Cheap Thrills (2013)
A disturbing sign of the times
Anyone who found anything humorous, dark or otherwise, in this film is not someone I would hang out with. If there have been worse movies made, I don't want to know about them. At least, most reviewers acknowledge the disturbing nature of the film. Why they don't come to the logical solution that it's a grotesque comment of the state of our culture is beyond me.
Instead they tell us that's it's a thought-provoking commentary on greed, the rich, human fragility, or some such nonsense. It is not. It's a depraved film dubbed a "comedy". The high rating of the film on tomatoes is a sure tip-off about its quality.
Wolf Pack (2023)
It doesn't get better
Some reviewers have suggested that it gets better ass the series rolls on. It doesn't. The story line moves at a snail's pace and advances very little. The acting is sub par. I was intrigued by "Buffy" returning but after watching her for a few moments, I remember she isn't that great. The story is stale and predictable while being culturally "relevant and courageous". If this show even remotely depicts today's teenagers correctly, we are doomed. Luna is the only decent character but only in comparison to the others. Her character is bland and shallow but not unpleasant.
And if you grit your teeth and make it to the end because you want to see an exciting climax. Forget it! Possibly, the worst season/series finale that I've ever seen. The villain is a werewolf hunter, who is usually the hero in these stories, and is kept alive because they need him? And that's the only question that gets answered. Were they trying to spur demand for a season two? No thanks, not interested.
Who Killed Cooper Dunn? (2022)
It's unwatchable
I watched the first thirty minutes and then skipped to the end to see the solution. To anyone who sat through the entire movie, why? The writers apparently have a vocabulary of eighty words. Obscenties run rampant. In an attempt to make it real or gritty? The effect is to induce complete and utter boredom and disgust.
In addition to the awful dialogue and obnoxious, ridiculous characters, the "story" is nonexistent. Consisting of antics reflecting the fantasies of a fifteen-year-old boy; followed by actions which defy reality, logic, and any sort of common sense.
And for the twist at the end, the less said the better. I normally don't give one or two star since I caan usually find something redeemable but not in this one.
Poker Face (2023)
Sort of Columbo 2.0
While the first two episodes were a bit long but watchable, episode 3 was so bad that I give up. Extremely offensive and unfunny. Conservatives are depicted as dumb, snapping, braying dogs because...? You might think that the whole of the show is destroyed. Charlie apparently believes in a number of left-wing fantasies. Where is her lie detector? In fairness, the left has no idea what ther right believes so how can she judge? But that discussion is beyond anything you will find it this show.
It's absurd to compare this tripe to Columbo. The only similarity is that the "solution" in episode 3 is the same as in Columbo: The Most Crucial Game.
Harbinger Down (2015)
Either watch this once or heed the warnings
I watch a lot of loow-budget films. Occasionally, i will get 20 minutes into a film and then realize that I've seen it beofre. This film is so forgettable that it wasn't until the one hour mark that I realized that I saw it before.
The story has been done a thousand times before, the acting was unremarkable. Even Lance Henriksen went through the motions. The characters are all cardboard cutouts who elicit no sympathy from the viewer. And while people do foolish things in horror movies, (aka lazy writing), the people in this film are exceptionally dumb. Apparently, the first time I watched this film, it made no impression upon me. This time I will remember the film and not fondly.
One of Us Is Lying (2021)
Who writes these shows?
Did teenagers write this? The plot holes are huge and omnipresent. The few sane characters are treated with disdain. Though there is one exception. The script is unremarkable, save for when they slam the Twilight series in a hilarious moment of irony.
A few characters are likable, most aren't. All the possible stereotypes are here. In fact, we get an overabundance of them. And amazingly, the actors are all interchangeable. The main characters despite the superficial differences are essentially the same.
I dare you not to guess who the killer is. Expect no twists. If this isn't written by teenagers, why would adults subject us to such drivel?
Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell (2018)
Any hope of a comeback is gone
I found the first three movies very enjoyable. Although, the endless praise of Bacon/Ward never made sense to me. Bacon's "acting" consisted of tossing his hair and swearing. Ward provided some comic relief but, as we saw in Tremors 2, was not capable of carrying a movie. Can anyone imagined Bacon or Ward's characters carrying five decent films? Gummer should have been the main character since the start.
The series began to suffer in part four. I did find the television series good enough. The addition of Kennedy in part 5 was a huge mistake. The writing became lazy and full of cliches. They couldn't even work in the beautiful African scenery very well. But it showed flashes. Alas, anyone hoping that the decline would be halted has to be disappointed with this film.
Little Evil (2017)
Completely forgettable
If I don't write this review now, i will have forgotten that I watched this film. Everything is forgettable: the writing, the acting (and hence the actors) and the story. Often reviewers sill claim that they wasted their time watching a film. In this case, I doubt that you will remember how you spent your time watching this (an alien time loss?)
Lily's character could be amusing if she put any effort into it. Adam Scott isn't actually a forceful presence on the screen. Scott's sidekick quickly grown tiresome. There are a couple of familiar faces in the background, but they add little to the film.
Enigma (2009)
Not a classic, but not bad
The shortness of the film precludes much character development but it's hard for me to get bored in 40 minutes. Special effects were ok as was the acting. The story was interesting enough though one wondered why they transport such a dangerous entity on a decrepit spacecraft. But that's explained somewhat. I often marvel at the one star and ten star ratings that films receive. There are lots of terrible movies out there, this one holds your interest at least. It's probably a 5 but credit for being such low budget but not being garbage. And there is a bit of a twist at the end which gives it an extra star for me.
