Batwoman (2019)
Kate is Batwoman
The thing I find funny about the show is the main character Kate, would be first person everyone would suspect of being the Batwoman. They build up this character which like others have pointed out, is a caricature of an 1980s lesbian Rambo, and then we're supposed to believe that no one is going to guess immediately that it's the one woman who's basically Batwoman in civilian clothing.
Other than that this show seems to have been an after thought with no real investment. It's like something from the 90s it's production value is so low.
The Orville (2017)
Predictable bubble gum TV
I watch this show because it's sc-fi and it's Seth MacFarlane. Two good things. But it's not really a good sci-fi, or on par with Seth's other comedies. I don't think it was ever supposed to be in the same genre as Seth's comedy shows but even the comedy that is in it is shallow and most the jokes have gotten old already.
It's trying to recreate the 90s sci-fi TV show vibe and as a once off that can work, but the problem is 90s sci-fi is dated, the science of it is already laughable by today's standards and I want my sci-fi to be more realistic, this is fantasy sci-fi based of 90's ignorance. Everything about the world is wrong scientifically and it's just kind of annoying. That's just my opinion, it's not good sci-fi to me.
They try to address modern issues with characters like their gay worf, but again it's very shallow, I was kind of expecting a warrior society with one gender and I was interested to see how it would play out. But he's partner has female behavior, they just fill standard gender roles that we have here on earth. Then of course it turns into something else which further ruins it and limits the character ark even further.
I found that rather than the show finding alien species and cultures and adapting to their ways, the aliens end up finally accepting that they need to be more like us and then they all live happily ever after. It's preachy in a dumb small minded way.
I'm going to continue watching it. I think the show wants to be more serious, I just don't think the show has enough depth, it's a funny gag that's being dragged out with no grounding in science.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Evil Star Trek is brilliant
When I was growing up ST TNG was my star trek, I loved it as a child and got really into the technology going as far as to buy a technical manual for the enterprise.
The problem with star trek in my opinion is it's stuck in a time warp, it's doggedly stuck in a 1960s interpretation of a future we've already superseded, bar transporters, warp drives and replicators most technology around today is better and more functional than what's in the ST universe. So I had real reservations about a new series because I knew ST had to stick to it's own cannon which meant I was going to get bored with it pretty quickly.
The whole science vessel with a military structure is also wearing extremely thin. I just can't buy it anymore.
But switching to the evil universe means they can really make all these outdated quirks work, military structure in a fascist regime makes perfect sense. Over the top characters make sense, having terrible use of technology makes sense.
I love it. For those saying it's the death nail of ST. ST sticking so rigidly to a cannon that's clearly outdated by todays standards is what's killing ST, it's stuck in a fantasy land and can't change, it's gone from sci-fi to sci-fantasy were it can wallow in cool shoots of star ships and fancy uniforms available in a store near you. I would have gone further and started from scratch.
FDR: American Badass! (2012)
Completely ridiculous but great fun
From the outset this film looks cheap and you might consider not bothering to watch it based on that but if you stick with it the great cast suck you into it's unbelievably ridiculous world. Barry Bostwick's performance Carry's the film. There's a lot of modern street talk that he manages to pull off, even though some of it is borderline to silly but at the same time he turns in some great speeches that would be worthy of a far more serious film.
There's not much point in explaining the film, it's far to daft to attempt an explanation but it works, that's mostly down to the cast, the production, direction is excellent too, given the low budget nature of the film they made the most of what they had.
Last of the Living (2009)
Very inconsistent
This film is all over the place, one minute you have classic shambling zombies then later in the film they can run. If you get bitten by the zombie you get turned into one (sometimes instantly when the mood hits the writers even though at another stage in the film they say it takes more than an hour to turn) but if the zombies blood gets sprayed into your mouth it's fine. At one stage one of the characters is able to knock out a zombie with a punch in other scenes 3 of them can't knock one zombie with bats (although I think they where just copying Shaun of the dead in that scene).
I suppose the films supposed to be a comedy but it fails at that too, overall nothing works here it's a bad comedy, it's a bad horror and it's about as suspenseful as watching a dog lick it's own balls.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Best thing on TV
This show is absolutely outstanding! It's quickly become one of my all time favorites, I only remember Bryan Cranston from Malcolm in the middle and am fairly shocked by how different he is. He goes from being a completely convincing suburbanite teacher to a completely believable villain without betraying the character. At times he looks completely menacing which is probably what makes the show work because his character really isn't that way.
It's actually a rush at times watching the show because he's so good at sucking you into the world. There's no point in reading reviews for this show, just start watching it, you won't be able to stop.
Fair City (1989)
So bad it's painful
I don't know how they manage to make it so bad. Every scene in the show goes exactly the same way. Actor walks in, regurgitates lines, reply from other actor, actor walks out. The actors aren't particularly bad, I've seen them in other stuff and they can act (sort of).
I can't say I could focus on the show long enough to pick up any plots, but what I've seen has been boring and painful. I do know one guy is dying of cancer at the moment, which you can only feel good about because all the actors play the worst of Dublin snobs that you just want to see die in the most horrible ways.
It's like going to visit your granny as a child and sitting in the middle of a group of old women talking about knitting, bunions or putting tea bags on their eyes. You just want to chew the table and pull your eyes out of your head.
On the plus side there may be adds on the other channels that provide better entertainment value than this half arsed tripe.
