The Stand (1994)
Well I'll never be able to read that again
Point 1. Rob Lowe playing Nick Andros. Rob Lowe! Point 2. Molly Ringwald playing Frannie! Molly Ringwald.
Yep the cast really was that terrible. With the possible exception of Gary Sinise as Stu, the whole movie was so badly cast I am never going to be able to read this book again without the hideous picture of Rob Lowe ruining the character of Nick. And Molly Ringwald reduced the character of Fran to a whiny, annoying little girl when in the book she's such a strong person. And where the hell was Rita? She's a vital part of the story, especially in how her death later effects Larry's character. If you've already had the misfortune to see this, then go and read the book, it's so much better. If you've read the book but haven't seen this, don't, it'll kill it for you.
Hyperdrive (2006)
I so wanted to like it...
I love Red Dwarf.
There, I've said it and I'm not going to mention it again since the only flaw anyone's been able to find with Hyperdrive is that it's not as good as Red Dwarf. That's really not the point because it has very little in common with Red Dwarf at all apart from the fact that it's set in space.
Hyperdrive is boring. It's badly put together, badly acted by people who should know far more about comedic timing and it all feels rather sad because it's a good opportunity that's been wasted. The first episode was complete rubbish but I told myself I'd give it a chance and keep watching. Unfortunately it didn't get any better. In a half hour show I laughed maybe twice and that was at Kevin Eldon as York, who is the only character in it that is even remotely funny.
Don't waste your time. That's half an hour you're never getting back...
Bottom (1991)
Amazing comedy
I have to say that I actually don't like Bottom quite as much as The Young Ones. I don't know why but to me TYO is slightly better. However Bottom is still fantastic. Rik and Ade are hilarious in this and I recommend anyone who likes it to get it on DVD because the reams of outtakes are also amazingly funny. I love the character of Richie - I'm not sure you're supposed to because he's not exactly likable but he's just brilliantly played by Rik Mayall. I would agree with Jack Massey that Burglary is the best episode but the best quote is when the police show up and spot Eddie reading the paper. Policeman: Did you know that paper's upside down? Eddie: Err....so are my eyes (rolls his eyes like a lunatic). Genius.
Drop Dead Fred (1991)
The best film EVER!!
I don't know how anyone could be so uptight as to find this film offensive!! Granted Rik Mayall's acting may be a bit of an acquired taste (although actually he's a comedic genius) but it really shocked me how seriously people have taken this. I appreciate that it's not for everyone but seriously, if you watched this and felt insulted on behalf of people with mental illnesses you've really missed the point of the film. Elizabeth's not ill, she's lonely and she's the product of a really bad upbringing and the comments that sympathise with her mother scare me! It's a kids film, it's supposed to be silly! Everyone who has said it's immature are the exact kind of people the film is making fun of. I feel really sorry for anyone who can't appreciate this film, you really need to smile more. I laugh all the way through and still cry at the end.
