal-ri (2023)
2 February 2024
Welcome to Samdal-ri is a South Korean television-series which centers on the lives of two childhood friends who became lovers, Cho Yong-pil (Ji Chang-wook) and Cho Sam-dal (Shin Hye-sun) in their small town of Samdal-ri located on Jeju Island.

Dreaming of making a name for herself, Cho Sam-dal moves to the mainland to pursue her aspirations. We witness the hard work and dedication that comes with achieving one's goals as she eventually opens her own company and becomes a photographer for renowned celebrities. But she has been in a series of unfulfilling relationships since she separated from Cho Yong-pil and has lost contact with the loved ones from her hometown due to becoming work-focused.

When she is involved in a scandal that tarnishes her career, Sam-dal returns to the town she grew up in. She rekindles her relationship with her family and friends and crosses paths with the man that she has once loved. Welcome to Samdal-ri is a wonderful slice-of-life drama that reassures the audience that when we believe we've lost everything. The people who care about us will always be there to have our backs and motivate us when we need them most. Despite most of the narrative's predictability and excessive melodrama, this was an entire experience that was worthwhile. It's slow pacing breathes life into all of the characters who abide in Samdal-ri and conveys a heartfelt message that a proper support system is all we need to heal from the traumas we've faced in life. Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hye-sun were the perfect choice to lead this drama and I commend the casting director for bringing these two together to deliver incredible performances for the audience.

The season concludes with one of the most beautiful finales that we could have ever dreamed of. Reminding us to hold onto our loved ones and clasp onto our dreams. Everything is going to be alright in this rollercoaster we call life.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum
31 January 2024
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) has become excommunicated from the fold and the bounty placed on his head has gone international after breaking the rules of the High Table. Hunted by assassins all around the globe. John seeks to find a resolution as he dreams of reverting back to the life he lived when he was with his deceased wife.

Consequences for one's actions is the common theme of this film as we are given a glimpse of how the High Table rules with an iron fist. Through the Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon). This is an entity who is tasked with judging all those who have aided John Wick on his path of retribution against Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio) and will deliver repercussions to any individual who fails to know their place.

Despite being the weakest entry of the franchise with the plot being paper thin. Chapter 3 is easy-to-follow for newcomers who haven't watched the previous films and has much to offer long awaiting fans. Expanding on the lore of our beloved main character with his true name and origins of how he came to be, unveiled. Under the guidance of The Director (Angelica Huston).

The director of photography Dan Laustsen has molded the most visually impressive chapter to date as the combination of color grading, nightlife and camera work on the action sequences which are expertly choreographed by Jonathan Eusebio are truly a sight to gaze upon. The significance of the title revealed as Parabellum stands for "War" with John Wick fighting onslaught waves of enemies throughout the duration of the runtime. Leading this to be the most action-oriented chapter of them all. This may feel like filler to some viewers who were expecting a conclusion for the franchise. But this sets up John Wick's eventual confrontation with the High Table quite well and is bound to be a cinematic feast for action junkies.

Ballerina (2023)
28 January 2024
Based on real-life sexual exploitation cases, and written and directed by Lee Chung-hyun who collaborated with Jeon Jong-seo on her second feature, 'The Call.' Weaves a vengeance tale about a former bodyguard who sets out to fulfill her bestfriend's dying wish towards punishing those who wronged her.

Jeon Jong-seo delivers a fabulous portrayal as the hardened Jang Ok-ju. Whose fondest memories lie with the deceased ballerina Choi Min-hee portrayed by Park Yu-rim, revealed through a series of flashbacks. The development of their relationship is believable due to the sound chemistry these two actresses have onscreen and it applies much needed weight to the narrative. Once the audience discovers that Choi Min-hee's death is linked to a human sex-trafficking ring orchestrated by Choi Pro portrayed by Kim Ji-hoon, who has moments of shine and supplements well as the gangster who thrives off the oppression of his victims. This is fuel for Jang Ok-ju's mission of bloody retribution which involves sleek action sequences combined with quick editing cuts, artistic camera angles and incredible stunt choreography performed by Jeon Jong-seo herself that only intensifies the experience.

'Ballerina' is cinematically stylish with delicious cinematography and a booming soundtrack composed by Gray (in his debut as music director) which compliments a storyline that is not as refined and manages to generate it's own unique vibe.

My Demon (2023–2024)

My Demon (2023)
25 January 2024
Jeong Gu-won (Song Kang) is a merciless demon who has roamed the planet for two-hundred years. Forming contract deals with the inhabitants of earth to provide worldly benefits in exchange for their souls. The source of his power stems from a tattooed cross located on his wrist. When an incident occurs, the tattoo is transferred to an icy heiress of a conglomerate, Do Do-hee (Kim Yoo-jung) whom he butts head with. They are forced to settle their differences. Ultimately discovering the common ground amongst each other. Song Kang is the reason I was intrigued to tune into this series. He is one of my favorite actors from South Korea. Yet Jeong Gu-won is a very handsome and cunning character that is anchored by a wooden performance from it's leading man. This was one of his weakest on-screen portrayals and the lack of chemistry with Kim Yoo-jung did not support an otherwise well-crafted storyline. I felt Kim Yoo-jung resonated more with Kim Hae-sook in their mother and daughter relationship. I would have loved to see more screen-time between them because their charisma was radiating.

What truly reeled me in this series was the fascinating lore behind demonology. Human beings have formed blood pacts with demons over the centuries to accumulate worldly gain and demons have originally lived amongst human beings to protect them as their guardians. With viewers witnessing Jeong Gu-won accomplish his full purpose as a protector once he and Do Do-hee grow to love one another. My Demon is a slow burner that becomes fulfilling for those who are patient. The narrative may be formulaic and the overindulgent product placement is laughable. But there is much to appreciate such as the gorgeous imagery from the director of photography, the passionate scriptwriting from Cho Ah-Il who serves delicious character-development and the series concluding in a satisfying manner that is quite endearing for the audience.

A Murder at the End of the World (2023)
23 January 2024
A Murder at the End of the World was written, executive-produced and directed by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij in their second television production following the cancelled Netflix series, 'THE OA.' Inspired by their interests in stories about amateur sleuths and young female detectives. Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) is the amalgamation of an amateur detective and a novel writer who is invited on a private retreat with eight other ambitious minds. By one of the wealthiest men in the world, Andy Ronson (Clive Owen) in hopes of collaborating and creating a better future for the population.

But the getaway turns out to be the last location anyone would like to be in when one of the guests is murdered. Darby Hart uses the skills she knows best towards uncovering the truth and apprehending the suspect before they can prey on their next victim in this well rounded, whodunit. With her backstory revealed through a series of flashbacks that surround an unsolved case and a burgeoning romance between her former lover, Bill. These events play an integral part on how she came to be. Emma Corrin is admirable in the leading role. Reminiscent of a young Lizbeth Salander from 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' film series. The show is a slow-burn that demands patience from the audience as we dissect each of the guests. Some of the creative decisions are questionable which require a level of suspension of disbelief. But it doesn't completely break our immersion as we are invested in Darby Hart's pursuit. However, when we reach the finale the reveal is bound to divide fans of the mini-series. I was personally disappointed with the outcome that we received because the deaths now feel coincidental rather than personal. The intensity behind the motivation of the murders is diminished and the case is closed on an unsatisfactory note. A missed opportunity.

Master's Daughter (2022)
23 January 2024
"If even a single person believes your lie, it becomes the truth and the real truth slowly disappears into the darkness." - Sara Kiritani

Master's Daughter is a Japanese mini-series which centers on a beautiful young woman named Sara Kiritani (Mizuki Kayashima) who is a new transfer student at the same high school as fraternal twins, Kazuma Yuda (Taiyu Fujiwara) and Ichika Yuda (Hana Toyoshima). Kiritani ultimately earns their trust as she assists them through the difficulties they face within their high school.

The siblings soon realize that strange occurrences have begun to surface around them due to Kiritani's presence and the search for the truth behind her identity ensues. Kayashima is riveting as the main character with a mysterious past, and Fujiwara compliments her portrayal with naivety and boyish charm that signifies the innocence of youth. Planting the audience in his shoes as we are unable to distinguish the truth from falsehood in this twisted psychological tale about the art of deception. The series manages to shed light on serious topics such as bullying, blackmail, pedophilia and defamation of character which can all lead to dire consequences. An underrated gem containing countless twists-and-turns that have the audience on the edge of their seat during the seven episodes of this show. Unable to predict where the narrative will lead due to the fabulous directing by Kô Kanai, who provides answers for all of the plotlines introduced and mends them together in a satisfying fashion for the conclusion. Master's Daughter holds a lasting impact on the viewer and this is the reasoning behind why it has become one of my favorite stories released in 2022.

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
31 December 2023
Kora (Sofia Boutella) is a former soldier who has adhered to a new life with a community of peaceful villagers. When their tranquility is threatened by the most ruthless military regime in the galaxy, the Motherworld. Kora rallies warriors from other planets and starts her own revolution in this space opera co-written, directed and produced by Zack Snyder.

Zack Snyder has openly stated this franchise will be his version of "Star Wars" and I believe it does have potential for growth as there are ambitious creative decisions behind the screenplay such as the world-building and the established lore which I would have loved to see fleshed out. The universe has started out on the wrong footing due to the storyline feeling very derivative and the overlong runtime that does not justify the thinly veiled narrative surrounding revenge. The CGI and VFX are top-notch for a Netflix production as we are exposed to various new planets, with insight on the intricate character designs of the creatures that populate them. But this universe rings hollow due to all of the characters being under-developed and their motivations feeling contrived. This is why it does not seem like an organic transition when the rebels form a camaraderie. Their chemistry is nonexistent. Not to mention, many of the cast members deliver wooden performances which only concludes that the direction was not as sharp. The redeeming qualities lie in the cinematography which can be visually enchanting in certain scenes and the action sequences that are minimal yet remain engrossing including the slow-motion shots.

One can hope that the issues mentioned will be improved upon in the sequel. Slated to release next year. But I will be keeping my expectations at a minimum.

Kill Boksoon (2023)
31 December 2023
Gil Bok-soon (Jeon Do-yeon) is an illustrious assassin who works for MK Enterprises. The largest contract-killing agency in the country run by Chairman Cha Min-kyu (Sol Kyung-gu) who has established three strict rules. Don't kill minors, don't take jobs from other agencies and always finish the kill.

Jeon Do-yeon showcases versatility in her portrayal as a single mother who is proficient in the art of death. Yet bears a complicated kinship with her teenage daughter, Gil Jae-young (Kim Si-ah) as she struggles to maintain their strained relationship within this rather familiar tale written and directed by Byun Sung-hyun. The scenes involving her attempts at connecting with her daughter were the most appealing. But they lacked the emotional weight due to the underdevelopment of the characters. The runtime would have benefitted from more heart-to-heart moments. Focusing on their relationship about acceptance. Whilst specific scenes in the second act could have been trimmed down as it caused issues with pacing.

The action sequences are bloody and enticing with Jeon Do-yeon performing all of her stunt choreography. She found them to be "challenging" as a 50-year-old actress but this only proved how dedicated she was to the role. This has to be the year of Jeon Do-yeon as she released another critical success, 'Crash Course in Romance.' A thoroughly entertaining drama that I would recommend.

In summation, 'Kill Boksoon' is worth a viewing despite the elongated runtime and absence of emotion. Jeon Do-yeon's star power, the dark humor, the world-building and the cinematography which captures the intensity of the fight segments supplement for its deficiencies.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
11 June 2023
Keanu Reeves delivers another electrifying portrayal in his second outing as the legendary hitman, John Wick. Opening with a bombastic driving sequence that is bound to please fans of the action genre. John Wick seeks to reclaim a cherished possession and then put his former life to rest as he was merely visiting the underworld to accomplish everything he needed to do to avenge his loved ones. But actions do not come without repercussions as he is once again forced out of retirement into the life that he desperately seeks to put to rest due to the re-emergence of a blood debt that must be paid. This has to be my favorite chapter out of the trilogy since the world-building is vastly larger and expanded upon with Continentals existing in other countries outside of New York. John Wick receives an upgrade with new body army and an arsenal of weaponry from his associates. Providing the viewer with insight on how members of the fold protect themselves at all times. The stunt choreography with expertly guided action sequences by stunt coordinator J. J. Perry and director Chad Stahelski is simply eye-opening and the best that I have seen in a franchise. Especially when the assassin's world famous pencil trick is finally revealed to the audience. The reunion between Reeves and Fishburne, who are common enemies in this feature are accompanied with a back-and-forth exchange that is both amusing and entertaining as the duo last worked with each other on the Matrix trilogy. The stakes in the sequel have increased tremendously with our titular character being double-crossed and hunted by various hitmen on the streets of New York City. The venture concludes with an unforgettable sequence of iconic dialogue spewed from Mr. Wick. Declaring himself as a one man army who will tear anyone down that stumbles his path. With an unforeseen future that leads right to the next film. Audiences garner much anticipation for what is to come.

John Wick (2014)

John Wick (2014)
2 June 2023
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is a widower who receives a final parting gift from his recently deceased wife. A companion in a form of a puppy who he was informed to cherish as he grieves alone. Coincidentally crossing paths with three sadistic men who threaten to tear down his world. John reverts back to the previous life that he dutifully tried to leave behind in order to begin anew. Carefully unveiled to be the most ruthless assassin to have ever lived known as Baba Yaga, The Boogeyman. John seeks to settle the score with the memory of his loved one as fuel to the fire.

Despite the familiar premise, John Wick is more than just an average vengeance tale. The focus is centered on a broken individual who desperately wants to hold onto what is most valuable to him. Dos vidanya, to anyone who tries to take what does not rightfully belong to them. Keanu Reeves gives a tour-de-force performance as the titular character. Encapsulating all of the emotional drive and vulnerability of a man who simply has nothing to lose. Quite unfortunate that Reeves' career was on a nose-drive before his initiation into the franchise. This film not only revitalized his career but showcases his talent as Reeves' had performed 95% of his own stunts for the outstanding action sequences in the film. Making the character his own that is now adored by fans of the action genre. John Wick is a powerhouse introduction for what has been deemed as one of the greatest action-oriented franchises of all time. The lore is simply fascinating as there is another world going on that is invisible to the naked eye with all members using a unique transaction system, bearing tattoos and assassinating for hire. Abiding by certain rules that must never be crossed. The sound design including the tracks "Killing Strangers" by Marilyn Manson, "Think by Kaleida", and "Who You Talkin' to Man?" by Ciscandra Nostalghia, set the atmosphere in this tale about a stylistic dark underworld.

Love and Leashes (2022)
2 April 2023
Based on the web-comic 'Moral Sense' written by Gyeoul. Seohyun and Lee Jun-young are paired in this delightful feature about a young man, Jihoo, who has BDSM desires and a co-worker, Jiwoo, who discovers his secret and contractually becomes his master over a three-month period. Intrigued by the premise. I was open to exploring this storyline when I had the opportunity and I personally was not disappointed with the outcome as my expectations were exceeded. The amount of chemistry the duo had on-screen was my favorite aspect of the film as the dominant and submissive role playing performed by Seohyun and Lee Jun-young was not only convincing but thoroughly entertaining to watch. The audience can tell the cast members were having a blast through their performances. BDSM is showcased in a positive light and perfectly explained throughout the duration of the film. Specifically the relationship between dom and sub, warning viewers about predators and fake BDSMers, all without the use of nudity or explicit scenes. Making the concept educational and easy-to-follow for those who aren't familiar with a topic that is considered "taboo" amongst our society. The overall message that I gained from this release is that we will all have interests that will be controversial to others. At the end of the day, we are all human. Rather than demonizing someone for their differences. It's important to accept each other as we, which will ultimately help people accept themselves. This was a beautiful message conveyed to the viewer. Love and Leashes has to be one of my favorite romance stories of 2022 due to the amount of charm that it contains. With exceptional comedic-timing that makes the audience laugh-out-loud during scenes because of the precarious situations Jihoo and Jiwoo find themselves in. One of the sexiest films that we have received in quite some time. A guilty pleasure of mine.

The Glory (2022)
3 March 2023
"There will be no forgiveness, and so... there will be no glory either." - Moon Dong-eun

The Glory is a South Korean television-series written and executive produced by Kim Eun-sook, who molds a harrowing tale about a disfigured victim of high school violence who carefully plots her revenge against those that have wronged her. Song Hye-kyo delivers a commendable leading performance as the scorned woman, Moon Dong-eun, who has cashed in all her chips toward this path of no return. Ahn Gil-ho provides a masterful direction for the series. Allowing the viewer to take a backseat to this grand scheme orchestrated by Dong-eun. Narrating every step of her growth to the leader of the oppressive group, Park Yeon-jin (Lim Ji-yeon) whom I must share was the perfect choice to portray an apathetic villainess. The casting for this series is impeccable as the performers handle their roles seamlessly. The storyline provides a valuable lesson to the audience on how you reap what you sow. Be weary of your actions and whom they may affect because everything in life has a price. The series contains social commentary on the upper class abusing their power and how they are able to evade heinous crimes such as human humiliation and abuse, tying into the severity of school bullying within South Korea. Showcasing very gruesome and grotesque scenes which are not for the faint of heart.

The series' weakness lies within it's predictability as the viewer can already tell how this storyline is going to end. The theme feels familiar to other popular revenge stories such as 'Lady Vengeance' and the 'Kill Bill' duo-logy. But I believe the narrative is truly about the journey rather than the destination and this certainly has been a memorable experience as I unapologetically binge-watched the season in two days. I am looking forward to the release of Part 2 with the conclusion of this potently written drama.

Plane (2023)

Gerard Butler is captain of the cockpit and co-producer in this white-knuckle actioner about a crew that crash land on a remote isle in the Philippines. Discovering it's been ruled by heavily armed anti-government militants who hold civilians hostage for ransom. Commercial pilot Brodie Torrance leads a routine mission off the island with all the help he can acquire. Including the backing of convicted felon, Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter). Capturing the essence of old-school 1990's action flicks that paved the way for the genre. This release brings all of the nostalgia to the force-front involving pulse pounding set-pieces and thrill inducing moments that leave quite an impression with audiences. Director Jean François-Richet, who isn't a stranger to the genre with violent films such as 'Blood Father' and the 2005 reboot of 'Assault on Precinct 13' delivers exactly what was promised. Disregard the underdeveloped characters and the clichéd storyline. What you'll merely be left with is an entertainer. Gerard Butler continues to hold the banner as an action star in this race-against-time scenario. An honorable protagonist who would selflessly put his life on the line for his passengers, so they may be able to see their loved ones again. This was one of the most rewarding moments of the film. Mike Colter's role doesn't hold much significance other than serving as a second gunman to Butler's character. Rendering the inmate subplot pointless until the third act. Although, I must share was a exhilarating and blustering set-piece to conclude the storyline.

Alice, the Final Weapon (2022)
15 February 2023
Alice, the Final Weapon is a South Korean television-series written and directed by Lee Byeong-hun. High-schooler Seo Yeo-reum (Park Geon-hee) is suffering from childhood trauma and deduced himself to a human punching bag to cope with his feelings of depression and numbness. Battered and bruised without a purpose to live, he comes across the presence of transfer student Han Gyeo-wool (Park Se-wan) who harbors a mysterious past as a trained killer, codenamed "Alice." Having hidden her true identity to live a normal life in South Korea. She is hunted by assassins all over the globe. Including her former teacher, a psychopathic madman known as Spicy (Kim Tae-hoon). This not only leads to violent situations for the pair involving intense action sequences. It complicates the equation as the teenagers have fallen in love and plan to stick together through thick-and-thin. Will they be able to make it out alive whilst keeping their relationship in tact?

The premise may seem recognizable to various stories within the action-genre. But the plot is layered with an odd and out-of-the-ordinary atmosphere based off the dark humor and quirky personalities from the characters portrayed by Park Se-wan and Song Geon-hee. Keeping the viewer attentive during this eight episode season. Supplemented with upbeat tracks from composers Chung Chae-woong and Lee Seung-yeon that perfectly encapsulate the euphoria of finding your true love. The narrative explores how even damaged individuals have a chance at finding someone in the most unfortunate circumstances. And how life can become meaningful when you have a special person by your side.

Shin Ultraman (2022)

Shin Ultraman (2022)
29 January 2023
Best known for creating the popular anime 'Neon Genesis Evangelion.' Hideaki Anno serves as writer, co-producer and co-editor in this new adaptation of the 1960's character Ultraman. An extraterrestrial "dubbed" Ultraman crash lands on Planet Earth and becomes humanity's sworn protector, with the aid of the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol (SSSP) established by the Japanese government.

Modern Japan has evolved into a new battleground for giant creatures known as "Kaiju" to wreak havoc. Upon taking human form and living as one with the population to have an understanding of the human species. Ultraman concludes that mankind is worth dying for, and altruistically risks his life for the greater good. The audience is treated to bombastic action sequences, well-baked choreography and various fighting techniques from our champion which raises the entertainment value. The CGI is pretty outdated and don't translate well in certain scenes. But I wanted to overlook this flaw as I was devoted towards immersing myself in this universe. A large criticism I have is the narrative's lack of coherency. It contains an episodic structure where five stories are condensed into one feature. Making it difficult to engross ourselves into the storyline with too many subplots and a heavy amount of exposition to follow. This made the experience a bit tedious to say the least.

Despite the underdevelopment of the characters, they were likable as they had specific traits that helped them stand out. Whether it be Takumi Saitoh as the determined Ultraman or Masami Nagasawa as newcomer Hiroko Asami, delivering a humorous and charismatic portrayal of his "buddy" within the SSSP. Her onscreen presence was a favorite of mine. As the credits began to roll, I yearned for more substance due to the interesting premise. The storyline could have had a broader impact on the viewer, if fleshed out by the writer.

Jung_E (2023)

Yeon Sang-ho is director and writer in this futuristic tale about a legendary mercenary Captain Yun Jung-yi (Kim Hyun-joo) who leads the revolt with Allied Forces against the Adrian Republic, after attacking Earth and man-made shelters in outer-space, in the not-too-distant future.

During her final mission, Captain Yun Jung-yi is left in a comatose state whilst her family is approached by the research institute Kronoid with a proposition to have her brain cloned. In order to develop an AI mercenary code-named JUNG_E who will finally lead the Allied Forces to victory. Kang Soo-yeon in her final film appearance, may she rest in peace. Delivers an emotional portrayal as the daughter of the war-hero, Yun Seo-hyun, who became team leader of the research project and works diligently towards upholding her mother's legacy. I believe that keeping the honor of our ancestors was the overall message of the film, but it did become somewhat muddled in an otherwise decent premise. The storyline feels incomplete or it could have been a pilot for a sitcom. The saving grace for the film was the action sequences with Kim Hyun-joo that were exceptional and well-choreographed. Especially during the opening scene. The team behind the visual effects completely outdid themselves as this is one of the most visually remarkable films that I have ever seen from a Korean release. I can see them receiving numerous accolades for the outstanding detail on the landscapes of an Earth that has become desolate and uninhabitable through climate-change. However, the runtime was too short for a concept this ambitious. The mother-daughter relationship was the primary focus, but I also wanted the narrative to go into further detail about the fate of this futuristic society. The world-building and the characterization should have been more fleshed out as it merely felt cold and empty. The viewer is only left creatively malnourished during the closing act.

Alice in Borderland (2020– )

Alice in Borderland (2022)
23 January 2023
Adapted from the manga of the same name written by Haro Aso, and co-written and directed by Shinsuke Sato. Following the season prior Ryohei Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), Yuzuha Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) and the rest of company enter into the Next Stage where they must face off against the citizens in the 12 face cards. Hoping that after they complete this second stage, it should return them to their world. The stakes have risen to an all-time high in this round as our protagonists are confronted with numerous obstacles that will test their mind, body and soul. After a two year wait for the conclusion of the storyline. I confirm that this second season is one of the best Japanese dramas of 2022 due to the exquisite directing and writing from Shinsuke Sato and Yasuko Kiramitsu, whom have crafted a thrilling and tension-inducing sequel that is bound to shake audiences.

The performances from the main cast members are phenomenal. Specifically from power couple Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya, who have personified their roles. Becoming two of my favorite characters of the series. The character-development which I initially felt was absent from the first season was improved upon, breathing life into various characters in Borderland and allowing us to sympathize with each of their journeys. This certainly contributed to my grand experience and now I'm more inclined to read the manga to explore more backstories. Let us not forget Riisa Naka, who delivers a fabulous portrayal of the Red Queen in the final episode, leaving quite an impression. The conclusion has a beautiful message about creating a better future for ourselves, despite our negative actions in the past. Granting hope for not only the characters but the viewer. Arigato gozaimashita, for the unforgettable adventure down the rabbit hole. Congratulations to the cast and crew for outdoing themselves this time around.

M3GAN (2022)

M3GAN (2022)
23 January 2023
James Wan serves as co-producer and co-writer in a new tale involved with Blumhouse Productions about an artificially intelligent doll named M3GAN (short for Model 3 Generative Android) who is designed to be the loyal companion of Cady (Violent McGraw) after she is orphaned and sent to live with her maternal Aunt. Gemma (Allison Williams) is a roboticist, who indicates signs that she is not a suitable caretaker for her niece. Thus creating a machine-like successor to appear in her stead. M3GAN is a remarkable breath-through for the modern-age as she can sing beautiful tunes, provide emotional support towards Cady whenever she is feeling blue and even dance rhythmically which delivers solid comedic-timing. All the credit is due to Amie Donald for the physical movement, and Jenna Davis serving as the voice actress for M3GAN. Dedicating their hard work towards animating the character on the movie screen.

The plot bears a question. Are we capable of constructing a society where we are able to live in harmony with artificial beings? The answer is unraveled during the course of this film. Once M3GAN becomes self-aware and starts operating independently, deadly occurrences don't tread too far behind.

The social commentary is admirable, conveying how we've lost touch with our loved ones due to the technological advancement of our civilization. The emotional attachment that we've created towards mechanical objects has turned into an unhealthy obsession. With this being highlighted in certain scenes. We have replaced what makes life worthwhile such as the connections we build with one another, and the interactions we have that contribute towards resolving our issues.

Reborn Rich (2022)

Reborn Rich (2022)
23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Reborn Rich is a South Korean television-series, adapted from the original webtoon of the same name written by Sam Gyung. Song Joong-ki returns in the leading role as Yoon Hyeon-woo. A loyal employee working for one of the wealthiest conglomerates in South Korea. He is betrayed and murdered by his employers in Soonyang Group. Then discovers he has been reincarnated into the body of Jin Do-jun, the youngest grandson of the Soonyang family. Behind enemy lines, he seizes the opportunity to track down who murdered him and take over the company. This revenge tale becomes nothing short of compelling, due the performances of the lead cast members. Particularly Lee Sung-min who steals the spotlight as the power hungry Jin Yang-cheol, and the sound chemistry he has with Song Joong-ki is fascinating to behold. The series is well-paced, addictive and the audience is treated with intelligence until we reach the finale. The conclusion to the series turns out to be one of the most disappointing endings I have ever seen. After we've become invested in Do Jun's objective to secure the company in the previous episodes. He is unceremoniously killed off, whilst it is revealed that his alter-ego Hyeon-woo not only survived the ambush, but fabricated Do-jun's entire story arc. This creates massive plot holes and a confusing finale. As opposed to the webtoon's ending where Do-jun achieves his dream. Marrying the love of his life, Seo Min-young. This is the canon ending for me.

The reveal felt quite unnecessary and depressing. None of the characters live happier lives without the presence of Do-jun and it takes 20 years to finally overtake Soonyang. I understand subversion of expectations can be used as plot devices but this was not a correct execution. All events preceding the 16th episode are now rendered pointless. I would not recommend this series based on how unsatisfying the finish turned out to be.
