So much potential!
20 December 2023
I really want to love this movie but I just found myself feeling 'meh' in the end. The concept is interesting because it tends to get tiresome seeing gritty and tough Batman. It's great that somebody wants to lighten things up and give a more carefree view of Batman without going zany and immature to the level of Teen Titans Go.

The performances are pretty solid. I was hesitant with Luke Wilson at first but he is probably the strongest role of the film. Turns out he is well suited for the 'Bat-Dad' role.

Lastly, the animation style. I really like it. It made me feel like getting out the brushes and painting a scene. I love that it isn't too complex but still engaging.

If you're a Batman fan then check it out. Just don't expect anything eye opening or revolutionary.

Renfield (2023)

Solid with some flaws.

First off, I thoroughly enjoyed Cage in his role. He seems to be having great fun in the role.

Hoult's role as Renfield was great casting as well. The rest of the cast is okay and nobody really underwhelms.

As for the plot and premise, it is a somewhat unique take on the tried and true Dracula formula. Plenty of funny moments plus they didn't skimp on the action side of things. My only flaw is the whole film is too predictable. I guess in 2023 it isn't easy to be wholey original but it works for the majority of the film.

Overall, if you want something with action, some laughs, gore, LOTS of gore, and a solid Nick Cage performance, check this one out.

The Visitor (2022)

Starts interesting, turns aggravating, ends insultingly

In the beginning it seems like a solid little horror/mystery movie. Then people disappear and you start analyzing to see who you think is behind things. Then in the end, it takes a total 180 and comes crashing down. I'd think the intention here was more about creating a series than a single good movie but I don't see why anybody would come back for more. Since this is spoiler-free, the 'twist' is okay but I got most of it correct just from the experience of watching similar films.

I think the performances here were fairly solid, but the substance just lacks. It SHOULD be engaging but it just isn't and I think it is because of the similarities to other better movies.
