Frailty (2001)
A lot to talk about.
You've probably heard of Frailty at some point in your life. There are tons of things to talk about. Bill Paxton's direction is perfect the film feels like 1979 and it feels like it was made in the 90s which makes it even more special to me. If you've grown up with or around religion you might be able to relate to the idea of not believing or feeling lost like Fenton. The film also does a great job at showing how normal looking people can be monsters or "demons" as they say. And then we see people that looking and act like monsters because they are. Another thing I don't hear anyone mention is how the violence is handled. When ever a "demon" is "destroyed" there is no blood. However when ever a person is killed like the sheriff or Dad there is tons of blood. Almost like blood shows humanity. They also confirm that Adam does see "demons". He sees all the bad they've all done. But my favorite aspect of the film is that they never specify whether they are demons or humans but they do let you know that whatever they are they are terrible. I highly recommend Frailty to anyone who can take an hour and a half to watch a film that sheds light on the humanity of people.
Congo (1995)
A movie that delivers on nothing it promises.
Almost nothing works in this movie. The performances are wooden and stiff. The characters have no development. And they have extremely thin motivation. Basically you have a bunch of nothing characters wondering around in the woods for an hour until the final ten minutes where we finally see the damn gorillas we've been told about. The opening is not too bad. We see Bruce Campbell and another character get killed off screen by an off screen gorilla. Despite the fact that the gorilla is off screen it is an exciting opening. And it sets up the movie with extreme potential. Once we finally see the gorillas, the practical effects aren't too bad. But it's only for about ten minutes and then they get killed by an erupting volcano. And Tim Curry's accent. That's all I need to say.
Breaking Bad: Phoenix (2009)
A Tale of Birth and Death.
This is easily one of the most interesting episodes to talk about. The episode has a vibe about it like no other episode. It opens up with Walt delivering the meth and getting a call from Marie that the baby is born. And from then on the majority of the episode is pretty chill and happy except for Jesse and Jane doing heroine. There's a lot to talk about like the fact that there's to point of views in the episode those are Walt's and Donald's. The scene where Walt and Donald are talking in the bar is tragic because they're talking about wanting to help they're children change for the better. Donald says you can't give up on family. Which motivates Walt to go see Jesse and he pushes Jane onto her back. She starts vomiting and she begins to choke on it. And Walt lets her die because she knows everything about him and Jesse and could rat them out at any point. It is the beginning of the end for Walt. The episode begins with the birth of Walt's daughter and the death of Donald's daughter.
Breaking Bad: Better Call Saul (2009)
Amazing introduction for Saul!
At this point in Breaking Bad we've had some phenomenal episodes but this is by far the best so far. The episode does a great job at introducing Saul Goodman as a slimy but admittedly pretty genius lawyer. Without Saul Badger definitely would've gone to jail. But because Saul is clever they get Badger off. Saul mentions Lalo and Nacho which even though at the time they weren't planning on using those names to make actual characters. But now after Better Call Saul it's really cool revisiting it. The episode is extremely fun and energetic because most of the episodes previously in season 2 have had a lot of family drama which is not bad but it's nice to have a break from it. All in all this is still one of the best episodes that introduced a major character for Breaking Bad and obviously the main character of Better Call Saul.
Breaking Bad: Over (2009)
Bring the bottle back!
Over is an episode that is largely remembered for the ending, but I think it has more to offer. The beginning of the episode with Walt at his party and getting mad at Hank after he tried to take the bottle of alcohol from Walt. We see Walt get mad because he just learned in the last episode that his cancer is getting better and he's going to live much longer. And Hank talking the bottle is in Walt's eyes him taking the power away from Walt. We also get some character development for Jesse and Jane's relationship. Which I quite like is nothing amazing but it's interesting how he wants her father to know they're together and she doesn't. My favorite part about the episode is story involving Walt and this mold he found. I related it because I've found stuff that I get invested in fixing so I enjoyed that. And the ending we have to talk about. We've had a few moments of Walt showing that he can be a badass. But this first one to show how big his pride and his ego is.
Breaking Bad: Grilled (2009)
Tuco's end
Tuco honestly makes this episode for me. He's always been one of my favorite characters despite only being in four episodes of the show. The episode does a great job at showing us the type of people Walt and Jesse may encounter and what might happen to them. This is also the first time we see Hector another fantastic character he doesn't say anything but it's all in the eyes. The story around Skyler searching for Walt is the only aspect that I'm not that fond of. It's not bad or anything. It's just not as interesting as everything involving Tuco, Walt, and Jesse. There are a lot of hilarious moments despite the episode's rather serious tone. And I'm going to end it on the fact that this episode is the reason for Hank and Jesse's hate for each other.
Breaking Bad: Open House (2011)
Spoons?!
I know this is one of the least regarded episodes of the show. It's not one of my favorites either. But I don't think it deserves all the mediocre reviews. I find the story about Walt and Skyler buying the carwash very engaging actually. And I don't mind the side story with Marie about her going back into kleptomania. I know a lot of breaking bad fans love to hate Marie. But I don't understand how people can't feel bad for her. Despite how much I love Hank. He treats her horrible in this episode. And I think they did a good job showing how smart Skyler can be. But since they did that they also made Saul look dumb. Which I can't forgive.
Breaking Bad: Fly (2010)
Underrated!
This may not be the best episode of the show. Or the most entertaining. But it it certainly the most unique. They had to make a bottle episode this season because of budget constraints. So they went with this idea. But despite it being a bottle episode. And having barely anything to do with the overall story of Season 3. I think it's highly underrated. The idea of Walt and Jesse chasing a fly the whole episode is pretty ridiculous. But it's done so well. The episode doesn't take itself too seriously and has a lot of funny moments. But their are serious moments like when Walt almost tells Jesse about Jane or when Walt asks Jesse if he's been stealing meth. But the episode actually has a point to it. That is the fact that Walt can stand not being in control or being able to manipulate something. You can call it "filler" but I think it's much more than that.
Breaking Bad: Granite State (2013)
The most miserable episode of the show.
This takes place after the end of Ozymandias. We see Walt being taken to New Hampshire where he is going to live in hiding. Out of all the episodes of the show this is by far the most miserable episode. Even the episodes that have a miserable tone to them still at least have a moment of happiness or glee. But that is nowhere to be found in Granite State. Even in Ozymandias we see a moment with Walt and Holly that despite the fact that he kidnapped her. He's smiling and laughing it's dark, but there is a hint of happiness. In this episode everything is bad. We see the conditions Jesse is living in and what will happen if he tries to escape. We Todd and the others threaten Skyler and her kids. If they say anything about Lydia from the carwash or them they'll kill her and her kids. We see how lonely Walt is in the cabin. Walt gives Ed $10,000 just to stay 2 hours longer. But the end is one of the best endings to an episode of breaking bad. When Walt sees Gretchen and Elliott say that Walt only contributed to the name of Gray Matter he decides he still has things to do.
The Walking Dead: Dead Weight (2013)
The Governor is still the same man.
At the end of the last episode we saw the Governor reunite with Martinez. We see Martinez has become a leader of sorts for this group of people. And the Governor and the people he met in the last episode join the group. The last episode made it seem like the Governor was a better man. But we see that the Governor isn't a changed man. At every opportunity he gets to reclaim power he takes it like killing Martinez when he's drunk and near a pit full of walkers. Or when he kills Pete who's next in line to be in charge. The Governor will stab you in the back if it will benefit him in any way. If you like the Governor or are interested in what's happening with him I think you'll like this episode. And if you were looking forward to him being a better person sorry that's not the case.
The Walking Dead: Live Bait (2013)
The Governor is back!
So we just got the Governor back. How was it? I can understand why some people wouldn't like this episode whether it's because you hate the Governor or you just don't care to see where he's been since the end of season 3. But for me this was a huge breathe of fresh air. Personally I like the sickness/flu arc but it was slow and boring at times. And the Governor is one of my favorite characters so I really enjoy an episode entirely about him. I think it's nice to know where he's been and why we didn't see him in the first episode of season 4. Seeing him act like a normal person and not a psychopath was very interesting. Because these people don't know who he is or what he's done. So he can start over in a way.
The Walking Dead: Too Far Gone (2013)
Walking Dead's most important episode.
If you're watching this episode I expect that you've seen seasons 1-3 by this point. And hopefully you've watched the previous 2 episodes with the Governor. Too Far Gone is the most important episode of the show because not only does the Governor die but more importantly Rick realizes that some people are too far gone. And from this point on Rick takes very few chances with dangerous people. Spoilers ahead. If the Governor hadn't attacked the prison our characters might have been able to stay at the prison for the entire show to be honest. Not only is this the best episode of TWD is the best mid-season finale. It's the best final episode for a villain in TWD. And the episode perfectly represents the Walking Dead's tone because even though the Governor is killed but the group loses the prison. No one wins by the end.
Supernatural: You Can't Handle the Truth (2010)
Sam is lying.
For a filler episode it's actually not that bad. Yeah admittedly the episode really only exists to let us know something's wrong with Sam. But the way they lead to it is actually pretty clever. The idea that people can't lie is interesting. And later when Sam lies to Veritas she's shocked because no one can lie to her but Sam does. You're wondering how that's possible. Obviously later when it turns out Sam doesn't have a soul it makes sense. But it's very clever how lead to Sam revealing that he's different.
Supernatural: Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (2006)
Friend zoned.
This is actually a pretty decent episode. This is one of the more disliked episodes of Season 2 and I don't understand why. We all knew they would bring zombies into Supernatural. The idea of this girl who is brought back life and then seeks revenge on the people who hurt her has been used before but not zombie style. The only real issue I have with this episode is Dean. Throughout most of the episode he's just pissed off and wining. After a while it gets really annoying. But if you took that out this episode would actually pretty good.
Supernatural: Born Under a Bad Sign (2007)
Something's up with Sam.
Unlike Roadkill the twist in this episode doesn't destroy it. It actually makes it better because rewatching it and noticing how different Sam is acting and knowing that he's possessed by Meg makes it more fun.
Supernatural: Nightmare (2006)
Sam is not the only one.
Unfortunately this episode just doesn't work for me. The plot is about as interesting as shutting a door. The only thing to take away from this episode is that it introduces the fact that Sam isn't the only one who's mother burned on the ceiling and is now having weird mind powers. Everything else is quite bland because the whole builds up to that reveal and once it's revealed the episode just deflates because that's the only reason the episode exists.
Supernatural: Pilot (2005)
The Beginning.
It's kind of hard to judge this episode because it's the first episode of the show. Obviously there are better episodes later in show. If you love Supernatural you need to thank this episode for starting it all. This episode is pretty small scale in comparison to other episodes but it actually works in the episode's favor. You don't need the first episode to be huge in scale but you need it to good and effective and that's what we got. For a pretty small and simple plot it's iconic. The relationship between the brothers is the best part and even though this is the first episode Jared and Jensen's chemistry is so good it's no wonder they made a whole show with these guys. In the end it's a very simple episode but it sets every thing up so well that I can't help but love and appreciate it.
Supernatural: Season Seven, Time for a Wedding! (2011)
Why would you bring Becky back?
This is definitely the worst episode of Season 7 and there are a lot of bad episodes to from. Not only was the idea of this episode bad but it brings back of the most annoying and hated characters in Supernatural history BECKY! That really hurts the episode. But also the idea of Sam being under a love potion is just ridiculous. There is also this subplot about people who sold they're soul but there being killed early. Which is really there just to give this episode a reason to exist. Honestly there are only two episodes in the show that are worse than this episode that being Bloodlines and Mannequin 3: The Reckoning.
Supernatural: Like a Virgin (2011)
A start to a useless villain.
The episode is fine. The idea of dragons is pretty stupid which is the biggest detractor of this episode. But everything else isn't that bad. I like the idea that they have to take virgins. But unfortunately this leads to maybe the most underdeveloped villain in the entire show.
Supernatural: Hook Man (2005)
A very big guilty pleasure.
This is my biggest guilty pleasure episode of the whole show. I'm not going to defend the episode as good because it's certainly not. But there is some good stuff in the episode. For instance the episode is very well made and has really good production value. And the idea of bringing in The Hookman is a good idea. But unfortunately they don't do anything knew with the legend. They repeat all of the legends about The Hookman. The main reason why I gave the episode a passing grade is because of nostalgia and if you just want to have fun. And if that's all you want then you'll probably have a good time watching the episode like I do.
Supernatural: Playthings (2007)
Dull as a butter-knife.
The episode is one of the most forgettable and dull episodes of the show. The episode has a some what interesting idea of the brothers being at this hotel. But the only interesting thing to come of it is a pretty cool shining reference.
Supernatural: Roadkill (2007)
A good twist and that's about it.
I never understood why so many people like this episode. Yes I'll admit the first time you watch it the twist is shocking. But that's also the reason why this episode isn't rewatchable. The whole episode relies on the twist so once you know what it is the experience is greatly devalued. Not only that the plot isn't really even that interesting anyways. When you have an episode that exists solely to have a surprising twist then your episode shouldn't exist at all.
Supernatural: Bugs (2005)
Stupidity does not equal Quality.
In all honesty Bugs is not as bad as it's reputation but it's still pretty bad. I don't think that the idea of killer bugs is a bad idea. But unfortunately the episode does little to nothing with it. Most of the episode is pretty boring because the brothers just walk around and talk about how weird the killings are. Which is pretty normal for an episode but when that's all your episode is that can make for a pretty hard watch. The last 5 minutes are laughable because we're supposed to believe that they were fighting off bugs for like 8 hours. When I'm reality it's more like 5 minutes. The episode could be a guilty pleasure if it just had more going on. But the stupidity of it all and the lack of movement destroys this episode.
Supernatural: Bedtime Stories (2007)
Good concept. Very Poor execution.
Bedtime Stories is probably the worst episode thus far in the show. The real competition is maybe Bugs. The idea of fairytales that are killing people is actually not half bad. But the thing really hurts this episode is how dumb the end result is. Unfortunately the acting from some of the actors if quite terrible especially the guy who plays the big bad wolf. The only memorable things about this episode are that Ted from Breaking Bad is in it and the end of the episode when Sam kills the crossroads demon. That scene is iconic but that one thing alone can't save this episode from being a very lackluster episode.
Supernatural: Mannequin 3: The Reckoning (2011)
What an awful episode!
If you're watching Season 6 just skip this episode entirely. It's completely useless to plot of the Season 6. The episode is a cheap thrown together episode directed by the guy who did the Supergirl movie from the 80s. The plot, the acting, the logic, really just everything is thrown out the window to make a useless episode that only exists to fill a void. Not even the title makes any sense! I would go out on a limb and say that this might be the worst episode of the entire show.
