Inside Nature's Giants (2009)
My favorite documentary series of all time
I watched this show as a child and it was very formative for me. It's very well-made and fascinating.
Dr. Joy Reidenberg is my favorite member of the cast - she is a joy indeed, and her excitement is contagious. Her genuine love for and interest in biology shines through every second she's on screen, especially when it comes to her specialties in aquatic animals and vocal anatomy. She explains things clearly in a way that makes her deep understanding and expertise obvious. It would NOT be the same without her.
I really love seeing these huge creatures be cut up and explained. It's a lot more hands-on than other edutainment media and goes more in-depth in some interesting ways. The whale episodes are my personal favorites. I highly recommend this show to EVERYONE - even if you don't think you're interested in biology, this show might surprise you.
How to Build a Sex Room (2022)
Interesting concept, but lacking
Props to these couples for being so open and public about something so personal. Some of the couples are pretty cute! I think the idea of a dedicated sex room is out of touch, but that's par for the course with renovation TV like this. I wish there had been more focus on education and safe kink practices. I don't like the surprise aspect of the show given how tremendous some of the changes are.
I think the dynamic between Melanie and Mike is weird; if they've been working together for so long, shouldn't they be more used to each other? Melanie asking Mike to flog her harder when he doesn't seem to want to (in front of his son, in their client's front yard for some reason? Doesn't really work with the whole "my clients could be your next door neighbors and you would never even know" thing, but ok) isn't cute. Mike protesting the whole time when she asks him to test out the bed restraints to see if they work and fit right doesn't make Melanie seem more sexually open and quirky by comparison, it makes her seem like someone who should not be in charge of guiding others into the realm of kink. It also doesn't pass a basic realism check; he would be used to and comfortable with these parts of the job by now, or she would know not to ask him by now. Obviously fake, not cute, not quirky, not funny, just bad consent modeling.
I wish we'd seen better behavior from Melanie (not to place shame on her; I'm sure scripting and editing are playing a large role) and more involvement in designing the rooms from the clients. The current presentation doesn't hold up the claim that Melanie is a super knowledgeable sex guide who's qualified to lead people on a sexual journey. The lack of design involvement from the clients makes me unsure every time of whether they actually like the room or are feeling overwhelmed/pressured to for the camera. Ultimately it just doesn't hold up.
Dietland (2018)
Love the premise, bored by the execution
It's completely mislabeled as a comedy, and while the premise and ideas this show is reaching toward are extremely compelling to me, in the three episodes I watched I did not find them to cohere well enough to actually be interesting to watch. Maybe if it moved faster and had more interesting bits; a lot of it feels like filler. Verena's plan is so confusing and poorly explained. Some of the characters are so boring - they don't feel realistic as people, and they're not dimensional or interesting. It's good enough that I wish it was better, but unfortunately it's just not written tightly or cleverly enough to hold my attention.
Infinity Train (2019)
Great first 2 seasons, meh third season, not surprised it got cancelled after the fourth
Loved the first two seasons, and I think the third is worth watching if seeing Apex in season 2 piqued your interest. Didn't finish the fourth season.
Dead End: Paranormal Park (2022)
Cute Gravity Falls-like show
Similar to Gravity Falls - would definitely recommend to fans of that show. The setting and plot (twists!) are unique and fun to follow. The cast is fun and cute, and even as an adult watching, the show is entertaining and can be funny at times. It's a good all-ages show and I hope it gets a second season!
Russian Doll (2019)
trauma and family
My mind actually boggles to see the number of people saying season two wasn't as good as season one, and "what was even the point." Season one was 4/5 for me, season two is 5/5. Both seasons feature amazing acting, great writing, and a great soundtrack. Both seasons have to do with overcoming trauma. Season two is very sharply focused on intergenerational trauma. Nadia is going back in time to try and fix the wrongs her family has done to her, in the process realizing that she can't do any better or different. It's a very meaningful and talented exploration of questions around how our family affects us, what made them how they are, and how much free will do we even have when so much of ourselves is shaped by our upbringing and our experiences. At least, that's what it brought up for me. I think anyone waiting for the magical realism to get a clear, scientific answer in the canon is missing the point of both seasons. Can't wait for a potential third season!
