The Stag (2013)
Give this one a wide berth
I sat down in the mood for a nice little light hearted comedy, as the previous reviews on IMDb had promised. A look at the nine and ten out of ten scores and an overall of 6.5 gave me the idea that if not brilliant, would have some laughs and be a decent film. How wrong I was. This is the sort of film that has adopted the 'all men are useless, clueless, fools, but in touch with their feminine sides' school of film making. The main characters are clunky, inept caricatures that one could have been forgiven for thinking that they had originally been written as pre adolescent girls, not grown men. Their ineptitude was the set up for the "comedy", which was just not funny and seemed very contrived. It all just served to irritate after a very short while and continued to do so as the film progressed. The line up consisted of some rather quite good actors and i'm not sure if it was the awful script, bed set ups, bad direction, miscasting or a combination of all the above, but non of their previously seen talent could have cut through this drivel with a chainsaw. I should think most of them will be embarrassed to have this movie on their C.V's. I think all in all, the high rating given to this film must be from interested parties skewing the figures and will in time even out when more people have faced the ordeal of sitting through this lame excuse for a comedy. i would avoid this one, go paint the fence or something, it'll be more productive.
Blake's 7 (1978)
Cynical Science Fiction
A now dated science fiction show originally aired by the BBC in the late 70's with low production values, wobbly scenery and awful special effects. On the plus side, the plots and the cynical themes running through the show give it a hard edged grittiness that hasn't been repeated since and budget aside probably the best scifi series of all time, not something that i would say if undeserving. The characters, all of them villains of one kind or another, yes that includes the so called 'goodies' (something new)and all of them disliking each other and with no sense of camaraderie at all. Well scripted on the whole, well acted by the cast especially Paul Darrow and Jaqueline Pierce as Avon and Servelan the now cult adversaries. All this gives the show albeit a well worn look but nonetheless a fantastic show, well worth the watch that dares to be bleak and cynical about the future with no silver linings. In the end the low production values don't matter as you are captured by the narrative and the acting that will soon hook you. You have been warned.
Zone of the Dead (2009)
Old School Zombie Cool
Definitely a throw back to the "old school" of zombie film making. The acting, direction and dialogue are rather wooden and stilted for the most part as with Romeros classics but that said it does give this film the look and feel of the originals and thus makes it an entertaining way to spend your viewing afternoon. There are some rather irritating moments when the main protagonists whilst running from hordes of pursuing zombies still find time to stop mid flight to engage in some rather meaningless and throwaway conversation and one liners but not enough to spoil the movie. This movie, although low budget and with flaws does on the whole entertain albeit in a predictable fashion with few surprises. If you like the old school feel, this movie is worth a look and will satisfy your blood lust, if you prefer the more high end, special effect type of movie, it's probably not for you.
