Shameless (2011)
Should've called it quits earlier
While this show never gets bad or boring, I feel they dragged it out for too long. Had they stopped after season 7 or so, this show would've been even more legendary than it actually was. The early seasons (1 - 6) were amazing and season 7 was pretty good, but it went downhill after that.
It got even worse after Fiona left - she was the glue that held the family together and all of a sudden she abandoned everything she worked so hard for, plus they forgot she was still Liam's legal guardian, which was a big deal in season 3/4. Lip became a frustrated addict who blames everything but himself for every bad thing that happened to him. And don't get me started on what they did to Debbie, who was already insufferable when the show was still good but somehow manages to get worse every time you think she hit an all-time low. However, the later seasons still had some redeeming qualities; Ian and especially Mickey were pretty hilarious, Carl and Liam had good character development, and William H. Macy still did a great job portraying Frank's good AND bad sides and somehow managed to make me feel bad for Frank towards the end, even though he had it all coming and his ending was 100% warranted.
Sex Education: Episode 6 (2023)
Sex Education at its best - both the drama and the comedy
Great episode! The chaotic cremation was in true Erin-style. It showed both Maeve's ambiguity and Sean's bitterness brilliantly. Both their feelings are very understandable and valid. It was sad Maeve and Sean didn't get to reconcile, but also felt realistic. Otis and Eric finally started talking about the things that bothered them, but sadly enough, weren't in the right mindset to listen to each other. It was nice that Aimee got everyone together for the funeral - she's amazing! I'm also a sucker for the episodes where they all get together and connect with one another the way they did.
On a side note: great to have the teachers back, even if it's just for one episode! The moment between Maeve and Emily was very sweet and Colin's rendition of "With or Without You'' was amazing - and I'm saying this as someone who doesn't even like U2. The choice for this song was also nice. Even if it's about something completely different, I can see how it's fitting to describe the relationship with an addicted parent.
Sex Education: Episode 8 (2023)
Is this even an ending?!
Not bad, but I've got so many questions after this final episode. This doesn't feel like an ending at all. I loved Jackson's storyline throughout the series and I was happy he finally properly apologized to Cal for being a dick just because he couldn't deal with his unrequited crush. And Viv finally dumped that toxic (insert your favourite cuss word here), good for her! I was glad to see Cal was alive and well. Eric finally being able to reconcile his Christianity with his queer identity felt good too. Maeve going back to America was overdue, not gonna lie. Sorry for Otis, he'll sure miss her around, but she couldn't miss out on this opportunity.
But still. All the questions. Do Otis and Maeve still stay in touch after that one-night stand? What will happen between Aimee and Isaac? Will things work out between Adam and his work friend? Why did Steve, Lily, and Rahim vanish into thin air? What happened to the goat? Will Sean get his act together and get clean? Will the teachers from S1 to S3 get married and have tons of kids? Where will all of the main characters end up eventually? We need a movie, a spinoff, I don't care, anything to clear up these doubts. Anything.
El árbol de la sangre (2018)
Fine arthouse, albeit slightly confusing
Najwa Nimri nails pretty much every part she plays and this movie is no exception. She could play a burlap sack and I'd still watch. That said, the rest of the cast does a good job too. The storyline gets a tad confusing here and there due to the use of flashbacks, but overall this movie is a pretty enjoyable watch if you're in the mood for some arthouse drama.
