The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Very good with one weakness...
Great special-effects, great acting, most of the time suspense-packed, but unfortunately I could not find much of the often cited "darkness" in this movie...
The "bad guys", Orks and Uruk-hais, surely look great but anyway they don't have a threatening effect on me...
At the final battle at Helm's Deep they can be easily killed in dozens like in a computer game but on the other side one can see hardly no men or elbs dying or even have a brutal fight. Gimli's too many jokes and some unnecessary slapstick-like scenes as Legolas surfing on a shield take out the dramatic of the battle scenes, too. Unfortunately the question "More Saruman hasn't to offer?!?" that somebody expresses during the fight is justified.
At the end the battle is suddenly over and I didn't have the impression that there was an intensive fight before. Although it was brilliantly animated I was a little bit disappointed of the battle of Helm's Deep!
All in all the movie still is great! Let's say 9/10...
Best of the Best (1989)
Typical direct-to-video-movie of the 80's...
Horrible acting, a well-known plot, great one-liners like "If You don't get it now, You'll never get it" or "I'll kill You", "Rocky"-like-music - and good entertaining make this movie typical for direct-to-video-stuff of the 80's, which also is shown by the German title "Karate tiger 4"...
It's the story about five martial-arts-fighters of the USA, who prepare for a competition against a Korean team... Except of Tommy Lee, the Asian guy in the US-Team (who, of course, also has to revenge his brother's death in a former fight), it's quite funny to believe, that these American guys, a skinny buddhist with glasses, a long-haired Italian, a cowboy with bad behaviour and well-known Eric Roberts (Julia's brother..), really shall be the "best of the best" fighters in the world. B-Star Eric Roberts is sympathetic, charismatic and long-haired in this movie, but definitively not an martial-arts-fighter... and one asks oneself permanently what drove him to act in this - financial problems or the need for a "real male" role...? 5/10
Twice-Told Tales (1963)
Great old horror film!
I may not be very objective in reviewing this movie, because I've seen it for the first time when I was young and was very impressed then, an impression, which one doesn't forget of course... I still love it, each time when I see it again, because of the three intelligent stories (one about an elixir of life and a tragic love triangle, one about a poison which separates two lovers, and one about a haunted house), which of course in view of the movie's age don't contain splatter elements but unfold a subtle horror and especially because of the atmosphere with the wonderful kitschy set and colors, which gives the movie, beside of the dated special effects, the typical and irresistible charm of old trash...
