Doragon Bôru Zetto Ryû-Ken Bakuhatsu!! Gokû ga Yaraneba Dare ga Yaru (1995)
One of the Best!!
I liked this one very much, and I dare say it is the second best DBZ movie amongst the older ones, behind The History of Trunks only. There are so many good points in this movie, and I'll try to enumerate them,
First of all, Super Saiyan 3 and the epic Dragon Fist, a technique that was forgotten in the manga and anime series are seen together here in an awesome moment. Super Saiyan 3 is one of the worst transformations in the series. I mean, it has never beaten up anyone, and this movie provides this necessary moment!
The plot is very good, actually. It is a bit more deep than it is used to be in DBZ movies. Characters have a quite nice development, and the dramaticity is way more mature. The ending could be even more dramatic, only that Tapion had to step aside for incredible Goku's Dragon Fist be put into action. No complaints about that. Everyone really wanted to see Super Saiyan 3 one last time.
Tapion is cool and Hirudegarn is amazing. His evolution is very surprising and gives him an even better condition as villain. Also the humour is less present into this one, but this is no defect, by no means. As I stated before, this movie is a bit more serious.
Stunning fight scenes, many characters do show up and fight. Even Gotenks, and he just shows up very quickly, which is good, because he is very annoying. It was nice to see him, anyway. Some surprises like Vegeta saving people. Well, this is a must watch for DBZ series fans. I loved it!
American Psycho (2000)
Meat, Bone, Meat, Bone
There's so much about this movie that it deserves more than one viewing. I first watched it as a teen, and I wasn't able to catch it at all. I must admit, I didn't understand a thing. I'm sure I was just a kid back then and couldn't grasp at all the dark elements that are present in this. I was expecting more gruesomeness, and this is gruesome still, but in ways that are even more complex.
As the film goes, Pat Bateman gets more and more.deranged, and it is quite a show to watch the brilliant Bale's performance. He kills for his ego. People, when they best him, upset him, and there's a point when this becomes uncontrollable. He starts to kill insanely.
There are so many great references. His sense of humor is madness, and he's got a taste for himself and music that's so disturbing, because it is exactly how a true psycopath behaves. Also this makes the movie funny sometimes. He talking about himself to some sl*ts and they... really bothered. I laughed really hard at that part.
There's also some really disturbing situations in this, where you see how plastic people may become when they aren't even psycopaths at all. That's what they call Wall Street culture, and damn, that might be even as gruesome as the killing itself. It is a great movie, it is funny, upsetting, scary, intelligent, and thrilling. I could watch this many times yet.
Spawn (1997)
I Don't Think This is THAT Bad
I don't know if it's because I watched the director's cut version of this that made me enjoy it. I noticed that the minor changes of this version is just a bit more of violence, and that's understandable.
Spawn's look is amazing, not only as burnt Al Simmons but as well his armor, mask and cape. As the film goes on he learns to control his powers and seeks his revenge with Jason Wynrr. Clown is a recurrent enemy and some comic relief. I understand he can be annoying sometimes, but I actually laughed a lot in the graveyard scene, where some guys makes some kind of pact with the devil and when they see Spawn and Clown they just wet their pants off, and Clown says "How come God hogs up all the good followers and we get all the retards?".
The CG for Spawn armor is incredible, but it is just stupid for the hell scenes. This was made when CG was new and they started using it into these awful ways they did in the nineties. The same thing in Blade (1998), which is good, but that CG blood sucks. Anyway, the hell scenes are more likely some PS1 game cutscene and it looks terrible and is more satisfying to just ignore it.
I think this is quite enjoyable. It has some nice action scenes, violence and the plot isn't bad at all. Not to mention the gothic vibe of the movie, much like The Crow (1994), when almost the entire film sets up at night. If you're curious, like I was, try the director's cut. Don't expect anything phenomenal, but it isn't pure trash, I can say that.
Doragon bôru Z: Kyokugen batoru!! San dai sûpâ saiyajin (1992)
Not so Good
In my opinion this is one of the most forgettable DBZ movies. The villains aren't interesting and Android 13 is way too overpowered.
It is smart the idea of exploring the numbers before 17 but well, I didn't like this one. I felt it was repetitive and the way he was beaten in the end not satisfying (it was creative, for sure), because as I said, he was too overpowered. The heroes couldn't even make him falter.
This guy is just like Broly. A villain so powerful that must be beaten by Deus ex Machina. Maybe the best thing about this one is that the Z Warriors are able to beat some of the villains, and that's not up to Goku alone.
Dragon Ball Z: Ginga Giri-Giri!! Butchigiri no Sugoi Yatsu (1993)
A Must Watch of the DBZ Movies.
This one has many reasons for being among the best DBZ movies.
First of all, one of the best elements in these movies is the humor. It's soft, well-placed and most importantly, funny. This is not different, and I dare say it is one of the best in this factor. I had a lot of laughs.
Here we have an opportunity to see unusual fights never to be seen in the anime. Trunks vs. Tenshin, Piccolo vs. Krillin, which ends in a very funny manner. And other cool fights vs the galaxy bandits.
Another good point is that Goku is not the main hero here, and don't take me badly, it is kinda boring to see Goku always beating up the bad guys in the end. As he is dead here, the job is done by Gohan, and we're able not only to see him as a super saiyan 2 again, but also with an alternative outfit, in his father memory.
The only complaint I have is that I would like to see some of the bad guys beaten by more Z Warriors, and here all of them were taken out by the almighty half-breed.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Where Does She Meets These Guys?
Quite entertaining MCU movie. The default pattern, where our hero emerges and must face a villain that is almost a copy of himself.
First of all, as a brazilian, I was very surprised when I saw that Hulk had chosen Brazil as a hideout. I liked very much to see people speaking my language, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lesson he took, and Débora Nascimento taking place in some cool scenes.
Rocinha favela was a really good choice as a hideout, and I liked that. One small flaw, and it didn't bother me at all, but just saying, Rocinha was such a good refuge, that Hulk's chasers would never have been able to reach the top of it without a lot of trouble with drug dealers.
This movie has some funny moments, like when Betty's father says "Where does she meets these guys?", after trying to get some answers from the shrink she was dating. And I liked very much his response, which was. Up to par to what you would expect of a shrink. He didn't hate her old boyfriend, neither her, he saw him protecting her and thus, it was fine.
Another flaw to be noticed is when Hulk leaves Brazil and wakes up in Guatemala. Duuuuude, Brazil is immensely big, and Rio de Janeiro is really, REALLY far from Guatemala. I don't know how many kilometers can Hulk jump, but damn, that voyage took a LOT of jumps, you can be sure. Such voyage should be at least 5000kms long, if not more.
Anyway, good movie. Pretty decent action and overall plot. Hulk's design is very beautiful (better than Mark Ruffalo's), the CG is good enough, not perfect, but well made and the movie is overall satisfying.
Ice Age (2002)
Top Notch Animation
This is a franchise of absolute success. I guess this is a classic in every part in the world. At least, here in Brazil it is seen as such.
This is fun, it is smart without being boring, I mean, this was made for children, and that's why it is genious. It has many scientific information, but it is not scratched there, it is shown in a slow pace that it can be absorbed by children and they'll know something more not just about science but as well about life, because that's the most important thing these animations teaches us. Even adults have much to learn with this kind of film.
Great, funny, a must watch for kids, but if you're an upset adult and has sense of humour, well, just watch it!
Le pacte des loups (2001)
Quite bad
I watched this taking it seriously, and maybe that was my mistake. The movie has some qualities, like photography and the costumes which are gorgeous! It kinda reaches Barry Lyndon's visual appearance, and Barry Lyndon is maybe unique when it comes to such things.
That said, this movie is overall stupid when it comes to plot, characters, action and so on. It is not meant to be taken seriously, and maybe in such a way, you will be able to enjoy it. It is a kind of classicist blockbuster. It remembers me of The Three Musketeers (2011). Exact same vibe. Movies set in monarchy times, with a lot of action which doesn't make sense at all, gorgeous, really gorgeous girls (Monica Bellucci) and that's it. If you like that kind of movie, this is for you.
Maybe I'll give another chance to this flick. Sometimes bad movies can be good.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
The Best Game Adaptation to the Theaters
I went to the theater not knowing what to expect from this one, and I just loved it. The movie is very funny, it has great tension and adventure moments and well, it can be surprising sometimes.
As a maniac for videogames, this one delivered the best game adaptation ever, it is a good movie after all, not some boring or nonsense stuff like it happens almost everytime with video game adaptations. The fighting scenes are insanely good. They did a really great job here not just with CG, but also with the plot, which goes perfectly through the hero journey.
There's a great surprise in the credits scene which is an overall of the movie shown in pixels like the classic Sega videogame, and there's a post-credits scene which you must see. Don't miss it!
If you want to have fun, laugh and distract yourself a little (or take your children), this is the best option. Have fun!
Ringu (1998)
Witch Story
What I like about this one is its originality on telling a witch story. An old concept, which felt kinda saturated, is reborn and made very fit to the time when this was conceived. I mean, it's funny to imagine such type of horror in 2022. Cassette tapes and house telephones, things that have been surpassed already (in the modern world, of course).
This witch wouldn't be very effective nowadays, and actually, she would move to the internet and come out from a cursed website, and that sounds much more lame. Cassette tapes, static TV sounds and a telephone ringing with a cursed message are really scary things, so this worked greatly at its time.
Adding more about the witch concept. I like it, and I really enjoyed the mysterious story of Sadako and her family, Ryuji's conjectures about it, and the great final scene.
I should add, that this is more like a thriller than anything. There's the horror thing, but I found it to be more of a light one, so expect a good story, a good mystery and great tension moments, not much brutality.
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Best Dracula Ever
When I first watched this, I had just read the book and was expecting for a really faithful adaptation of it. So at that time, I was fairly disappointed. The movie looked great, but Coppola's vision of it, changing some of the core elements of the story, bothered me. I thought, as well, that the ending felt kinda hurried.
Now I rewatched it, with another vision, and damn. I was able to enjoy it a lot more, and be sure that this is the best Dracula movie ever made. It's gorgeously beautiful and also the story is different from the original, but it fits greatly if you pay good attention. Gary Oldman, as well, is just undisputable amazing.
There's a reference to the Nosferatu classic in this movie, which I found very funny and it's bloody, really bloody. I love that! So, ten out of ten. A masterpiece!
Carrie (1976)
A Masterpiece!
I've watched long ago the 2002 version of this, and I didn't like it. Then, not much time ago, when I started to get more into Stephen King stuff, I knew I had to check this one up and it gave me the chills. I mean, this is how a true horror story should be. Malevolent!
I didn't check up the book yet, but I will as soon as possible, and anyways, this seems like a good adaptation. The story is quite interesting and sad. But the best part is the ending where this delivers more and more madness.
There's THAT classic scene, and as well, some hellish conotation that I just love in Stephen King's works. It's surrounded in mystery and the end gives you a sensation that this is just part of a much more bigger horror that is just implicit. A true classic! Must watch!
Halloween (1978)
Classic Horror
I remember watching this as a teen a long time ago. I always liked horror movies, and wanted to check up the classics. I remeber I didn't like this one that much. It felt slow and also I wanted it to be more brutal. I kept asking myself the whole movie, how can a guy that was locked in a sanitarium his entire life learn how to drive a car.
Recently, due to the sequels being produced nowadays, I watched this again as an adult, and I was able to appreciate it much more. I paid more attention to details and also enjoyed how this looks like the precursor of the american horror genre. It imposes fear without the need to be gruesome. The atmosphere is good and catchy. Good to enjoy with a nice popcorn.
Ju-on (2000)
I Am Not Easy to Scare, and This One Gave Me the Creeps
Wow, just wow!
This movie is so scary and evil. It's gruesome as well.
The plot felt interesting, and I was like tied to the movie for much time, also there was a climax scene that just WOW!
This disturbed me for a few days, I must confess, and I am a hardcore horror movies enjoyer. I wasn't able to sleep at all when I watched this at night. I don't know what it is, if it's the low-budget vibe that makes it more realistic or the plot that is just insane, the violence, as well, that is just creative.
I've watched the following movies of the series, and none of them surpasses this. I don't know if the studios force the directors to slow down a bit in violence and evil, because this one is just madness, and I am glad I've watched it first.
I also got a version that compiles this one and the second one Ju-on 2 (2000). And just WOOOOW, I loved it. All I can say is this: If you really like horror movies and want to test your nerves and also see something really different, better and scary? Well, this is it! PURE GHASTLY EVIL.
Ju-on 2 (2003)
Very Good
I actually liked this one much more than its predecessor, Ju-on:The Grudge (2002). This is way more bloody, gruesome and smarter as well. I like violence in horror movies, and when there isn't even blood, like there wasn't much in The Grudge 1, well, it kinda feels hollow to me, the ghosts don't seem THAT dangerous. Also the deaths happen more often in this one.
The plot is much better for sure, there are some cool mysteries, the timeline is split and also some time tricks that are VERY SMART. I loved them. Not to mention the ending that was just pure EVIL. I like it!
If you want a good, not scary at all, at least for me (Ju-on: the Curse from 2000 is the scariest stuff I've ever watched), but good, and some bloody and violent deaths, evil ending and something a bit off traditional american horror, this is a great option.
