Dr. Saville's Horror Show (2022)
you WILL be disappointed, if you believe the rave reviews by accounts with only 1 review
You're not an idiot, so you aren't fooled by rave reviews by accounts that only have the one review, or accounts that haven't reviewed in years only to step forward to tell you how amazing this film is, or any of the common transparent liars tactics when it comes to reviews.
The stories are boring versions of stolen stories from YouTube shorts and other anthology movies. It has the feel of a movie written by 10 year olds for 10 year olds. Blunt "horror" when nuance is better or necessary.
The framing device for the anthology reeks of tryhardism, making Creepshow 3 and the abysmal series seem competent by comparison. The stories are lifted from HBO's Tales From the Crypt with stiffer acting and taking itself seriously, which is a mistake for any low talent film.
Don't Look Away (2023)
Brickleberry Does Youtube horror shorts
Stolen from the 2018 Youtube horror short DON'T LOOK AWAY (their caps, not mine) and wishing it was The Shining with blatant ripoffs of scenes and themes. The dialog is embarrassingly cobbled together and pretty racist in the depiction of the one black character, who also happens to be the only one who has a gun (illegally just for that extra racist stereotype flavor). The characters have no idea what they're up against, then without explanation they magically know exactly how the thing works because plot needs to happen. They come up with plans that almost seem logical, but they implement them without any logic. There are attempts at "jokes", telegraphed as blatantly as Paradise PD. The YouTube short is substantially better, despite not being good at all. Calling the characters 1 dimensional would be giving them too much credit. I was shocked to find out this was released in theaters, but then I remembered movie makers have no pride or shame these days.
Dead by Midnight (Y2Kill) (2022)
We laughed at our own jokes, so you will too
It's pretty lazy. The writing is mediocre. They cliche'd the tropes. The jokes are stale and stolen from YouTube. I was honestly surprised to find out it wasn't a Netflix movie. Exposition by way of poor dialogue. Inane "plot" lines. It's go Kane Hodder in it with a speaking role, make of that what you will.
Overall it feels like people pretending to ironically like horror schlock while actually trying (but failing) to make a good movie. They borrowed pretty much everything and did it so poorly. But the images look good, but technology shouldn't be mistaken for talent. ........................................................................................................................................................................................remove the 600 char or I'll sign you up for Bag'o D.
The Sandman (2022)
Save the show, ditch Paton Oswold
I honestly can't watch the show at all with him in it. He is immersion breaking. It was a good show and then his voice just completely ruined the experience.
Boys in the Trees (2016)
An enjoyable but predictable watch
It is definitely NOT The Lost Boys meets Donnie Darko, despite the creator's specious boast. It is basically Bridge to Terabithia (2007) adapted as a long form Goosebumps episode.
Not important to the review but just hitting the character quota... The main character looks like he is the son of Val Kilmer.
