Questioning Darwin (2014)
Conflicted view of this documentary
I am conflicted because on the one hand I agree with many of the other reviewers that the Christians who appear in this documentary represent the extreme which is 'Do not question the Bible as it is the word of God', versus the more measured Christians many of us know and encounter on a regular basis. However, it's clear that the only way that many Christianity can deny the validity of evolution is by adopting an all-or-nothing view of creation.
Christians fear Darwin because to accept any aspect of his theory, and I use this term loosely because I accept the scientific evidence of evolution, puts their belief system at risk. Although Darwin was clearly not concerned with such simplistic notions, he knew that the more simple-minded of our species would immediately feel threatened.
It is a sad reality that religious zealots are willing to impede intellectual progress for the sake of an outdated concept. Such is the world.
Nevertheless, I disagree that the documentary is bad as I appreciated that it touched on Darwin's life and speculates on what may have impacted his decisions and motivated his research.
Without argument, one of the greatest minds of all times. We are better as a species for his sacrifices.
Doomsday Preppers (2011)
A sad show about sad people
This show has many issues but here are the main ones.
1- It exploits ignorant and misinformed people. This is more voyeurism of a very small fringe of the population and depresses me if I watch it. At some point this show is equal or possibly worse than Hoarders. But in the case of Hoarders these people suffer from mental illness not ignorance.
2- Listening to these people is an exercise in restraint. They are largely uninformed and base their life-decisions on anecdotal information they glean from the internet and other like-minded people as equally ignorant. They lack the imagination to redirect their energy and efforts to endeavors that could benefit society. Their apocalyptic view of the world is unsupported by real-world events, think Katrina, Sandy, and Fukushima, and provides them with a platform that simply reinforces a mistaken belief that all Americans adhere to or support this behavior.
In the end, even if they are right, most people would prefer to die than live in the world these people are preparing for. This is probably this biggest omission they make when preparing for a doomsday scenario: Would you really want to live in such a world?
The Devil's Ride (2012)
Wanting to be part of any motorcycle club make you an idiot
This whole premise is idiotic and speaks to the simpleminded people who feel they need a club to show how bad-ass they are. Hell's Angels and the likes are morons and criminals and don't allow cameras in their clubs because they are criminals and violent sociopaths. The rest are wannabes and deserve to be made fools of.
A show like this panders to dimwits. Watching them try to make this the end all and be all is sad and cringe-worthy. Like another reviewer mentioned, it's a sad situation but that reviewer felt that other gangs were smarter, I disagree, the mentality shown here is just what I would expect of any similar gang.
Two and a Half Men (2003)
This was a bad show with Sheen and is just as unfunny with Kutcher
I had never seen this show until Kutcher joined, so I made a point of looking at over dozen episodes during the Sheen period, from various seasons, to see what all the fuss was about.
This is a show populated by idiots and annoying people. Cryer's character is an awful person with no redeeming qualities. Sheen's character while slightly more nuanced is still pathetically boring and unfunny. With arrival of Kutcher, the tone has certainly changed but it's still crap.
How a show like this remains on the air for 9 seasons and excellent material like Arrested Development is canceled is simply a testament to the limited IQ of most TV viewers.
People will probably say that since I haven't followed the show from the start that I can't truly appreciate it, that's just an excuse to dismiss this review.
I had never seen The Big Bang Theory until this season and was immediately impressed with the writing and characters. TAAHM has none of that. It's crap in season 1 and it's crap now.
Construction Intervention (2010)
Contrived
A manufactured feel good story with the required heart breaking story, impossible deadline that is miraculous achieved, a practical joke on the hard-nosed leader, and the life changing/world saving initiative saved/brought back from the brink of disaster.
There are comparable programs that are not as contrived and don't try and make the victims out to be something they are not. Why not focus on the construction issues and contracting problems so that viewers can learn from other peoples mistakes. Is this a construction show or an after school special?
It should be on some other network, not Discovery. What a waste of airtime.
