A Waltons Thanksgiving (2022)
I should have skipped this
I watched the Christmas one, in either fall of 2020 or 2021. I can't recall. I had this one on my dvr for two months, trying to figure out if I should watch it. I finally did, and I regret it. It was horrible. The acting was atrocious. The plot was so dumb, after an hour, I was like, this still has an hour left! The whole thing with Livvie being too afraid to judge grandma's pie was ridiculous. I really did not understand why this was such an Earth shattering thing. Just judge the pies, and make a decision, if she wins she wins. I couldn't understand why it was such a big deal. And yes, I watched the entire original Walton's series in my life on re-runs. This just made no sense to me at all. I just do not think Ellen Corby's grandma would have cared this much about a pie. Oh and then there's a subplot with a kid who's being abused, and he's in foster care, and the Walton's adopt him and surprise, it's the missing Ben. I don't think I will subject myself to anymore of these films. But who knows, I'm a sucker for nostalgia.
Grace of Monaco (2014)
Waste of film
I watched this film last night thinking it would be a nice, pretty period piece. Yes, the costumes were beautiful. The classic cars, nice. Other than that, it is total rubbish. Hitchcock shows up in Monaco to give Grace the script for Marnie. Why she wanted to even do this horrendous film is beyond me. It's one of Hitch's worst. We are treated to the Prince Rainier, who comes across as a total nerd. I had no idea why, when watching this film, a beauty like Grace would marry this guy. He's neurotic, uptight, and just not like able. She's struggling to be a wife, mother and Princess. Yawn. Too many close up's of Nicole's eye. Just weird. No chemistry between Nicole and Tim Roth as Rainier. The entire plot is stupid, France wants Monaco to start paying taxes, gasp! What a scandal, enough to go to war over? Just dumb. I couldn't muster up an ounce of sympathy for these characters. Grace was a beautiful woman and good actress, but this movie about her life, was a bore. The big speech at the end was cringe worthy and I hope, not real in any way.
Elvis (2022)
Not much good about this film
As a fan of country music and country music history I was very upset about the way the very beginning of the movie was. Hank Snow, Jimmie Rodgers, Faron Young, Mother Maybelle, were all kind to Elvis. Elvis sang hillbilly music at the beginning of his career, that is why he was on that tour. Elvis was a polite, nice, Christian boy. He didn't walk around pouting all over the place, like in this movie. Thrusting his pelvis in girl's faces at the Hayride. That was so gross. Also the scene at the beginning with young Elvis, sweating and gyrating in the church, was also really gross. Tom Hanks was AWFUL. This will go down as the worst performance of his career. I kept watching thinking John Goodman would have been much better suited for this role. Perhaps under a different director, like the Coen brothers, this movie could have been great. Baz Luhrman was not the right choice for this movie at all. Tom's accent was ridiculous and his acting was an F. The guy playing Elvis did actually try, but what could he do with this material? I like Elvis, but my mom was a super fan. She would have hated this movie. Elvis hating Christmas? Made no sense, he recorded Blue Christmas! A classic song! He recorded a Christmas album! And from my understanding, wasn't Elvis drafted into the Army? He didn't go to clean up his act. He also didn't miss his mom's death either, he was there. This movie has so many facts wrong, that anyone who knows even a little about Elvis will be left scratching their head. The only good part was the ending, and seeing the clips of the real Elvis. The man was larger than life. And it was a tragedy he died so young.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
Don't bother with Weird
This movie started off promising. It had very strong Walk Hard vibes. The part with his dad and getting the accordion were funny. The illicit polka party was hilarious. In fact the first, I don't know, 30-45 minutes were good, the pool party scene was great. Then he takes LSD from Dr. Demento and goes insane. He thinks he wrote Eat it before MJ recorded Beat it. He starts drinking, he starts dating Madonna of all people. The entire plot line devolves into I'm not a real artist because I only do parodies. Is this some sort of self loathing on Weird Al's part? People became his fans because of his parodies, but he did write original songs too. They don't cover any of his other songs, the music videos, his movie or his TV show. He kills Pablo Escobar and Madonna takes Escobar's place. This made no sense. Madonna was HUGE in the 80's she would never have done this. As a Madonna and Michael Jackson fan, the movie felt like a dis-service to both of them. They also make fun of Prince, and I didn't get why? Gangsta's paradise came out in 1995, Amish Paradise in 1996, yet Al died in 1985? Was this just a weird continuity error or what? Hot mess of a film. Also Daniel Radcliffe was horribly miscast. Yes I get the movie itself was a parody, but unlike Walk Hard, it failed miserably.
The Munsters (2022)
It was alright, but I'll never watch it again
I grew up on re-runs of the Munsters. I enjoyed the silliness of the show, and now as an adult, really appreciate the great acting of Fred Gwynne, Yvonne DeCarlo and Al Lewis. They had fun with the show. Anyway, this movie was a real mixed bag. I did like that they gave Herman and Lilly a backstory. I didn't understand why young Herman was in a rock band? It really didn't fit his character, and only existed to have him wear his Hot Rod Herman costume. He abandons his band when he meets Lilly, and does everything he can to be with her. Which is in line with his character. Lilly and Herman were very in love in the original series. The only actor I enjoyed was the guy who played The Count. He was like the second coming of Al Lewis to me. Looks, mannerisms, yelling at Igor. Igor was apparently human once, so that was interesting. You also learn how they get Spot. For me the first half of the movie is just weird and drags a lot. Once Herman and Lilly are married and move to Los Angles, it gets better. Sadly the movie is almost done at that point. I enjoyed some of the cameos like the creature from the black lagoon. I was disappointed by the Wedding of Herman and Lilly, the hair should have been styled like the actual Bride of Frankenstain, since that's who Lilly is technically supposed to be. Anyway, I took this as what it was, but will never watch it again and will stick to the old re-runs and even the Munster go home! Movie.
The Bear (2022)
No point to this show
I sat through the first three episodes of this show, with a friend who loved it. After three episodes, I see no point to this series. The main character, Carny/Carmy not sure, is not likeable in anyway. He is just so mopey and bland and just comes across like wet toast. His Cousin, name escapes me, is horrendous. I am sure there is a story there with his kid, but I just do not care. The man is just so darn unlikeable and all he does is yell and swear. The cast of misfits that work in the kitchen, also boring. The plot is basically, world class chef returns home to Chicago, to run his brothers failing Chicago beef restaurant, after said brother kills himself. My question though is why? He clearly says he hasn't seen his family in a decade, and before this was working for very high end restaurants like The French Laundry. So why return to Chicago and do this? To prove himself? To who? The family he couldn't be bothered to keep in touch with? Also the Sous Chef, Sydney, is just God-awful. She is just so high maintenance, bossy, and constantly acting like she is the hottest thing going. She's just out of culinary school, but she acts like she knows it all. Typical, spoiled, twenty something character, who acts like the world owes her a job. Skip this series!
She's Having a Baby (1988)
The "She" in the title is basically a prop
I have watched many John Hughes movies. Usually I like them a lot. But this one fell totally flat. I felt in many of the scenes, Elizabeth McGovern could have been replaced with a mannequin. She is barely even a presence in the movie. Yes she is beautiful, but Kristy has no personality, besides nagging shrew wife keeping cool, Kevin Bacon's Jake, down. I was let down because I was expecting a cute romantic comedy. Instead we got one man's indecisiveness and daydream sequences, where he openly ogles women in their underwear. He daydreams about a model he met in a club, while his mannequin wife just stands there, staring into space. Why does Kristy have no personality? She finally becomes a real human being when she yells at Jake when his friend Quinn brings a slutty girlfiend to visit and also shines when she shuts down Quinns advances towards her. But too much of the movie is wasted on "Wives ruining a man's good time." Which I found really off putting. I am only giving this two stars because I actually really liked the soundtrack and the scene with the block party, which was actually fun. Otherwise skip this.
