Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)
a well researched film
with brilliant acting, directing and reconstruction of places. YOu really feel immersed in the period and very much part of it. It is an unusual & very shocking film as it has a very unlikely story to tell: that of a serial killer in search of the ultimate perfume employing the most bizarre means to get it. The opening scene is very gory: the birth of a baby in a fish market....not advised for the squeamish! I did not enjoy this film at all, even if I recognise its brilliance - I feel it is gratuitous violence for what? I am very surprised that the general vote is so high as I wonder who it would appeal to. When I saw it the cinema was quite empty and some people walked out before then end!
Il mercante di pietre (2006)
an excellent film
Unfortunately the subject is all too real and very present in our daily life, but this film has a very intelligent approach to a difficult and disturbing reality. I has made me think for days after seeing it and even analysing each detail it all makes sense. The question is do you want to go to the cinema to see what is only too obvious on the news already? if you are looking for light entertainment this is not the film for you, but if you want to think and ponder of current issues, this is the one that is going to make you think. I loved this film and thought that it was brilliantly acted, directed even if I found it profoundly disturbing.
Volver (2006)
a brilliant movie
.......especially coming at a time when there is very little worth seeing. I found this film touching, extremely funny & enjoyable - the only criticism is that it could have been a little shorter and it would have had an even greater impact. Although I recognise Almodovar as a great film maker/director & have seen all his films and not enjoyed any of them as much as I have this one. I have found some quite difficult to watch & understand, while this one is very easy to empathise with all the characters as they are so humane and believable. The performance of all the actors is superb and the photography at times sublime. I liked it so much that I will definitely see it again.
The Man Who Sued God (2001)
absolutely brilliant
the dialogue was witty, intelligent and thoroughly enjoyable - all actors were excellent and Billy Connelly was his usual larger than life character. Judy David was superb and the whole film witty and fun. The Scottish accent was a bit hard to understand at times, though.
Adaptation. (2002)
a very good movie
Nicholas Cage is very good in his dual role of 2 such different characters and Meryl Streep is her usual outstandingly wonderful actress. The whole thing is credible and runs well, but I have found a trifle too long - it would have benefitted from a bit of editing.
The Magdalene Sisters (2002)
What a masterpiece!
Although the subject of this film is sad and depressing, this is a giant of a film. The acting is superb and makes the characters so real and the film so credible. Hardly an uplifting film, but one well worth seeing.
Two Weeks Notice (2002)
delightful feel good film
It is good to go to the cinema and laugh - the film is light, romantic and highly predictable but you walk out feeling much better than when you went in - in these tense and anxious days, I feel that is a big plus
The Hours (2002)
is a false nose sufficient for an award?
There were brilliant performers in this film: M Streep, E Harris, J Moore and V Wolf's husband but Nicole Kidman's performance was v disappointing (apart from the fact that she was much too young of the part). She went to her suicide without showing any emotion while the other actors were brilliant. I found the film fairly depressing and not so easy to understand until nearly the end. I did not enjoy it and in my opinion it does not deserve the rave reviews it got.
About Schmidt (2002)
Jack Nicholson is as great as ever!
It was magnificent to see him act in all ranges of emotions and only be marginally upstaged by K Bates who was magnificent. The whole film was delightful: a wonderful mix or sad and funny...just like life, I suppose. As funny goes, I preferred "As good as it gets" which for me is the best comic film ever - this was not quite as good, but great all teh same.
Frida (2002)
a pleasurable assualt to the senses
The acting is superb all round but the 2 leading roles steal the show - the costumes are beautiful and the whole thing is very sensual and pleasurable. If you see this on a grey, dull day, you expect to come out and see the sun shining! A trifle too long, could have done with some editing but,on the whole, it is a superb film.
Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002)
a most moving story
beautifully filmed, it transports you in the scene feeling totally at one with it. There is no awareness of directing or acting; it is all so natural. Athough not Australian, I left the cinema with a deep sense of shame for all the atrocities that have been perpetrated on humanity in all ages in the name of justice/righteousness.
