Silo (2023)
Well-executed but not an original concept
I really enjoyed this show. However, I have to say that it's just a reimagining of a book you probably read in middle school called, "The Giver." If you haven't read it, the film adaptation was excellent and I'm not usually a fan of adaptations.
This is absolutely the same story. So strikingly similar I wouldn't be surprised to find out they didn't get sued over it. It didn't only borrow themes from The Giver but I noticed parallels to other literary, film, and video game titles.
Now that I've gotten that out-of-the-way, it was a fantastic show. I loved it from start to finish. I highly recommend that you watch.
The Continental (2023)
Snoozefest
I was on the fence about watching this knowing that Mel Gibson was one of the stars. I gave it a go and was bored to tears throughout. I'm not a John Wick fanatic per se, but I do enjoy the films. I generally do not watch anything involving Mel Gibson because he's a racist bigot, and overrated actor. It's not a huge investment because each episode is only 90 minutes and there's only three episodes. But nonetheless, it's still time I can't get back and it left a bad taste in my mouth in an otherwise enjoyable franchise. It really makes me wish the franchise had ended at John Wick three. The reviews on here seem to be very divided by die hard fans of the franchise who want to give it an 8 to 10 and people who are a bit more realistic.
Goliath (2016)
I like it when it's a "legal drama"
Let me start by saying that the series should be rated by each individual season. The first season was exceptionally great. The second season should not have existed the third season got a little better but still not worth watching and then the fourth season was really good again. It's hard to consider this series as "legal drama." I enjoyed the first season because they spent a large amount of their time in the courtroom. This is what drew me to the show. The second season I don't think they ever appeared in court the third season they did not appear in court until about halfway through the season. Season two and three could truthfully be skipped altogether. If they had continued the series just as they did with season one I would have loved the show. While the performances by all actors involved was great, the writing and direction left a lot to be desired. Overrated imo.
Nobody Wants This (2024)
For me, this is not
There were parts of this that I really liked. The funny bits were funny but it turned serious and I was less interested. Also, one of the worst endings ever. I understand the ending (it's so they can make more seasons if people are into it - but I am not). I generally like Kristen Bell but not sure she was the right choice for this. The preview made it look like a comedy and it is listed as a comedy but is it a comedy? Meh, not really. Maybe the first 2 episodes but not really after that. Too many people are giving this show more praise than it deserves so I'm left with little choice; I have to give it a 1/10 to take it down a notch. Realistically it's probably a 5-6.
The Perfect Couple (2024)
Too soapy. I didn't finish it
Too much going on. It's highly unlikely ONE of any of the million things simultaneously happening would ever happen in reality. I know some have praised Nicole Kidman's performance but I won't. Liev Shriber is the star of the show. I gave up about halfway in. Part of me really wants to know "whodunnit" but part of me just wants to be done with this nonsense forever. I'm fully aware I could skip to the last episode but I really don't think it's going to be worth it.
The show has few redeeming qualities. It's beyond "soapy" and over-the-top. Unless you're into that sort of thing, I recommend you skip this one.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
You have to watch it until the end
I feel like most people are going to love or hate this series. I'm probably in the minority thinking it was okay. I didn't really care for the format and nearly gave up after episode 3, then again at episode 5 but I hung in there. I'm not going to say that it was worth it but I was a fan of the ending. I also feel like it could have been condensed into 1 season.
Just know going into this if you want any sort of satisfaction you'll have to wait until the last episode to get it and if you find yourself giving up it might be a good idea just to quit. This was also another series that blurs the line between an adult/teen show. IMO it should have just gone full adult and it would have been better.
After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun (2024)
Another pointless documentary
I love documentaries but lately I've noticed a trend that a lot of these Hollywood type documentaries come without any real substance or resolution. Its sole purpose is to make those involved look good. If you're main purpose for this is to see what Pamela Anderson is up to, there's one out there that's pretty good but she is not even in this so if that's what you're looking for then move on. Produced by David Hasselhoff and some other members of the show, I think the whole point was to validate themselves, give themselves a pat on the back, slap it together and it's done. It was both too long and too short at the same time. It's not worth watching from my perspective.
Preacher (2016)
Something other than God is missing
I really wanted to love this show. I read the books when I was a teenager, so I don't remember all the details. I can say for certain that this deviated from the source material quite a bit. I LOVED the first season. If I was rating the series by season; season 1 would be a 10, season 2 would be an 8, seasons 3 & 4 would be a 6-7. There are still many things to love about this series but there is a clear drop off in the last two seasons. You'll start to see Seth Rogan's name less and less in the credits. Interestingly enough the side characters are the main thing keeping it interesting (but I found this true of the comics too). That being said, it's a fairly unique show. Not for people who are overly religious or are offended easily.
The Gift (2015)
Stick to Horrible Bosses and not this horrible movie
Jason Bateman was absolutely the wrong choice for this role, and he totally phoned in his performance. Slow story that evolves just the way you expect it to and this is nothing new, by the way. It's been done many times and executed far better.
I didn't just have a problem with Bateman, I found everything to be stale with the script and the story. The run time is 1 hour and 48 minutes and it felt like it was an hour too long.
The only saving grace in this film is Joel Edgerton's performance. Aside from that I recommend you skip this one. I was a bit surprised by the 7/10 it has been rated on here. The only reason it doesn't get a 1 from me was Edgerton and other supporting cast.
Locke & Key (2020)
Just short of greatness
I enjoyed this series. There are a few things bothering me after finishing it: was this meant to be for kids or adults? I'm really sick of shows these days straddling the line. Choose a lane and stick with it. I think I would have enjoyed a G or R-rated version much more than PG-13.
I didn't read the books (I am up to date with Something Is Killing the Children and I expect I will be extremely critical when the live action version comes out) but I've noticed the reviews of people who have read the books didn't care for it as much as those who did not.
To address the "bad acting" some critics have expressed; it's about 50/50. Some actors did a great job.
The third season took the biggest criticisms for lazy writing (to which I agree) but it had the best villain and I enjoyed it because of that.
I recommend you go into this one with modest expectations and you will likely get some enjoyment out of it. It truly could have been marvelous.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Of boredom, of repetition, of unnecessary closeups
This was a tough watch for me. Honestly if they had ended it sooner rather than dragging it on I might have enjoyed it. The show utilizes several directors so it puzzles me why each one is fixated on zooming in and or hovering above Elizabeth Moss' face all the time. It's bizarre what a staple that has become for this series.
I feel like the actors all did a great job. My 1 star rating is in hopes to take this show down a peg. It's not as good as everyone says. By season 3 the repetitive nature of the show really starts to get to you and I find myself playing with my phone or doing some chores rather than being invested in what's going on.
Some people will love this show and if you think you're one of them go for it but I found it tedious.
Marmalade (2024)
This movie basically has 3 actors
And they all nailed it! It's difficult to describe this movie without giving any spoilers. All I can say is watch it! It's extremely rare that I give a 10/10 but this one really sucked me in. The performances were brilliant!
It's an engaging, well-written story with a feel-good, surprise ending. It genuinely made me wish that this was a series and not a one-off. I think they could have made this adventure last much longer.
I'm a bit surprised by some of the low reviews it has received, but the fans of this film seemed to really have enjoyed it.
Recently it feels like I often choose a movie at random and I feel like I just wasted 2 hours. This is a rare find!
Suicide Squad Isekai (2024)
I gave up
I truly was hoping I would be able to side with the high reviews for this show, but it's just so awful on every level. The animation is bad, the voice acting is bad, the story is bad...it's all bad. I speak Japanese so after the first episode I switched from the English version to the Japanese. While this did improve things it just wasn't worth it for me to hang in on this one. The intros and outros are blatant rip offs of Cowboy Bebop. The only positive I can give it is the artwork/style of it is sleek and nice to look at but a bad show is a bad show.
I gave up 3-4 episodes in. If you know nothing about Suicide Squad or decent Japanese anime you might enjoy this.
Brats (2024)
To put a phrase for this time period into todays lingo - 👎👎
First of all, I love 80s pop culture. I grew up in the 80s and idolized many of the actors involved with this project. I'm still big fans of just about everyone involved.
However, this type of self-serving dribble is disgraceful.
What's missing from the production is exactly that; something is missing.
Here's what's missing from my point of view:
No one ever mentioned what their agents/family had encouraged them to do at the time. It's just not realistic to believe this group of young adults chose (unilaterally) to distance themselves from one-another all our their own accord.
We were teased that we might hear from certain people from that era...but we never do.
The last scene was particularly bothersome for me as it teases a sequel...please for the love of God don't let there be a sequel!
All this film really accomplished for me was tainting some good film memories with bitterness. Whether the bitterness was/is deserved is still up for grabs! The film doesn't accomplish what it set out to do imo. I'm no closer to having closure than I would have been 30 years ago! 👎👎
The Vince Staples Show (2024)
Extremely derivative. Funny at times. You make the call
This is a tough review because there were aspects of the show I really enjoyed, and others I didn't. It's like it was trying too hard to be both funny and serious at the same time. Pick a lane in my opinion. Possibly it's building up to something but with the episodes available to me currently, I'm not super interested in another season.
I gave it a 5/10 because I do think it has potential. The funny bits were truly laugh out loud funny but it seemed like 30 seconds later we were tackling some serious social injustices and that's not what I signed up for.
It's trying very hard to be the live action version of The Boondocks but just not as funny (not even close).
Eileen (2023)
We get it. You're an "artist"
Yes, let's all go out and buy HDTVs. Let's take it another step and upgrade to 4k and then 8k. Then let's have another director use some crappy filter to make us feel like we're watching something from that time period. Guess what? It didn't work.
Horrible script and lackluster acting from Anne Hathaway. Her character wasn't even slightly believable.
Frankly, none of it was believable. This is possibly the worst rating I've had to give.
Upon finishing the movie, nearly everything felt unfinished. I felt completely dissatisfied with nearly every aspect of the film and I wished I had a Time Machine.
Do yourself a favor and save yourself the time.
Unlocked: A Jail Experiment (2024)
Background noise. Boring show
This is fine to have playing in the background while you're working or something but it's not very gripping or entertaining. I'm not much for reality TV but the premise had me intrigued. If this somehow lays the ground work for prisons to become better; I guess I'm for it.
As a source of entertainment it just wasn't for me and a 4/10 was me being generous.
I finished it just because I wanted to see where it was going but it truly wasn't an easy watch. I found myself bored with most of it (again I had it on while I was working so to be fair I wasn't paying super close attention to it).
My advice is if you find yourself still bored 2-3 episodes in just give up. It doesn't get any better.
Clickbait (2021)
I want my 5 hours back
The ending isn't even a twist. It's not so much a "whodunnit" as it is a "we don't introduce the killer until the last episode." Save yourself the time and skip this one.
The acting is stiff and it's tough to get through each episode. The only reason you keep watching is to try to solve the mystery...which is pointless because it's just dropped on you without a lot of meaningful exposition. Speaking of, most of the exposition is red herring type stuff meant to throw you off the track of figuring out who the real killer is, which again, you won't know until they tell you. I'm genuinely mad I spent my time on this series.
Boston Legal (2004)
I wanted it to be over
I remembered really loving this show when it first came out. 20 or so years later I could barely finish it. I enjoyed the first 3 seasons but beyond that the same old shtick got really old really fast.
I hated the fact that they basically never lost in court, even in the most absurd of circumstances. It's definitely not realistic.
It's an enjoyable watch for the most part but even after 5 seasons the characters don't evolve and I got sick of seeing the exact same thing in every single episode. Despite everything I dislike about it I still gave it a 7/10 so I guess the good outweighs the bad.
The best part about the show is the relationship between Denny & Alan.
The worst part is its repetitive nature and tendency to remove characters I liked with no explanation and keeping characters I didn't like. Same judges every season, same stupid rigamarole.
X-Men '97 (2024)
Finally! Something that lives up to the hype!
I know it's only been 2 episodes and a 10/10 may be ambitious but I can't express how satisfied I am with this!
Recently, us nerds have had our hopes built up by reboots and live-action remakes that left us feeling betrayed and disappointed. Finally, X-Men 97 delivers!
I'm so happy they kept this kid friendly so my generation can enjoy it with our kids.
So far, the show is exactly like you remember it from your Saturday mornings. Nostalgia ensued within the first second.
I can't wait to see what this show brings us. My only complaint is that they didn't release the entire series immediately but I don't think Disney+ does that.
Thank you Chris Claremont! Well done Disney!
Family Guy (1999)
Can we just let a good thing die?
I loved this series from the very beginning but it's not standing the test of time for me. The show is heavily based on references that were either relevant in the earlier seasons and not now, or so old some younger viewers might now get it.
I wish this show, and many other animated series would just die with dignity.
Some of the new episodes are flat out unwatchable to me and I feel like I want my 22 minutes back. Comparatively, I feel the same way when I watch older episodes too so it's hard for me to rate. I ended up on 7/10 for the many years of solid laughs it provided but I'm ready for an ending.
At least it's not gotten as bad as Rick and Morty.
Rick and Morty (2013)
Compare reviews from 2013-2015 to now
"Oh geeez, man." I 100% agree with the reviews that say seasons 1-3 are amazing and anything after that is a tough watch.
Don't get me wrong, there are some great episodes sprinkled into seasons 4-5, but they are too few and far between to make the show really worth sticking with.
Season 6 was tough. Season 7 was nearly impossible to finish and I don't feel confident about the series moving forward.
I wouldn't recommend keeping a subscription to pay for this show. Wait until all eps are free at this point, imo.
The show lost its heart and soul and in the words of Rick himself, "It's a joyless cash grab."
RIP Rick and Morty 😢.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Ignore the haters on this one
It's beautiful. The wardrobe, the scenery, the effects.
I rewatched the original in preparation for this. There are several scenes that are shot-for-shot from the original.
Overall I thought the casting was pretty good. I'm not gonna nitpick the ones I didn't care for because overall I felt the series was very much a success.
A lot of people are complaining that there's "not enough humor" but this isn't a cartoon. The stakes feel higher and therefore you don't have as much time to make light of the situation. FYI, there is a fair amount of humor; enough imo.
I'm excited to see where this journey takes us.
My advice is to ignore all of the low reviews and watch it with an open mind. It's just too quality of a show to skip out on cause you read some haters opinion.
This isn't your Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell live action remake.
Second best cartoon to film adaptation I've seen to date. Erased being the first.
Watch this!
Pluto (2023)
Perfection!
I'm a huge Osama Tezuka fan. This was the perfect combination of Astroboy meets Metropolis, meets, Akira and Detective Conan!
The animation matches the era too (which is important to me).
I haven't been this emotional over an anime since Grave of the Fireflies, Fullmetal Alchemist, Saikano or Now, then here & there!
Each episode is compelling and it's extremely difficult to put down (even when you have to get up soon for work).
It's by far the best anime produced by Netflix and a must watch! It's a 10/10 for me.
I have cried at the end of many anime from the 80's & 90's but it has been a while since then. You will not regret the 8 hours you invest into this!
