The show's strengths lie in its well-written characters and its fast-paced plot. The characters are complex and believable, and the plot is full of twists and turns. The show also features some great action sequences, which will keep you entertained.

However, the show does have some weaknesses. The show can be a bit slow-paced at times, and the plot can be a bit convoluted. Additionally, the show's violence can be a bit jarring for some viewers.

A Thought-Provoking and Well-Acted Series
22 March 2023
Extrapolations is a new anthology series on Apple TV+ that explores the effects of climate change on the planet through various different points of view through interconnected stories. The series is created by Scott Z. Burns and stars an ensemble cast that includes Meryl Streep, Kit Harington, Sienna Miller, and Margaret Qualley.

The series has received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising its ambitious scope and thought-provoking content, while others have criticized its slow pace and lack of focus.

I found Extrapolations to be a thought-provoking and well-acted series. The stories are all well-written and the acting is top-notch. The series does a good job of exploring the complex and often difficult issues related to climate change.

However, I do agree with some of the critics who have criticized the slow pace of the series. The stories are often slow-moving and there are long stretches of time where nothing much happens. This can be frustrating for viewers who are looking for a more fast-paced and suspenseful series.

Overall, I thought Extrapolations was a good series. It is well-written and well-acted, and it does a good job of exploring the complex issues related to climate change. However, it is not without its flaws, and it may not be for everyone.

Lucky Hank (2023)

A Charming and Funny Midlife Crisis Comedy
22 March 2023
Lucky Hank is a new comedy drama series on AMC that follows the life of Hank Devereaux, Jr., the unlikely English department chairman at the badly underfunded Railton College in the Pennsylvania rust belt. Hank is a middle-aged man who is struggling with a midlife crisis. He is unhappy with his job, his marriage, and his life in general. However, Hank is also a very funny and charming man, and he has a way of making the people around him laugh.

The show is based on the novel Straight Man by Richard Russo, and it is adapted by Paul Lieberstein and Aaron Zelman. Lieberstein is the creator of The Office, and Zelman is the co-creator of The Killing. The two men have created a show that is both funny and heartwarming.

The show stars Bob Odenkirk as Hank. Odenkirk is an excellent actor, and he brings Hank to life in a way that is both funny and relatable. The rest of the cast is also excellent, and they all have great chemistry with each other.

The show's writing is sharp and witty, and the show is full of laugh-out-loud moments. The show also has a lot of heart, and it deals with some serious issues in a way that is both funny and thought-provoking.

Overall, Lucky Hank is a great new comedy drama series. It is funny, charming, and well-written. If you are looking for a new show to watch, I highly recommend Lucky Hank.

The Lost King (2022)
7/10
A Curious and Engaging Historical Drama
21 March 2023
The Lost King is a 2022 British historical drama film directed by Stephen Frears and written by Richard Curtis. The film stars Sally Hawkins as Philippa Langley, the amateur historian who discovered the remains of Richard III beneath a car park in Leicester in 2012. The film also stars Mark Addy, Judi Dench, and Kevin McKidd.

The Lost King is a well-made film with strong performances from its cast. Hawkins is particularly good as Langley, bringing a sense of determination and passion to the role. Addy is also good as Buckley, the archaeologist who helps Langley with her dig. Dench and McKidd are also good in their supporting roles.

The film's main strength is its historical accuracy. The film does a good job of recreating the atmosphere of 15th century England, and the costumes and sets are all very well done. The film also does a good job of portraying Richard III, who is often seen as a villain in popular culture. The film shows him to be a complex and human figure.

The film's main weakness is its length. At over two hours, the film can feel a bit slow at times. The film also suffers from some pacing issues. The first half of the film is slow, while the second half is much more fast-paced.

Overall, The Lost King is a well-made film with strong performances and historical accuracy. However, the film's length and pacing issues can make it a bit of a slow watch.

A Fun but Flawed Sequel
20 March 2023
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the second installment in the DC superhero franchise that follows Billy Batson, a teenage foster kid who can transform into an adult hero by saying "Shazam!". This time, he faces off against Hespera and Kalypso, two ancient goddesses who seek revenge on humanity for forgetting them.

The movie has a lot of strengths: it's funny, charming, heartfelt, and action-packed. The cast is great, especially Jack Dylan Grazer as Billy's best friend Freddy and Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu as the villainous sisters. The movie also explores themes of family, friendship, and identity in a meaningful way.

However, the movie also has some weaknesses: it's too long, too predictable, too overstuffed with characters and subplots. The main hero Shazam (Zachary Levi) is often overshadowed by his supporting cast and his enemies. The movie tries to juggle too many tones and genres, from comedy to horror to fantasy. The movie also suffers from some inconsistent logic and continuity issues.

Overall, Fury of the Gods is a decent sequel that delivers more of what fans liked about the first movie but doesn't quite reach its full potential. It's a fun popcorn flick that knows what it's doing but could have done it better.

Chapter 4 delivers more action-packed thrills and expands its mythology
19 March 2023
John Wick: Chapter 4 is the latest installment in the popular action franchise starring Keanu Reeves as the titular assassin. Directed by Chad Stahelski, who helmed all the previous films, this sequel continues the story of John Wick's quest for freedom from The High Table, a mysterious organization that rules over the underworld. Along the way, he faces new enemies and allies, as well as old friends and foes.

The movie is a feast for action fans, as it showcases some of the most impressive and inventive fight scenes ever put on screen. From gunfights to knife fights, from car chases to horse chases, from Paris to Tokyo, John Wick: Chapter 4 never lets up on the adrenaline and excitement. Keanu Reeves once again proves his dedication and skill as an action star, performing most of his own stunts and delivering his trademark deadpan humor.

The movie also deepens its mythology, exploring more aspects of The High Table's history and hierarchy. We learn more about John Wick's past and his connection to other characters in this world. We also meet new faces that add more flavor and diversity to the franchise. Donnie Yen plays Caine, a fellow assassin who shares a bond with John Wick. Bill Skarsgård plays Marquis, a mysterious figure who has ties to The High Table. Hiroyuki Sanada plays Shimazu, a ruthless leader of a Japanese crime syndicate.

The movie is not without its flaws, however. At nearly three hours long, it feels bloated and overstuffed at times. Some scenes drag on for too long or feel unnecessary. Some plot points are confusing or underdeveloped. Some characters are underused or wasted. The movie also relies heavily on fan service and references to previous films, which may alienate newcomers or casual viewers.

Overall, John Wick: Chapter 4 is a satisfying conclusion (or is it?) to one of the best action franchises of recent years. It delivers more of what fans love about this series: stunning action sequences, cool visuals, charismatic performances, and intriguing lore. It also leaves room for more potential stories in this universe.

A claustrophobic thriller with a stellar performance by Willem Dafoe
17 March 2023
Willem Dafoe plays Nemo, a thief who gets trapped inside a luxury penthouse after stealing some artworks. He has to survive on his own, with only his memories and some fish for company. The film is a tense and gripping exploration of isolation, identity and art, with Dafoe delivering a masterful performance that carries the whole film. Director Vasilis Katsoupis creates a suffocating atmosphere that keeps the audience on edge, while also offering some glimpses of humor and humanity. The film is not for everyone, as it can be slow-paced, repetitive and bleak at times, but it is a unique and daring experiment that showcases Dafoe's talent and charisma.

A Dull and Disappointing Dinosaur Disaster
11 March 2023
Adam Driver stars as a man who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or where he is going. He soon discovers that he is not alone, as he is hunted by vicious dinosaurs that have somehow escaped from a cargo hold. The movie tries to be a thrilling sci-fi survival story, but it fails on almost every level.

The movie also suffers from poor production values and mediocre visual effects. The spaceship looks like a generic sci-fi set with nothing distinctive or memorable. The dinosaurs are poorly rendered and look fake and cartoonish. The movie does not create any sense of tension or suspense, as the audience can easily predict what will happen next.

The movie is a disappointment for fans of Adam Driver, who deserves better material than this. He tries his best to carry the movie with his acting skills, but he cannot overcome the weak script and direction. He has no one to play off of except for some unconvincing CGI creatures.

The movie is a waste of time and money for anyone looking for a good sci-fi adventure or a thrilling dinosaur flick. It is not hall-of-fame bad, just dumb and dull.

Scream VI (2023)

Scream VI delivers a thrilling and satisfying sequel with a stellar cast and a vicious killer.
8 March 2023
Scream VI is the latest installment in the iconic horror franchise that started in 1996. The film follows the four survivors of the previous Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter. However, they soon realize that their past is not so easily forgotten when a new masked killer starts to terrorize them and their friends.

The film is co-directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who also helmed the successful reboot Scream (2022). They manage to balance homage and innovation, delivering a film that respects the legacy of Wes Craven while also offering new twists and surprises. The film is also self-aware and meta, poking fun at horror tropes and conventions without being too cynical or predictable.

The film does not shy away from gore and violence, as Ghostface proves to be one of the most ruthless killers in the series. The kills are creative and brutal, keeping us on edge throughout. The film also has a lot of humor and references to pop culture that lighten up the mood without undermining the tension. The film also pays tribute to Wes Craven's legacy by including some nods to his other works.

Scream VI is a worthy addition to the franchise that will please fans and newcomers alike. It is a fun and thrilling ride that keeps us guessing until the end.

A Masterful and Moving Adaptation
5 March 2023
The Underground Railroad is a miniseries based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead. Directed by Barry Jenkins, who also directed Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, the series follows Cora (Thuso Mbedu), a young enslaved woman who escapes from a plantation in Georgia and embarks on a perilous journey across America, pursued by a relentless slave catcher named Ridgeway (Joel Edgerton). Along the way, she discovers that the underground railroad is not a metaphor but a literal network of secret tunnels and trains that transport fugitives to different states.

The series is a stunning achievement, both visually and emotionally. Jenkins creates a vivid and immersive world that blends historical realism with magical realism, capturing the beauty and horror of Cora's odyssey. The cinematography, production design, music and sound design are all impeccable, creating a rich and atmospheric experience. The series also features some of the most powerful performances of the year, especially from Mbedu, who carries the show with her expressive eyes and resilient spirit. Edgerton is also excellent as Ridgeway, a complex and conflicted villain who represents the evil of slavery.

The series does not shy away from depicting the brutality and trauma of slavery, but it also celebrates the courage and humanity of its characters. The series explores themes such as identity, freedom, justice, love and hope through Cora's encounters with different people and places along her journey. Each episode has its own tone and style, ranging from horror to romance to satire to tragedy. The series is not an easy watch, but it is an essential one that honors the history and legacy of those who fought for their liberation.

A Gripping and Gritty True Crime Drama
5 March 2023
We Own This City is a six-part limited series that tells the true story of how a group of rogue police officers in Baltimore's Gun Trace Task Force exploited their power and authority to rob citizens, sell drugs, plant evidence, and cover up their crimes. Based on the book by Justin Fenton and adapted by David Simon and George Pelecanos, the show offers a compelling and complex look at how systemic corruption pervades not only the police department but also the city's political and judicial institutions. The show does not shy away from depicting the brutality and violence that these officers inflicted on their victims, mostly Black residents of Baltimore's impoverished neighborhoods. It also shows how their actions eroded public trust and confidence in law enforcement, especially after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody sparked widespread protests and unrest.

The show features an ensemble cast of talented actors who bring depth and nuance to their roles. Jon Bernthal stars as Wayne Jenkins, the charismatic but ruthless leader of the GTTF who rationalizes his crimes as a way of fighting crime. Josh Charles plays Daniel Hersl, Jenkins' loyal but conflicted partner who struggles with his conscience and addiction. Jamie Hector plays Sean Suiter, a homicide detective who becomes entangled in the GTTF's web of lies and faces a tragic fate. Annie Murphy plays Kelly Cross, an ambitious federal prosecutor who leads the investigation into the GTTF with her partner Ivan Bates (Gbenga Akinnagbe). And Dominic West plays Martin O'Malley, the former mayor and governor of Maryland who tries to distance himself from the scandal.

The show is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men), who skillfully balances action with character development. He also captures the authentic atmosphere and mood of Baltimore, using real locations and local actors. The show's cinematography, editing, music, and sound design are all top-notch, creating a immersive viewing experience.

We Own This City is a gripping and gritty true crime drama that exposes how corruption can destroy lives and communities. It is also a timely reminder of why police reform is urgently needed in America. It is one of the best shows of 2022.

Possessor (2020)
8/10
A Mind-Bending and Disturbing Sci-Fi Horror
5 March 2023
Possessor is a film that follows Tasya Vos, an elite corporate assassin who uses brain-implant technology to take control of other people's bodies and execute high-profile targets. However, her latest assignment goes awry when she finds herself trapped in the mind of a man who resists her invasion and fights back for his own identity. As the lines between reality and fantasy blur, Vos must face her own demons and question her sanity.

Director Brandon Cronenberg delivers a stunning and provocative film that explores themes of identity, agency, violence, and morality. Possessor is not for the faint of heart, as it features graphic scenes of gore, nudity, sex, and torture. The film also challenges the viewer to question their own perception of reality and morality. The film boasts excellent performances from Andrea Riseborough as Vos, a complex and conflicted character who struggles with her own sense of self; Christopher Abbott as Colin Tate, a reluctant host who becomes a formidable adversary; Jennifer Jason Leigh as Girder, Vos's cold and manipulative handler; and Sean Bean as John Parse, Tate's wealthy and corrupt father-in-law.

Possessor is one of the most original and daring films of 2020 and one of the best sci-fi horror films in recent years. It is a must-see for fans of Cronenberg's father David's work and for anyone who enjoys a twisted and cerebral thriller.

A Dark and Gripping Noir Thriller
5 March 2023
Director Matt Reeves creates a dark and gritty atmosphere that suits the noir tone of the film. The Batman is not a typical superhero movie, but rather a complex and layered mystery that challenges Batman's intellect and morality. The film also pays homage to some classic films of the genre, such as Se7en and Zodiac. The action scenes are thrilling and brutal, showing Batman's raw and violent nature. The cinematography by Greig Fraser is stunning, capturing the bleakness and beauty of Gotham City. The score by Michael Giacchino is haunting and epic, enhancing the mood and tension of the film.

The Batman is one of the best films of 2022 and one of the best adaptations of the iconic character. It is a must-see for fans of Batman and noir films alike.

A Mind-Bending and Spectacular Spy Thriller
4 March 2023
Tenet is a sci-fi action film directed by Christopher Nolan that revolves around a secret agent who uses time inversion to prevent a global catastrophe. The film is a dazzling display of Nolan's signature style, featuring stunning visuals, complex plot twists, and thrilling action sequences. The film also explores themes of free will, fate, and entropy. John David Washington leads the cast as the Protagonist, a charismatic and skilled spy who teams up with Neil (Robert Pattinson), a mysterious ally. Kenneth Branagh plays Andrei Sator, a ruthless Russian oligarch who seeks to destroy the world.

I enjoyed Tenet for its ambitious and original concept, its impressive cinematography, its exhilarating pace, and its clever dialogue. Ad Astra is a sci-fi drama film directed by James Gray that follows Roy McBride, an astronaut who embarks on a perilous journey across the solar system to find his missing father, who was part of a mysterious project that threatens humanity. The film is a visual masterpiece that showcases the beauty and vastness of space, as well as the dangers and challenges that come with exploring it. Brad Pitt delivers a nuanced and captivating performance as Roy McBride, a man who struggles with his emotions and his past. Tommy Lee Jones plays his father Clifford McBride, a brilliant but obsessed scientist who sacrificed everything for his mission.

I loved Ad Astra for its stunning cinematography, its gripping story, its emotional depth, and its philosophical questions. A Bloody and Bizarre Homage to 70s Horror
4 March 2023
X is a horror film directed by Ti West that follows a group of young filmmakers who try to make an adult film in rural Texas but end up being hunted by a twisted elderly couple. The film pays tribute to the classic slasher films of the 1970s, such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, with its gritty and grainy aesthetic, its shocking and gory violence, and its dark humor. The film also subverts some of the genre conventions by exploring themes of voyeurism, sexuality, and aging. The film features a dual performance by Mia Goth as both the lead actress and the killer old lady under heavy makeup. It is also part of a larger story that will continue with a prequel titled Pearl, which will focus on the origin of the old lady.

I enjoyed X for its clever and creative homage to 70s horror, its engaging and quirky characters, its disturbing and bloody kills, and its unexpected twists. I think Ti West did a great job of balancing horror and comedy, while also adding some depth and commentary to his story. I would recommend X to fans of horror who appreciate a good throwback with a modern twist.

The show is a dark comedy that does not shy away from the harsh realities of poverty, prejudice and social injustice. It also explores the themes of motherhood, friendship, sexuality and identity with honesty and humor. The show has a punky and energetic style that matches the personality of its protagonist, who is always ready to fight for what she believes in.

The show also benefits from the excellent performances of its cast, especially Cooper, who delivers a charismatic and nuanced portrayal of Costello. She makes us laugh, cry and root for her character, who is flawed but lovable. Tashjian is also impressive as Iris, who has a sharp wit and a big heart. Farthing adds some charm and contrast as Hugo, who has his own struggles with his family and his sexuality.

A fun and fast-paced spy caper with a twist
3 March 2023
The film is a typical Ritchie fare, full of witty dialogue, stylish action sequences, quirky characters and unexpected twists. Statham is in his element as Orson, a cool and competent spy who can handle any situation. Hartnett is hilarious as Danny, a vain and clueless actor who gets more than he bargained for when he agrees to play Orson's double. The film also features Aubrey Plaza as Sarah Fidelio, a CIA agent and Orson's love interest; Cary Elwes as Nathan Jasmine, Orson's boss at MI6; Hugh Grant as Greg Simmonds, an arms dealer and the main villain; and Bugzy Malone as William Dryden, Orson's partner.

The film does not take itself too seriously and delivers plenty of laughs and thrills along the way. It also pays homage to classic spy movies such as James Bond and Mission: Impossible without being derivative or clichéd. The film has some flaws such as a convoluted plot, some over-the-top scenes and some underdeveloped characters but they do not detract from its overall enjoyment.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre is a fun and fast-paced spy caper with a twist that will keep you entertained from start to finish.

He also gives a nuanced and emotional performance as Adonis, showing his vulnerability and determination. Majors is equally impressive as Damian, a complex and formidable antagonist who brings out the best and worst in Adonis. The film also features Tessa Thompson as Bianca Taylor, Adonis' wife and singer-songwriter; Wood Harris as Tony "Little Duke" Evers Jr., Adonis' trainer; Phylicia Rashad as Mary Anne Creed, Adonis' adoptive mother; Russell Hornsby as Buddy Marcelle, a shady promoter; and Andre Ward as Danny "Stuntman" Wheeler, a former opponent of Adonis.

The film explores themes of family, legacy and redemption in a realistic and engaging way. It does not shy away from addressing the racial issues that affect both Adonis and Damian, such as police brutality, incarceration and media representation. It also pays homage to the Rocky series without relying on nostalgia or fan service. The boxing scenes are well-choreographed and thrilling, with some anime-inspired touches that add flair and intensity.

Creed III is a worthy addition to the Rocky saga that stands on its own merits. It is a muscular, punishing statement on race in America that also delivers an inspiring story of courage and resilience.
