A Christmas Carol (2019)
No Fezziwig or Nephew Fred's party. No "God Bless Us, Everyone." No thank you.
Yes, A Christmas Carol is a "ghost story of Christmas". Yes, it has its dark moments. But this seems excessive. Are we supposed to see a Scrooge who is completely irredeemable? Is that our lesson? Where is the joy of the story? It's all left on the cutting room floor to give us a dour, dark "modern" take on the Dickens classic. The producers of this miniseries should all be boiled in their own pudding and burried with a stake of holly through their hearts.
Meet the Spartans (2008)
Just awful....just plain awful.
I saw this the other day with a group of friends and I'm not sure I even saw all of it, but what I saw was enough for me to wish my $7.50 and the hour back. Seriously the version I saw was only and hour. I'm not sure if the theater missed a reel or what but I find it odd that even though I hated this film, I feel cheated by the fact that the supposed 84 min film came in at about 60 when I watched. I'll admit I chuckled every so ofter, but for the most part the fact that all the things being spoofed were telegraphed (Who are you monster! Paris Hilton! Like Toby Macquire in Spider-man 3).
Oh well. Stay away!
Can anyone verify if I got gypped?
Wholly Moses! (1980)
Dudley Moore does Life of Brian
Another British comedian takes on the Bible with similarly funny results. If you enjoy satirical pseudo-biblically based films, then you can't go wrong with Wholly Moses!
Dudley Moore plays Hershel, a Jewish boy who lives his whole life in the shadow of the biblical figure, and his own brother in law, Moses. Some very funny bits, and as i said before along the lines of Life of Brian and as others have said Mel Brooks' History of the World. Parodying several bible stories, this film is not as funny as LoB, but it's still a very enjoyable film. Stand out performances from Moore, Richard Pryor, Laraine Newman, Dom DeLuise, and including John Ritter as Satan.
