Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Like a fever dream, but wonderful
An incredible, captivating, mesmerizing journey. Its power is most closely compared to one of those fever dreams you had as a 7 year old. Filled with beautiful, hilarious wtf-moments which would hardly work in movies such as Narnia or Alice in wonderland (which also are wonderful journeys), there is a certain style and uniqueness which is hard to put a finger on with Hayao Miyazaki's work. 10/10.
Enter the Void (2009)
Could have been condensed into a 8 min music video
The director is clearly obsessed by death, perversion, despair and again death. His creations are hailed as innovative, groundbreaking masterpieces. In reality Enter the void doesnt reach further than its camerawork and cinemotagraphy, the rest is monotonous, depressing, pointless garbage. Dont waste your time on this and definitely dont compare this to 2001: a space odessey. When you rely on pontificating nihilistic, gloomy nonsense to be memorable then you havent succeded other than satisfying incels and other miserable, disdainful individuals and this is what Gaspar Noes movies are all about.
Area 51 (2015)
Greatly underrated
The way this movie starts off with the sort of frat boy vibe to it, I didn't have much of an expectation. I found myself riveted to the tv about half way in and it was definitely worth it. It's a suspenseful ride and considering lower budgeted I was very surprised. It's not the movie of 2015 but seeing some of the other reviews it's a testimony for me that consensus is not always in line with ones taste.
